The document summarizes the casting choices for roles in a slasher film trailer. Abdigani Hussein was chosen to play the villain due to his height and build. Emily Carroll will portray the final girl for her mousy look. Lucy Flood was selected as the first girl because she adhered to conventions of revealing clothing. Mahmoud Hussein will play the jock for his suggestive movements during auditions. Sebastian Bundhu and Kiran McEwan were chosen as the helpers for appearing wholesome and caring.
Lightning Talk #9: How UX and Data Storytelling Can Shape Policy by Mika Aldabaux singapore
How can we take UX and Data Storytelling out of the tech context and use them to change the way government behaves?
Showcasing the truth is the highest goal of data storytelling. Because the design of a chart can affect the interpretation of data in a major way, one must wield visual tools with care and deliberation. Using quantitative facts to evoke an emotional response is best achieved with the combination of UX and data storytelling.
Succession “Losers”: What Happens to Executives Passed Over for the CEO Job?
By David F. Larcker, Stephen A. Miles, and Brian Tayan
Stanford Closer Look Series
Overview:
Shareholders pay considerable attention to the choice of executive selected as the new CEO whenever a change in leadership takes place. However, without an inside look at the leading candidates to assume the CEO role, it is difficult for shareholders to tell whether the board has made the correct choice. In this Closer Look, we examine CEO succession events among the largest 100 companies over a ten-year period to determine what happens to the executives who were not selected (i.e., the “succession losers”) and how they perform relative to those who were selected (the “succession winners”).
We ask:
• Are the executives selected for the CEO role really better than those passed over?
• What are the implications for understanding the labor market for executive talent?
• Are differences in performance due to operating conditions or quality of available talent?
• Are boards better at identifying CEO talent than other research generally suggests?
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
3. Propp’s Character Types
• The Russian theorist, Vladimir Propp recognised that
within the narratives of fairytales there were recurring
character types. Although, not all of the character types
established are present within the slasher genre as they
are found predominantly in the action and adventure
genres, many of the character types are present and
codified in a way in which conveys the slasher genre with
its own tropes present.
• We have allocated the roles in which we think best suits
those who auditioned based on acting ability, structural
build and appearance in the portrayal of the character
types.
4. Final Cast
Main Cast:
Name: Role: Character Name:
Abdigani Hussein Villain Probation Worker
Emily Carroll Final Girl Jenny
Lucy Flood First Girl Jessica
Mahmoud Hussein Jock Daniel
Sebastian Bundhu Helper Ryan
Kiran McEwan Helper Emma
5. Villain
As a group we chose Abdi to play the role of the Villain within our slasher
trailer. We believe that Abdi best suits the role of villain due to his
structural build and height which makes him appear far older than the
other characters. This was very much a criteria needed, as the villain is the
head probation worker within the narrative and so must be depicted as
their superior in size and authority. Thus, he is masculine and therefore the
binary opposite of the final girl as his masculinity dominants the scenes
within the narrative creating a more daunting and petrifying Villain.
6. Final Girl
We have chosen Emily as the Final Girl as she portrays the
conventional final girls seen within the existing slasher genre. Her
mousy brown hair and wholesome look conveys her innocence and
purity in binary opposition to the Villain and Last Girl whom are
entirely opposite stylistically. Her clothing is very reserved as she
does not wear bright colours or tight fitted clothing as not to draw
attention to herself, instead she wears loose fitted purposeful
clothing, coloured in an earthly nature. Therefore, connoting her
empathy and warmth as a person but also portraying her quite and
virginal demeanour.
7. First Girl
Lucy was chosen to portray the character of the First Girl as she
wholeheartedly conforms to the conventions created by the slasher
genre. Her clothing choices are very provocative as she shows a lot of
flesh by wearing extremely short shorts and therefore adheres to
concept of the male gaze, as she is sexualised via the camera and so the
camera takes on a dominant role whereas the First Girl takes on the role
as being submissive and thus weak. In terms of acting, Lucy was one of
the best as she was able to give her lines without looking directly at the
camera and was able to act in compromising situations e.g. dragged
across the ground.
8. Jock
Based on a group decision we allocated the role of Jock to Mahmoud as he
portrays the conventional alpha male within slasher’s as he too like the First
Girl is sexually active however, this is shown through his body movements
such as initiating in suggestive movements with the First Girl. Within the
narrative he is shown to be very boisterous and egotistical by pushing aside
the Final Girl, with his only real interest lying in either talking about
himself or making out with the First Girl. As in the trailer her wears the
convectional all American bomber jacket which is associated with football
players within American football which is iconic of being the status symbol
for the role of the Jock within American Films and thus will be recognised
by the target demographic.
9. Helper (Male)
The role of the Male Helper was given to Sebastian as out of those
who were auditioned he best portrayed the character as he appears
more wholesome and caring in comparison. These qualities are
needed in order for the role of helper to be depicted within the
narrative clearly as he is the one to aide the Final Girl in her escape
from the Villain, and helps her to stand up against the Jock.
Therefore, he needs to be a somewhat authority figure in terms of that
he is looked up to by the other characters and that they feel that they
can come to him with any problems.
10. Helper (Female)
Kiran has been chosen for the role of Female Helper as like the Male
Helper she appears wholesome and friendly, a quality much needed for the
role of helper as she is an ally to the Final Girl and the only true
companion/friend she has during her time serving her community service.
We also wanted to make sure the cast was ethnically diverse as she is
Anglo-Indian, and therefore represents two ethnic groups. We wanted to
show a diverse range of ethnicities as within society there are many
different cultures therefore allowing the audience to relate to at least one of
the characters on a more deeper level.
