Cardiac CT is a painless test that uses x-rays to take detailed pictures of the heart. During the scan, an x-ray machine circles the body and takes images of the heart that are combined into a 3D model. Contrast dye may be injected to highlight blood vessels. While radiation is involved, the amount is small but carries a slight cancer risk, especially for younger patients. Cardiac CT is commonly used to detect calcium buildup, heart problems, aorta issues, blood clots, and other cardiac conditions.
