Casey Harty is a political science major who completed assignments and journals focused on emotional intelligence, time management, and self-talk. Her favorite assignments included a team poster project and a service learning project. Favorite journals explored emotional intelligence, inner voices, and time management. The most impactful week addressed inner critics and defenders. Key lessons learned were to stop being so hard on herself, manage emotions, and improve time management. Self-assessment scores increased from her first to second attempts in most areas, particularly accepting responsibility and developing emotional intelligence. Her goal is to apply these lessons to lead her best life.

2. Favorite Assignments
◦ My all time favorite assignment was on the first day of class when we were put into teams and
made a poster. I think it was a really good way to get to know each other. It was fun to see our
interests.
◦ My second favorite assignment was the service learning project. It really taught me that being
selfless is a good quality. It was also fun to be able to volunteer with mom. I got to understand
her every day life at work.
◦ My last favorite assignment was the letter to the next class. I think it is important to tell the next
class what to expect. I like being able to help ease people’s anxiety.

3. Favorite Journals
◦ My first favorite journal was the one about emotional intelligence. For one, it was great to be
able to write about my feelings. Writing about feelings really helped me learn about how to
handle my feelings.
◦ My second favorite journal was the one from chapter six where we had a conversation with out
inner voices. I liked it because it showed me how quickly I am to be hard on myself a lot of the
time. It forced me to learn how to talk to myself in a more positive way.
◦ My third favorite journal was the one from chapter four. I really liked doing the time
management chart. It showed me how much time I really am wasting by not doing anything
important. It showed me that I need to focus more on school.

4. Favorite week
◦ My favorite week was the week when we talked about our inner critics and defenders. When we
first started talking about this, I wasn’t sure that I would like talking about the way I talk to
myself. However, I found that by really breaking down the way I talk to myself, I started talking
to myself more positively. I now take the time to truly analyze how I talk to myself.

5. Lessons I’ll Carry With Me
◦ For sure the number one lessen I will take with me is that I need to stop being so hard on
myself. I really have learned that I talk to myself in a negative way, and that I need to stop being
so hard on myself.
◦ Another lessen I will take away with me is how to manage my emotions. I have learned that
when people are mad and yelling, they’re usually mad about something other than me.
◦ The last lessen I will take away with me is about time management. I have learned that I need to
try harder to manage my time so that I can be most productive.
