La sensibilità di Dickens è fortemente influenzata da un'infanzia segnata dalla
povertà e dal senso d'abbandono. Le sfortunate vicissitudini familiari non
consentono al piccolo Charles di completare adeguatamente i propri studi.
Tuttavia il ragazzo, facendo forza sulla propria caparbietà riesce a risollevarsi, fino
ad arrivare a trovare lavoro presso uno studio legale.
Dopo una serie di occupazioni minori, Dickens si afferma come scrittore grazie ad
un brillante romanzo pubblicato con cadenza mensile per il giornale Morning
Chronicle dal nome de “I quaderni postumi del circolo Pickwick”. È il 1836 e
Dickens ha 24 anni.
Nel periodo subito successivo a questo grande risultato, Dickens accresce
ulteriormente la propria fama grazie alla stesura di altri romanzi a puntate (tra cui
"Oliver Twist") e con la realizzazione di rappresentazioni teatrali .
3. STILE
STILE E CONTENUTI
Le opere di Charles Dickens sono caratterizzate da un tipo di scrittura semplice,
accessibile a tutti. Ogni suo romanzo rappresenta un quadro brillante delle
incoerenze, dell'ipocrisia e dei difetti della società inglese di quell'epoca.
I personaggi, descritti fino al più piccolo dettaglio fisico e difetto dell'anima,
sfiorano spesso la caricatura e creano figure vivide nell'immaginario del lettore.
La narrazione è prevalentemente in terza persona e accosta elementi tragici a
situazioni comiche.
I romanzi di Dickens sono fortemente influenzati dalle esperienze avute
durante gli anni difficili della propria infanzia e sono quasi sempre sviluppati
intorno alle conseguenze che la rivoluzione industriale aveva avuto sulle classi più
povere.
Altri punti comuni di molti romanzi di Dickens sono il lieto fine e la redenzione
dei personaggi descritti.
4. STORIA
Una grande storia sulla possibilità di cambiare il proprio destino. Una
riflessione sull’equilibrio difficile tra il presente, il passato e il futuro. Una
denuncia dello sfruttamento minorile e dell’analfabetismo. Ma soprattutto
una favola, una delle più commoventi che siano mai state scritte.
Protagonista è il vecchio e tirchio finanziere Ebenezer Scrooge –
personaggio che servirà da modello per il Paperon de’Paperoni – che nella
notte di Natale viene visitato da tre spettri. Lo indurranno a un
cambiamento radicale, a una conversione che farà di lui uno dei più grandi
personaggi letterari di tutti i tempi. Questo piccolo, amatissimo libro è un
opera immortale, capace di mantenere inalterata nel tempo la fragranza
della propria magia e del proprio spirito. Lo spirito del Natale,
dell’infanzia, di ciò che è buono e rassicurante, ma anche prezioso
abbastanza da volerlo proteggere a ogni costo.
