4. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The purpose of the present study is to observe the pattern of
production of cane based cottage industries in Sylhet city,
identify the prospects of developing and problems, and
recommend solutions.
Sylhet has a name for cane furniture. The natural and main
reason for this is the better growth of cane in the region

The findings reveal that scarcity and inadequate supply of raw
material is the key problem, which is further aggravated by
poor quality in terms of maturity, dimension and finishing.

organizations concerned, micro credit support from reputed
service providers, regular arrangement of training, marketing
and promotional activities by NGOs.

6. Origin of Cane
Cane as a descriptive term probably came from "skein" meaning
the yarn or material used to weave. Weaving cane as a method of
chair seating was first introduced into England during the second
half of the 17th century. In addition to its value as a decorative
accessory; it also continued to fulfill some of the function of the
sword as a weapon. The standard cane was rattan with a rounded
metal grip.

11. Worker involvement in the cane industry
Each enterprise employs two categories of laborers, temporary
and permanent.
The temporary laborers are employed on the basis of product
demand during particular days and seasons; accordingly the
rate of employment varies significantly depending on the
seasonal market demand.
The average wage per day is Tk 120.

Cane is one of the important natural resources of Bangladesh forests
and homesteads. The importance and usage of it ranks next to timber
and bamboo. Its natural qualities allow it to be tanned, shaped, and
bent to make long-lasting and gorgeous looking furniture

There are 600 varieties cane consisting of 13 species in the
world. Out of the 13 species only two viz. Calamus (Jali bet)
and Daemonorops (golla bet) grow in Bangladesh. Generally,
canes grow in the north- eastern hilly forests of Chittagong,
Cox's bazar, Chittagong hill tracts & Sylhet. Swamp forest of
Sylhet region is also the home ground for cane. Red lands of
Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Companigonj, Jakigonj and Jaflong
areas are rich in cane. Among various species of cane, Golla
and Calamus (Jali bet) are mostly used.

even decades. So, demand is increasing day by day. Most
furniture is extraordinarily heavy once you get to the larger

industries in Sylhet
If there is better transport and communication all over
Bangladesh especially in the sylhet areas the cottage industry
can contribute a lot to the integrated rural development.
It also provides the women workers with opportunities to
participate in economic activities.
It reduces poverty to some extent and as a result enhances the
way of economic solvency to the same extent.

17. PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH CANE
BASED COTTAGE INDUSTRY
• As modern machinery is not used in the cane industry, laborers
cannot produce such quickly as they can produce a single
product at a time. So it is a time consuming production process
and thus requires more labor wage. As a result the price of
cane products become higher and the demand of the Consumer
decline.
• For natural calamity the products of the nursery is destroyed.
• The most problem is the collection of raw materials mainly the
raw cane due to the much dependent on the cane of the outside
country.
• Weakness remains due to the lack of financial and institutional
support, instability of market demand, a decline in the
availability of quality raw materials, lack of skill and

In Sylhet city there is no association of cane furniture
entrepreneurs.
For better production cane furniture need skilled labor. Due to
high labor cost price is increased. Though, it is the part of
small and cottage industry, village women can be involved in
production
Transport and communications should be developed
Modernization is needed to produce better qualitative products
so that the demand for the products may increase.
Easy loan may be supplied to the entrepreneur
Awareness should be created among the people in favor of
cane-based cottage industry and their products.
19. Conclusion
Cane furniture is an environment-friendly, strong and naturally
beautiful product of cottage industry. The possibilities of cane
furniture are endless. In spite of some advantages and
disadvantages of this industry has a number of desirable
attributes of appropriateness in the context of prevailing
socioeconomic conditions of the country. If the concerned
authorities take necessary steps to solve the problems relating to
the production of cane furniture and ensure the best use of
present opportunity then this industry will be the weapon for
earning foreign currency, creating employment opportunity and
developing socioeconomic condition of Bangladeshi people
specially in the study area. The contribution of this sector is
satisfactory as there is huge opportunity of employment
generation, it helps the people to be self employed, and it fulfils
not only our local demand but also the demand outside the
country.
