One of the most exciting things about living and working in the ‘emerging markets’ is the rapid pace of change and the wealth of new opportunities. This is perhaps best exemplified by Myanmar, which really is the newest emerging market.
Since sanctions lifted last year, we have been working with clients to help them to understand the values, attitudes and aspirations of people in Myanmar. We were delighted to receive our formal licence to operate in March and have opened a full service office in Yangon. You can learn more about the opportunity in Myanmar and across the new Mekong sub-region - which includes Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam – in this edition.
We kicked off the year with our Chinese New Year study – building an understanding of how people in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and Malaysia celebrate new year. The holidays are far behind us, but some of the insights into attitudes are of interest beyond this.
The impact of mobile in sub-Saharan Africa has been massive, however people are not actively engaging with brands via mobile, particularly in South Africa. We examine some of the barriers and potential solutions that companies can consider to increase their effectiveness in this area.
Finally, we share a perspective on reverse innovation – and the lessons that ‘mature markets’ can learn from emerging economies.

South African agriculture faces a significant challenge in terms of visibility in both export and local markets. As markets become more competitive and clients become more demanding, market participants must work harder to secure their competitive (market) relationships. One way in which to meet this challenge, is through effective branding.
Sectoral branding, as is being undertaken in the case of agriculture, is a collaborative process between government and the private sector, aimed at managing perceptions of local consumers, policy makers and export markets to maximise opportunities available to industry participants. Sectoral branding may be regarded as a subdivision of nation branding. Nation branding aims to measure, build and manage the reputation of countries (closely related to place branding), whereas sectoral branding refers to the same process, however, as applied in the context of a given economic sector.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

29. Environmental Responsibility A growing concern in the world today is the impact of PVC cards on the environment, and a new consciousness has arisen. A desire to be environmentally conscientious is filtering into many consumer based decisions - including our use of plastic cards. In the past few years PLA otherwise known as “corn card” has been introduced into the South African market. In fact several large retailers have bought into the “corn card” craze. A few very important details have been overlooked, and this warrants a closer look.
30. Environmental Responsibility The Corn Card claims to be "biodegradable“. Advocates claim that it can be turned into a fertilizer. Well that is a half truth! What isn't widely known is that it requires very special treatment - not the type that comes from your garden's compost pile, or your local landfill. It requires a “controlled composting environment” to decompose. It must reach 60ºC and remain at this temperature for 10 consecutive days for the plastic to start breaking down and then it take less than 90 days to biodegrade. The reality is that there is no such solution available in South Africa.
31. Environmental Responsibility Secondly, we need to consider the use of a foodto supply a consumable product. Bio plastics compete for land with biofuels and food crops. The industry is forecast to need several million acres of farmlandwithin four years. We have millions of starving kids and we are using farmland to manufacture biofuels??? Thirdly, concern has been raised about the likelihood of emissions of greenhouse gas, methane. Biodegradable plastics are ending up on landfill sites, where they degrade without oxygen, releasing methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
32. Environmental Responsibility Just because it's biodegradable does not mean it's good. If it goes to landfill and breaks down to methane, that’s really bad!! In theory it sounds wonderful to offer an biodegradable solution, but in practice there are lots of real barriersand much misinformation. Since we work with several plastic (PVC) recyclers we are very aware of what can be done and what is being done here in South Africa. YOU CAN RECYCLE YOUR PLASTIC CARD! Our goal is to promote a “REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE” mentality. This is the environmentally responsible attitude to have.
33. In Conclusion So whether you need 1 card or thousands QuickCards® will deliver. Our Just-In-Time programme will improve your effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and profitability. Let us tailor make a solution for you! CardsPlus Putting the “Smart” into Card Solutions
