Earthquake: the word itself feels disastrous. Though the earthquake has no direct effect on human being, but still it causes a plenty of life and property loss. The reason is earthquake tends to fail the various structures such as buildings, houses, bridges, roads etc. and this failure causes all losses. The following pictures shows some of the failure of structures due to earthquake. But please hold for a minute, in case of the following failed structures, it was possible to prevent the failure…… Because these structures are not failed only due to earthquake but because of failure of soil strata bellow the structure due to the earthquake. And if the soil was improved before construction the failure could be avoided.
This phenomenon of failure of soil strata during earthquake is called as the “Soil Liquefaction”. Liquefaction is responsible for extreme property damage & loss of life due to several variations in failure potential. Still the liquefaction is not given that much importance. In India during Bhuj Earthquake lots of structures are collapsed due to liquefaction itself. And there are many liquefaction prone areas are present in zone IV in India. That’s why liquefaction is very much important.
In this paper, the study of liquefaction is done with respect to its introduction, properties of soil in which the liquefaction may occurs, how exactly the liquefaction takes place, detailed Geotechnical Study of liquefaction which includes how to decide the liquefaction prone area, evaluation of liquefaction potential and the various old and recent remedial measures to avoid the liquefaction, along with software and Artificial Neural Network. So that one can become safe against Liquefaction.

Hi, class, it wasn’t easy to come up with a problem, but after thinking for a long night, it was easy to chose one. In my human resource career, I will consider cultural diversity in a professional working environment. I have a weakness in adapting to changes in working environment and the people I find there. The article that I found, and my introduction worked well. However, I still need to add more content to my first paragraph to sound more convincing. Here is my draft:

How often does cultural diversity in organizations affect the way they operate? Globalization and increased customer goods and services demands, have encouraged many organization to venture into the international market to continue expanding their businesses. Organizations must expand their employee base by employing many skilled personnel from different cultural backgrounds. Negative outcomes of cultural integration in workplaces, affect their goods and service delivery. Johnson & James, a global health company cannot assume this fact, as its operation are also affected by cultural diversity. These challenges the companies’ operation in delivering its goods and services, creating a deficit in services and financial surges. The issue can be addressed by the company conducting motivational, leadership and behavioral workshops to enhance diversity training and development.
According to Alhejji et al. (2016), diversity training programs enhances development of employee knowledge, skills, and attitude which enhances culture in a workplace. Many organizations utilize cultural diversity in their workplace to encourage innovation and development of new-problem solving ideas. In an organization setup, employees need to come up with innovative ways of improving service delivery and enhancing customer-employee relationship. Employing personnel from different cultural background provides an organizational frontier to achieve it. However, poor management of cultural diverse teams, can result in a company losing it credibility to the customer purchasing power.
I know I can find a solution to this problem soon.

CASE: APPLE
After five years under Apple CEO Tim Cook’s leadership, Apple’s revenue has
tripled, it has doubled the number employees working for the company to over
115,000, and its cash reserves have grown to a record $246 billion. Cook says,
“Our reason for being is the same as it’s always been. To make the world’s best
products that really enrich people’s lives.” Apple’s functional structure has helped
that product development to be wildly successful through collaboration, beating
out a number of competitors like Sony whose multi-divisional structures keep them
from sharing information, expertise, and technology in the most effective way.
However, it causes problems for them as well. Apple desktop users are frustrated
with a lack of updates (over three years running) and iPhone/iPad users get
frustrated that Apple waits to provide major updates
to its software systems until it has a new product on the market. Apple
shareholders are upset that Apple isn’t making more money off of their services
(iTunes and other apps). These kinds of issues arise partly because nobody is “in
charge” of those products or services.
One of the reasons companies eschew functional (expertise) structures is that it
makes
it more difficult to hold managers accountable for things when they go wrong. In a
multi- divisional structure, if a product fails or a region or unit doesn’t make a
certain amount of profit—there is someone to point to. When an issue arises with
Windows or Office or Microsoft Cloud, Microsoft knows where to go and whom
to hold responsible because someone is in charge of those products. Apple’s
philosophy is different. Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “They’re not things where we
run separate [profits and losses] on, because we don’t do that—we don’t believe in
that. We manage the company at the top and just have one [profit and loss] and
don’t worry about the iCloud team making money and the Siri team making
money. We want to have a great customer experience, and we think measuring all
these things at that level would never achieve such a thing.”

Introductory Case Study for Group Discussion:
Mary and her husband John were feeling squeezed by their financial situation. Both are almost done with
their postdoc appointments, and want to start a family soon, but they are worried that they would not
have enough money to live comfortably with children in the LA area (where their extended families
reside). Recently, a sales rep visiting Mary’s lab told her about a newly available Field Applications and
Sales Scientist position at his company (a major microscope vendor). In their discussion, he happened to
mention that she could double her current salary in that role, so she was naturally intrigued. Mary applied
for the job, got an interview, and was offered the position. With strong encouragement from her
husband, she was about to accept the offer when she began to have second thoughts:
• “Sure the money is going to be nice but how will I balance future childcare issues with the extensive
travel required in that job?”
• “I initially chose scientific research to make an impact on my field, work on cutting edge questions,
and maybe even make a real difference in peoples’ lives. Will I be able to realize those goals in this
new position?”
• “If I were to work in this position temporarily to get some experience and earn some money, will I be
able to transition into my ideal job later? How would this temporary job look on my resume?”
• “This Field Apps/Sales position has a base‐salary‐plus‐commission salary structure. The people I met
during my interviews all seemed money motivated. I mean, they all seemed really happy with their
jobs and everything, but they sure talked a lot about the extra hours they spent working to meet their
sales goals. Money is important, but I don’t think I want to work SO many hours, away from my family,
in order to make a higher level of sales and get that extra commission.”
Mary realized that she might not find this position so satisfying after all.

Since 1982, almost 800,000 PhDs were awarded in science and engineering (S&E) fields, whereas only about 100,000 academic faculty positions were created in those fields within the same time frame. The number of S&E PhDs awarded annually has also increased over this time frame, from ~19,000 in 1982 to ~36,000 in 2011. The number of faculty positions created each year, however, has not changed, with roughly 3,000 new positions created annually.

a study of over 30 universities and over 280 employers, mostly from the sciences, esp those in the agricultural sciences
Employers (those who will be hiring you) consider professional soft skills to be the most important.
Alumni (those with whom you’ll be working and who sit on search committees) also think the same
Faculty probably think that discipline knowledge is the most important, because they do research and teach their disciplines.
But students probably follow faculty because they are strongly influenced by faculty from sitting in their classes and doing research under them.
In the same study, employers ranked new graduates low in their soft skills, and high in their discipline knowledge
But students ranked themselves high in soft skills and lower in discipline knowledge
So you may need to address this difference of perceptions in your interactions with potential employers

Their observations were confirmed with a similar experiment in their psychology class (Dunning, Kruger, et al; Curr Directions Psychol Sci, 2003, 12, 83–87) where students guessed their scores right after taking a course exam.

They had greater satisfaction, were more productive (# papers), had reported fewer conflicts with the PI, and rated their PI as higher

but there was a recent study that showed that grad students and postdocs used their values to guide their career planning than they originally thought

this isn’t meant to be a simple 4-step process; you often go back and forth between the steps, and even cycle through it multiple times; as you get rejection notices, you have to re-assess your skills, your connections, etc
Unplanned events more often determine life and career choices than all the careful planning we do. A chance meeting, a broken appointment, a hobby — can lead to unexpected career choices.
Krumboltz and Levin actively encourage readers to anticipate frequent changes, to take advantage of chance events, and to make the most of what life offers.
