“Prospects of Developing Cane Based
Cottage Industries in Sylhet”
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
 The purpose of the present study is to observe the pattern of
production of cane based cottage industries in Sylhet city,
identify the prospects of developing and problems, and
recommend solutions.
 Sylhet has a name for cane furniture. The natural and main
reason for this is the better growth of cane in the region
 The assignment mainly focuses on issues such as procurement
and management of Cane in the study area and its role as raw
material in cottage industry as well as income generation for
local communities
 The findings reveal that scarcity and inadequate supply of raw
material is the key problem, which is further aggravated by
poor quality in terms of maturity, dimension and finishing.
 The lack of promotional activities
 Technological draw backs and absence of research activities
 Key recommendations for improvement include provision of
sustained supply of raw materials by the government
organizations concerned, micro credit support from reputed
service providers, regular arrangement of training, marketing
and promotional activities by NGOs.
 Bangladesh as a raw material for making furniture, handy-
craft and other household articles
 Government also should patronize this industry by giving
logistic supports
 Entrepreneurs should create demand to all classes of people
through proper promotional programs, newest designing,
adding new features, extending the usages of cane furniture,
improving quality considering customer demand.
Origin of Cane
Cane as a descriptive term probably came from "skein" meaning
the yarn or material used to weave. Weaving cane as a method of
chair seating was first introduced into England during the second
half of the 17th century. In addition to its value as a decorative
accessory; it also continued to fulfill some of the function of the
sword as a weapon. The standard cane was rattan with a rounded
metal grip.
Who Invented the White Cane?
James Biggs of Bristol claimed to
have invented the white cane in
1921. After an accident claimed
his sight, the artist had to readjust
to his environment. Feeling
threatened by increased motor
vehicle traffic around his home,
Biggs decided to paint his
walking stick white to make
himself more visible to motorists.

The temporary laborers are employed on the basis of product
demand during particular days and seasons; accordingly the
rate of employment varies significantly depending on the
seasonal market demand.
The average wage per day is Tk 120.
Production Process and Nature of Cane Furniture
Cane is one of the important natural resources of Bangladesh forests
and homesteads. The importance and usage of it ranks next to timber
and bamboo. Its natural qualities allow it to be tanned, shaped, and
bent to make long-lasting and gorgeous looking furniture
Types and sources of raw material and their use
There are 600 varieties cane consisting of 13 species in the
world. Out of the 13 species only two viz. Calamus (Jali bet)
and Daemonorops (golla bet) grow in Bangladesh. Generally,
canes grow in the north- eastern hilly forests of Chittagong,
Cox's bazar, Chittagong hill tracts & Sylhet. Swamp forest of
Sylhet region is also the home ground for cane. Red lands of
Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Companigonj, Jakigonj and Jaflong
areas are rich in cane. Among various species of cane, Golla
and Calamus (Jali bet) are mostly used.
Why People want to purchase or buy Cane
Furniture
A concept has been developed in the society that cane
furniture is environment friendly, strong and long-lasting and
gorgeous looking furniture. Maintenance is very simple too. If
proper care is taken, cane furniture can last for many years, or
even decades. So, demand is increasing day by day. Most
furniture is extraordinarily heavy once you get to the larger
pieces, and requires several people to move it. Easy to Clean
and Maintain& Lightweight.
Production, Selling and Economic Profitability
A production is bundle of physical service and symbolic
attributes design to produce consumer want satisfaction. The
price of the cane products varies from enterprise to enterprise
and depends on number of labor involved, labor wage, and cost
of raw materials, cost of transportation, visual attraction and
quality of products.
Pricing pattern: The price of rattan as raw material varies
greatly depending on such considerations as species, origin, and
maturity of cane, length, and diameter. The price also fluctuates
seasonally, and according to market demand
Demand and supply dynamics
 During the rainy season it becomes difficult to harvest local
rattans
 The cost of transportation
 Tourists come from all around
Prospects of developing Cane Based cottage
industries in Sylhet
 If there is better transport and communication all over
Bangladesh especially in the sylhet areas the cottage industry
can contribute a lot to the integrated rural development.
 It also provides the women workers with opportunities to
participate in economic activities.
 It reduces poverty to some extent and as a result enhances the
way of economic solvency to the same extent.
 A concept has been developed in the society that cane furniture
is environment friendly, strong and long-lasting and gorgeous
looking furniture. Maintenance is very simple too. If proper
care is taken, cane furniture can last for many years, or even
decades. So, demand is increasing day by day
 In Sylhet, cane grows in bushes and jungles in small amount
and it is not cultivated commercially. Recently, the forest
department has started commercial plantations cane in many
forest areas. It will ensure the supply of raw materials in this
industry.
 Providing marketing facilities
 Setting up of technical service centers.
 Establishing handicraft development centers and carpet
centers.
 Providing per-investment counseling and guidance to
newcomers.
 Providing local and foreign loans to small industry owners on
easy installments.
PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH CANE
BASED COTTAGE INDUSTRY
• As modern machinery is not used in the cane industry, laborers
cannot produce such quickly as they can produce a single
product at a time. So it is a time consuming production process
and thus requires more labor wage. As a result the price of
cane products become higher and the demand of the Consumer
decline.
• For natural calamity the products of the nursery is destroyed.
• The most problem is the collection of raw materials mainly the
raw cane due to the much dependent on the cane of the outside
country.
• Weakness remains due to the lack of financial and institutional
support, instability of market demand, a decline in the
availability of quality raw materials, lack of skill and
RECOMMENDATIONS
 In Sylhet city there is no association of cane furniture
entrepreneurs.
 For better production cane furniture need skilled labor. Due to
high labor cost price is increased. Though, it is the part of
small and cottage industry, village women can be involved in
production
 Transport and communications should be developed
Modernization is needed to produce better qualitative products
so that the demand for the products may increase.
 Easy loan may be supplied to the entrepreneur
 Awareness should be created among the people in favor of
cane-based cottage industry and their products.
Conclusion
Cane furniture is an environment-friendly, strong and naturally
beautiful product of cottage industry. The possibilities of cane
furniture are endless. In spite of some advantages and
disadvantages of this industry has a number of desirable
attributes of appropriateness in the context of prevailing
socioeconomic conditions of the country. If the concerned
authorities take necessary steps to solve the problems relating to
the production of cane furniture and ensure the best use of
present opportunity then this industry will be the weapon for
earning foreign currency, creating employment opportunity and
developing socioeconomic condition of Bangladeshi people
specially in the study area. The contribution of this sector is
satisfactory as there is huge opportunity of employment
generation, it helps the people to be self employed, and it fulfils
not only our local demand but also the demand outside the
country.
