While a wind tunnel equivalent building dimension study (EBD) can be conducted to approximately correct the overprediction bias, past field and wind tunnel studies indicate that there are notable flaws in the PRIME building downwash theory. A detailed review of the theory supported by CFD and wind tunnel simulations of flow over simple rectangular buildings revealed the following serious theoretical flaws: enhanced turbulence in the building wake starting at the wrong longitudinal location; constant enhanced turbulence extending up to the wake height; constant initial enhanced turbulence in the building wake (does not vary with roughness or stability); discontinuities in the streamline calculations; and no method to account for streamlined or porous structures.
This paper documents some of the theoretical flaws that have been found in PRIME and provides supporting CFD and wind tunnel observations that confirm these findings. A suggested path forward to correct these problems is also outlined in accordance to Appendix W’s mandate that a model should be based on sound science and that its components are validated accordingly. In other words, corrections to the downwash theory in the model would ensure that the right answer is obtained for the right reason.

In this study, a hypothetical simulation model is analyzed under varying uncertainty conditions; the key features of overlapping and functional interaction affect the performance measures of development time and effort. Findings indicate that, first and foremost, whether or not overlapping occurs, increasing functional interaction eventually leads to a sound system. A selective overview of group & individual process behaviors of a combined suction & discharge cycles of a hypothetical oil refinery plant is suggested. The pipe material is Carbon fiber reinforced plastic which is chosen because of its excellent length to weight ratio & it serves as an integral part the system which involves tank piping. This model uses psychologically legitimate & theoretically grounded models for time & decision rules. The results of preliminary simulation experiments suggest that the model is sensitive to structural & pay- off density & precisely replicates ideal free distributions. Pipe network models allow the modeling of storage tanks in which the working fluid (here, Naphtha) surface is inconsistent with inflow & outflow. Stress analysis of CFRP material shows that the maximum stresses are within allowable material strength. From the trials, it can be accomplished that, with proper design parameters, CFRP can take the design load similar to that of steel & other alloys

This paper documents some of the theoretical flaws that have been found in PRIME and provides supporting CFD and wind tunnel observations that confirm these findings. A suggested path forward to correct these problems is also outlined in accordance to Appendix W’s mandate that a model should be based on sound science and that its components are validated accordingly. In other words, corrections to the downwash theory in the model would ensure that the right answer is obtained for the right reason.

Piping Stress Analysis of a Hypothetical Oil Refinery Plant Having Separate S...IJSRD
In this study, a hypothetical simulation model is analyzed under varying uncertainty conditions; the key features of overlapping and functional interaction affect the performance measures of development time and effort. Findings indicate that, first and foremost, whether or not overlapping occurs, increasing functional interaction eventually leads to a sound system. A selective overview of group & individual process behaviors of a combined suction & discharge cycles of a hypothetical oil refinery plant is suggested. The pipe material is Carbon fiber reinforced plastic which is chosen because of its excellent length to weight ratio & it serves as an integral part the system which involves tank piping. This model uses psychologically legitimate & theoretically grounded models for time & decision rules. The results of preliminary simulation experiments suggest that the model is sensitive to structural & pay- off density & precisely replicates ideal free distributions. Pipe network models allow the modeling of storage tanks in which the working fluid (here, Naphtha) surface is inconsistent with inflow & outflow. Stress analysis of CFRP material shows that the maximum stresses are within allowable material strength. From the trials, it can be accomplished that, with proper design parameters, CFRP can take the design load similar to that of steel & other alloys
Studies on Strength Evaluation of Fiber Reinforced Plastic CompositesIJERA Editor
Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites are extensively used for primary structural components such as wing, empennage and fuselage; and sub-structures such as wing ribs and intermediate spars in new generation aircraft as they give rise to high stiffness and strength to weight ratio. The failure load predictions of such composites are extremely important in order to ascertain the flight safety during its service periods. The stress analysis is a part of failure prediction process, since the failure criterion, in order to predict failure load, requires information about stresses and strains in a structure. In the present investigation, the stress analyses of CFRP composite laminates with and without cut-outs have been carried out by using both analytical and finite element approaches. In analytical approach, a mat lab code has been developed for a flat panel using Classical Laminated Plate Theory (CLPT) and different composite failure theories. MSC.NASTRAN finite element analysis code is used for carrying out finite element analysis. Convergence study has been carried out for the flat composite panel in order to ascertain the best mesh size. Comparison of stress and strain values obtained from both analytical and finite element methods shows that they are in good agreement for flat panel. This further validates the best mesh sizes obtained from the convergence study. This similar mesh sizes are further considered for flat panel with circular and elliptical cut-outs with some mesh refinements around the cut-out regions. Failure load of the flat composite laminate (without cut-out) is determined using four different failure criteria such as maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill and Tsai-Wu criteria. The predicted values are compared with experimental results. It is found that the most appropriate theory is Tsai-Wu failure criterion, since the predicted value based on this theory is very closure to experimental failure loads. This theory is used further for predicting the failure loads of composite laminates with cut-outs. The average value of stresses in each lamina has been used for determining the failure indices of the lamina for such cases. The results are compared with experimental failure loads available in the literature. The comparison shows that they are in very good agreement. Tsai-Wu failure criterion best predicts the failure load of a composite laminate with and without cut-outs.
This document discusses three case studies of failed reinforced concrete (RC) structures where linear elastic finite element analysis (FEA) provided insights into the failures. For a parking structure, FEA showed that shrinkage cracking would have been reduced with expansion joints every 30 meters instead of 95 meters. An industrial structure analysis revealed increased displacements and forces due to non-uniform soil conditions below the foundation. FEA of a collapsed pedestrian bridge confirmed that instability occurred when over two-thirds of the deck was placed due to global lateral torsional buckling. The case studies demonstrate how linear elastic FEA can identify failure modes not captured in simplified analysis and contribute valuable information to design and construction.

This document summarizes research using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to evaluate the protective properties of paint coatings on two bridges. EIS measurements were taken in the laboratory and in situ on the bridges. The results showed:
1) EIS provided information about coating properties like resistance, capacitance, and barrier effectiveness.
2) Coatings on external bridge surfaces exhibited high impedance and barrier properties. Coatings on internal surfaces showed signs of water penetration over time.
3) In situ bridge coating measurements correlated well with laboratory coating measurements, indicating EIS can effectively evaluate coatings on structures.

This document summarizes the key activities and findings from the author's Master's research project on modeling the deformation of glass reinforced plastic pipes during pipejacking installations. The author conducted a literature review, developed finite element models in ANSYS to simulate pipe deformation under jacking forces, validated the models using field data, and performed a sensitivity analysis. The numerical models matched field data most accurately when including a fixed support at the back of the pipe. The research helped improve understanding of structural performance and identify that higher jacking forces could be used without exceeding deformation limits. The author communicated results through meetings, presentations, and co-authoring a journal paper.

Conclusions Feasibility of GFRP Connections as Substitute to Metal Connections The failure load capacity of the GFRP connection performed similar to and in most cases better than the metal fasteners test results (under tri-directional simultaneous loads obtained from aerodynamic tests at the WoW) In some cases the ultimate failure resultant load for the GFRP connection was observed to be double of that for the metal fastener The GFRP connection test results seem to demonstrate that it can be applicable to new construction as well as retrofitting of old residential buildings that require strengthening against extreme wind loads with minimally intrusive techniques. Conclusions Failure Modes of GFRP Connections Vs Metal Connections The results show that the failure modes of connection joints are highly dependent on the type of the connection (GFRP versus metal) It was noted that as GFRP is non-intrusive it doesn’t weaken the wood members and crushing of wood is avoided (Ahmed et al., 2009). Conclusions Differences in Test Results -- Uni-Axial Vs Tri-Axial Testing The failure loads for both connectors (GFRP and metal) decreased during the tri-axial test When the coefficients FX/FZ and FY/FZ for the tri-axial testing were low the uplift capacity matched the uni-axial testing uplift capacity closely However when the coefficients were high, reduced uplift capacity was observed compared to the uni-axial testing uplift capacity This indicated that the lateral load components, if applied simultaneously with the uplift load component as experienced during real storms, the uplift load capacity of the connection is reduced – so that the uni-axial uplift test results are overestimated FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY - CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Future Work Recommendations The GFRP connection has yet to be tested aerodynamically under Category 4 and 5 hurricane conditions; this can be simulated in the 12-fan WoW system which is presently under development A series of timber structures, within tropical cyclone prone coastal areas, could be retrofitted with the new GFRP roof-to-wall connections. Building structure integrity is compromised when the inter-component connections, such as roof-to-wall connections, wall-to-wall connections, wall-to-floor connections, or anchorage-to-foundations fail. Continuous load path and structural integrity are crucial for windstorm resiliency of residential buildings. Tropical cyclone damage has shown that wood structures tend to suffer little damage when the roof system remains intact under extreme wind loading, while major damage occurs when the roof system is partially or completely damaged (Reed et al. 1997). Post tropical cyclone inspections have noted the entire roofs detaching from buildings in some cases (Figure 2.5). This indicates a serious deficiency in the roof-to-wall connection systems, most notable in older construction. Thus the roof-to-wall connections play an important role to prevent roof failures and lessen the damages during high winds.
As wind impacts a building, it creates vortices that can overwhelm the structure on different locations (see Figure 2.1). As wind travels around sharp edges, such as wall corners, roof overhangs and roof ridgelines, a separation bubble is formed. The wind separation bubble is bounded by a free shear layer region of high velocity gradients and high turbulence (Holmes 2001). Conical vortices are formed (see Figure 2.2); as these are shed down wind, high negative pressure peaks are produced which generate suction or uplift loads on roofs up-lift loads on a roof are transferred through the roof elements (e.g., tiles, shingles) to the plywood sheathing to the roof trusses; which could lead to roof detachment if the inter-component connections are improperly designed or installed. Figure 2.3 illustrates the distribution of forces along a timber building during a high wind event. In a properly designed building the roof loads are transferred through a continuous vertical load path to the foundation.
The Florida Building Code (FBC, 2007) has special provisions for buildings in the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) which consists of Miami-Dade and Broward counties in the state of Florida. Due to the strict design and construction practices used in the HVHZ, all metal connectors must be approved and rated by the code compliance authorities for use in buildings. The Notice of Approval (NOA) lets structural designers know the capacity of a specific product to be used in their design (Figure 2.6). FBC-07: 2321.7.2 requires all wood to wood straps to resist a minimum uplift force of 700 pounds with 4-16d nails in each member (FBC, 2007). The nails used may change if the NOA allows it.
Compared to other configurations, Configuration A yielded more favorable results. The failure loads obtained with CFRP were 20% higher (Canbek, 2009). Nevertheless, the price of a CFRP tie connection is approximately 5 times higher than that of a GFRP tie connection. Therefore, Configuration A with GFRP was selected as the best alternative for further development (Canbek, 2009
