Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Pakistan, claiming over 91,000 lives in 2013. A study found that new lung cancer cases doubled between 1990 and 2013, increasing from 7,700 to 15,500 among men. Meanwhile, breast cancer cases more than tripled in women during this period, from 16,900 to 54,400, and breast cancer deaths more than doubled among women, rising to 16,200 in 2013. The study highlights that cancer poses a major health threat in Pakistan and worldwide.

Patients under 60 with a BMI over 35 were 2.2 times as likely to be hospitalized and 3.6 times as likely to need critical care, indicating that obesity is an under-recognized risk factor for worse COVID-19 outcomes in younger patients.

Cervical cancer can be treated e ectively if diagnosed early. Less than half the number of participants presented with good practice.The correlation between participants’ knowledge, attitude and practice showed that there was a significant association which therefore provides sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis. The result obtained in this study indicates how useful it will be to establish health education programs to increase women’s awareness and knowledge about cervical cancer. Periodontitis is an important oral health issue globally and is prevalent in many developing countries, including those in the Arab World. However, there is a lack of recent and representative data on the prevalence of periodontitis among adult populations in the Arab countries. The few existing studies report a wide range of periodontitis prevalence, from 0% to 54.6%, depending on the measurement methods and case definitions used. Standardizing data collection and reporting methods would help develop more accurate understandings of periodontitis burden and inform public health programs for the region.

Lung cancer: “Epidemiology and risk factors”
Bronchopulmonary cancers are common cancers with a poor prognosis. It is the leading cause of death by cancer in Algeria and in the world. Behind this unfavorable prognosis hides numerous disparities according to age, sex, and exposure to risk factors, ranking 4th among incident cancers and developing countries including Algeria, all sexes combined. It ranks 2nd cancers in men and 3rd among women. Whatever the age observed, the incidence of this cancer is higher in men than in women, however the gap is narrowing to the detriment of the latter. The results of scientific research agree to relate trends in incidence and mortality rates to tobacco consumption, including passive smoking. Furthermore, other risk factors are mentioned such as exposure to asbestos in the workplace or to radon for the general population, or even genetic predisposition. However, the weight of these etiological and/or predisposing factors is in no way comparable to that of tobacco in the genesis of lung cancer and the resulting mortality. We provide a literature review in our article on the descriptive and analytical epidemiology of lung cancer.

Knowledge Regarding Uterine Cancer among Reproductive Age Women
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Uterine cancer is the most common cancer occurring in reproductive system of women. Uterine cancer begins when healthy cells in the uterus change and grow out of control, forming a mass of cells called a tumour. The aim of the study is to identify the knowledge regarding uterine cancer among reproductive age women. The objective of the study is to assess the knowledge regarding uterine cancer among reproductive age women and to find the association between socio demographic variables and knowledge regarding uterine cancer. In this study Quantitative research design was used to assess the knowledge among reproductive age women in selected villages of Distt. Roopnagar. 100 Reproductive age women were taken as a sample and Structured interview questionnaire was used for data collection. The results of the study states that 78 of women had average knowledge, 20 of women had good knowledge and remaining 2 had poor knowledge regarding uterine cancer and the Mean±SD of knowledge score was 12.66±2.23. There is significant association between knowledge and selected socio demographic variables as p 0.05. Study concluded that majority of women had average knowledge so there is need to enhance the knowledge regarding uterine cancer by educating the women. Over the past 20 years, improvements in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment in Australia have saved over 61,000 lives according to new Cancer Council research. Key findings include that annual lung cancer deaths have fallen by 2,154, bowel cancer deaths have fallen by 1,797, and breast cancer deaths have fallen by 773. However, cancers of the brain, pancreas, and esophagus have seen relatively small improvements, with 148, 69, and 64 fewer deaths respectively. Continued investment in research is needed to achieve further reductions in cancer deaths. Cancer Council NSW has funded over $120 million in research over the past 20 years, achieving advances such as new treatments for brain and pancreatic cancers and improved cancer survival rates.

Knowledge Regarding Uterine Cancer among Reproductive Age Women
Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Uterine cancer is the most common cancer occurring in reproductive system of women. Uterine cancer begins when healthy cells in the uterus change and grow out of control, forming a mass of cells called a tumour. The aim of the study is to identify the knowledge regarding uterine cancer among reproductive age women. The objective of the study is to assess the knowledge regarding uterine cancer among reproductive age women and to find the association between socio demographic variables and knowledge regarding uterine cancer. In this study Quantitative research design was used to assess the knowledge among reproductive age women in selected villages of Distt. Roopnagar. 100 Reproductive age women were taken as a sample and Structured interview questionnaire was used for data collection. The results of the study states that 78 of women had average knowledge, 20 of women had good knowledge and remaining 2 had poor knowledge regarding uterine cancer and the Mean±SD of knowledge score was 12.66±2.23. There is significant association between knowledge and selected socio demographic variables as p 0.05. Study concluded that majority of women had average knowledge so there is need to enhance the knowledge regarding uterine cancer by educating the women. Over the past 20 years, improvements in cancer prevention, screening, and treatment in Australia have saved over 61,000 lives according to new Cancer Council research. Key findings include that annual lung cancer deaths have fallen by 2,154, bowel cancer deaths have fallen by 1,797, and breast cancer deaths have fallen by 773. However, cancers of the brain, pancreas, and esophagus have seen relatively small improvements, with 148, 69, and 64 fewer deaths respectively. Continued investment in research is needed to achieve further reductions in cancer deaths. Cancer Council NSW has funded over $120 million in research over the past 20 years, achieving advances such as new treatments for brain and pancreatic cancers and improved cancer survival rates.

GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
Among patients with gastritis and/or ulcers, one of the dilemmas is associated with the foods to consume in order to minimize the sensation of pain and discomfort. PGx Analysis in VarSeq: A User’s Perspective
Since our release of the PGx capabilities in VarSeq, we’ve had a few months to gather some insights from various use cases. Breast cancer: Post menopausal endocrine therapy
Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.

- 2. In Pakistan various kinds of cancer have claimed over 91,000 lives in 2013 and an increasing trend was witnessed in new cases of fatality from lung cancer among men and breast cancer among women across the country between 1990 and 2013.

- 4. Study shows that number of new lung cancer cases has doubled in 23 year span of 1990 to 2013 increasing from 7,700 to 15,500. Among the leading cancers, the number of new cases of esophageal cancer in men was one of the lowest at 5,600 in 2013. Among the top 10 causes of cancer death in Pakistan, mouth cancer showed the lowest number of male deaths at 3,400 in 2013. Meanwhile prostate cancer cases have increased more than threefold during this period due in part to population growth and aging.
- 5. During this same period breast cancer cases among women more than tripled, from 16,900 to 54,400. Deaths from breast cancer were the highest for women, more than doubling to 16,200 in 2013, up from 7,100 in 1990. Within the top 10 causes of cancer incidence for women, leukemia showed the lowest number of new cases at 4,400 in 2013, up from 1,700 in 1990.
- 6. “Cancer remains a major threat to people’s health in Pakistan and around the world,” said oncologist Dr Christina Fitzmaurice, a Visiting Fellow at IHME and lead author of the study in a statement. Meanwhile talking to The Express Tribune, Dr Minhaj us Siraj, deputy director health at Capital Administrati and Development Division (CADD) said sadly in Pakistan the burden of noncommunicable diseases is increasing as compared to communicable diseases.
