How does your
media product
represent
particular
social groups?
Alex Hearn
Q2
 Kitty
 Dress. I chose to dress Kitty in this
way as it represented the type of
character she was, of military
background, taking time to think
about what she wears for practicality
rather than always fashion. The tick
coat designed to keep her warm and
at the same time can be ditched for
quick movement and also can be
used to carry a number of items in
it’s pockets. The use of a plain
black top allows her to blend into
dark and the shadows. Teaming with
the rugged darker jeans and her
stable and watertight shoes allows
the character to take on pretty much
anything.
 Pose. Kitty’s character stands tall
and strong. She doesn’t like being
thrown around and tries to struggle
when she is restricted.
LUCY
 The Character of Lucy is almost an idle to other
women watch the film. She is a strong, female
protagonist and shows to a women audience that
women can be just as strong as her male
counterparts. Women in real life may find that she
is an inspirat ion to them inside. Maybe showing
that they don’t have to be second best.
 A number of other films, TV shows and Video games
use a strong main female character.
 Video Games:
 Tomb Raider (2013): After a reboot of the Tomb raider
game franchise, Square Enix (the developers) decided to
completely redesign the character of Lara. She is no
longer some sort of super human, but is represented as a
women who uses survival skills and who cares for the
other people who get shipwrecked. She shows love,
companion but also at the same time can take a number
of nocks and learns that she has to kill in order to
survive.
 TV
 The Walking Dead: One of the many female characters
in the Walking dead is Michonne. She is a strong female
protagonists again and is able to survive the main
outbreak and join many groups and still survives. She
lost her son and boyfriend earlier on, but proves that she
is still strong enough to carry on fighting the undead.
 Game of Thrones: The female characters in Game of
Thrones vary so much in role. They mix queens, fighters
and prostitutes into one TV series. This diversity shows
that as well as a women being able to depict a strong
female hereon, they can also be portrayed as sex
objects.
 Film
 The Hunger Games: This film portrays the female lead
role in a vary similar way to the way I aimed for Lucy to
be portrayed in my film. She is strong, agile and has a
number of skills that can be shown off and use
effectively in combat or just for survival. Again, she is a
strong female lead role and a perfect example of how I
wanted her to depict.
 Kick-Ass: Hit girl effectively pays no attention to the
gender stereotypes that are put in front of her. She is a
strong female character who has played with gun and
grenades all of her life. She knows how to handle
weapons and special equipment and as a result shows
another version of a strong female lead role off.
HOW DOES SHE REPRESENT A SOCIAL
GROUP?
 Adam
 Dress. I address Adam in a relaxed
manner, as his character was fairly
relaxed about the whole situation that
he was in. He knew from the start that
he was luring Lucy into a trap and that
he had the power over her. As a result,
he didn’t feel arming himself or using
protective armour was necessary. I
dressed him in a hooded top and a
simple t-shirt. This showed that the
character knew he would be exposed to
the elements. His jeans and trainers
are both study and fairly suable for the
environment.
 Pose. Adam’s character is quite full of
himself. He leaves the dirty work to be
done by is henchman and soldiers. He
is proud and tends to overshadow
people in situations. This can be seen
when he is talking to Lucy in the chair.
He is constantly standing over her and
as a result shows off his power.
CARLO
 The character of Carlo is designed to
be a male interpretation of their evil
side. Slightly mad, if fairly relaxed,
loads of money and at the same time
powerful. Men may try and relate to
this as he is playing almost a bit of a
fantasy for them.
 Again a number of films and games
use this sort of mad man bad guy.
 Video games
 Far Cry 3: Two main character in Far Cry 3
conform to this sort of character. Hoyt
Wolker is the main antagonist and is
basically a drugs and human trafficker. He
earns a lot of money and has the support of
a massive army, the control of an island
and has a care free attitude. Vaas
Montenegro is Hoyt’s right hand man and
basically does all of his dirty work for him.
My character of Carlo is a combination as
he does the dirty work himself, yet also has
the power and the money himself, rather
than replying on his boss.
 Films
 James Bond:
 Le Chiffre is a funder of international terrorism who
gambles against the stock market. He plays in high
stakes poker games in attempts to earn back lost
client money. He represents a similar type of
character has he is rich, and relaxed at almost every
situation. He also puts people into situation and traps
friends and loves such as Vesper, Bonds love interest.
HOW DOES HE REPRESENT A SOCIAL
GROUP?
 Ben
 Dress. For Ben I wanted again
somebody who knows what clothes
to wear in order to survive. He had
effectively been caught off guard in
this scene and as a result just looks
like he had been walking out in the
forest. The camo t-shirt are common
place for walking in the in the forest,
along with the thermal layer which is
then used to gag him.
 Pose. Ben’s character is being
thrown around and is not very
powerful at all in the scene. He
tends to be slumped on the chair
and just not very lively. He doesn’t
resit the interactions from the other
people in the scene, making him
scene even more vulnerable.
JAKE
 Jake is shown as vulnerable in
this section and even though he
is a strong character, needs help
from another character to get
out. This shows that male
characters can just be as
vulnerable as any other character
in the film. It proves that role
reversal can happen.
 Characters in film that this can
be similar too.
 Film
 The Hunger Games: Peeta is an example of
this. He survives on his own and with a
small group of a while, but then is injured
and relies Katniss for help. Without her he
would have been killed off.
 James Bond Casino Royal: However super
James Bond is, there are sometimes he has
to helped. The torture scene from Casino
Royale would have ended with him being
killed off by Le Chiffre unless Mr White has
entered.
HOW DOES HE REPRESENT A SOCIAL
GROUP?
 Lewis
 Dress. Lewis again was dressed in
sensible outdoor gear. The use of a
fleece and the darker trousers show
again he is sort of prepared for outdoor
walking.
 Pose. As Lewis was a supporting
actors in the role of a soldier, his pose
and stance was that of relaxed and
then as the fight started, more
involved.
 Dan
 Dress. Dan was dressed in a similar
way to Lewis. I wanted similar dress
across the two soldiers as this showed
that they both have similar ideas. Dan
however wore a Coat instead of a
fleece.
 Pose. Again, Dan was a supporting
role in this film and as a result posing
was a bit of a problem. However his
mood and role was similar to Lewis, so
I posed him in a similar way.
SMITH AND RATHED
 Both Rathed and Smith act like they don’t really want to be
there. They could represent a similar social group of people
who may not want to e in a job or in a place or the current like
they have.
HOW DO THEY REPRESENT A SOCIAL
GROUP?
 In my film, I aimed for the Mise-en-scene to show off the fact
that I have a female lead role. I aimed for her to be in every
shot and also be the focus of most of the shots. Doing this
shows that the women social group does have a main part in
the film and that she can be a strong as her male
counterparts.
MISE-EN-SCENE
 The film uses a number of conventions from the action genre
and therefore represents the target audience. A fight scene is
used and this shows that the a target audience like action.
 The use of the colour grading also makes the film fit the genre
and therefore the target audience. It does this by making the
film looks darker and all together more encompassing.
 The use of the tension and interrogation scene also is
something that my audience would enjoy. I chose to use this
rather than getting straight on with the action as I felt it would
give a little something more to the scene and allow the
character to be connected with.
