A Terminus guide to success: forming a startup's core values.Sangram Vajre
For early-stage technology companies, it's essential to have a set of core values supporting your mission and vision. As a co-founder and CMO of Terminus, an Atlanta startup, being an entrepreneur has taught me how important it is to have our team aligned on the same set of principles. This will help continue to grow our company and ensure we're hiring the right "Terminators" to give "keys to the Ferrari".

2. PLAN your life's purpose which stems from your values
3. ACT on your life's purpose with our accountability blueprint and catapult your vision to reality. Our blueprint helps you break down a big purpose or vision into feasible goals and actionable plans.
4. EXCEL in life by tackling fear barriers, conventional beliefs and your deeper instincts which are holding you back from excellence. Learn to release yourself from the barriers and experience new levels of confidence, courage and freedom.

This presentation is a summary of section 2 (of 6) of the book "The 360º Leader" by best-selling author John C Maxwell. Challenges and solutions include:
* Tension (the pressure of being caught in the middle),
* Frustration (following an ineffective leader),
* Multi-Hat (one person – demands and expectations from all quarters),
* Ego (being hidden in the middle),
* Fulfillment (stuck in the middle, when would rather be in front),
* Vision (how to champion it when you did not create it),
* Influence (influencing others whom you do not manage).
Leadership is an important skill, but even more important is the ability to lead well. A strong leader inspires, encourages, and empowers those around them. Here we share with you several of the skills associated with successful leaders and what it means to embody those abilities as a truly great leader.

Why choose the topic of Lousy Leaders? Most of us say that we want to follow the Great Leaders, that we struggle to find Great Leaders with character, who care about people and their organizations. However, we say that those who are most prominent are the leaders who only support themselves and want to satiate hidden desires of power, acquisition, recognition, and accolades for themselves. One of the problems with Lousy Leaders is how they acquire their positions! Maybe accepting Lousy Leaders is part of a new standard in our new society. Society appears to support or create a level of leadership acceptance. Chosen leaders seem to replicate and be predicated on our society. Based on this idea, we are a society in turmoil and one of divisiveness. Do you think Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt or Churchill would thrive in this society? Do we, in actuality, support Great Leadership whose proponents exhibit visionary competence, integrity, morality, inclusive growth and development of followers, fairness, and humanistic care of others? Or, do we support the acceptance of political pandering and the desire to have some kind of tribal loyalty, even if it is to a Lousy Leader? In this age of emotional isolation brought about by over-reliance on devices, belonging to something, anything, gives people a group identity, the “us versus them” ideology.
Everyone has a leader within. It does not depend on the position you hold, rather it is how you can influence others. This program aims at awakening the leader within you. Reflect on your strengths and then focus on how you could use these strengths to emerge as a leader in whatever situation or position you may be in.
In commemoration of a year in print, we present the Startup of You in visual summary. The last year has continued to demonstrate how work and careers need a new entrepreneurial mindset for everyone, not just entrepreneurs.

Isn’t it curious? We look at other people, envy them for looking so terribly perfect and wish we could trade places with them, while they consider us and think of the same thing. We're jealous of other people who themselves are jealous of us. We suffer from low self-regard, lack of assurance and lose hope in self-improvement and ever winning anyone over.

Too often in the business world, we neglect consideration of psychology, emotion, and what is going on inour heads. We do whatever we can to maintain the pretense that we are emotionless bots, and“professionals” who aren’t rattled. The problem is, we are not emotionless. We are easily rattled. We wastea lot of time waging internal battles over who did what or who said what, who is to blame, which problemsmight occur, why things went wrong or may go wrong, or imagined slights and drama between us andothers

Ux design summit guarding against an us vs them mentalityJohn Murray
“They have no idea how to work with a real design team.” We’ve all heard or said something like that about people on our product teams, especially developers. While that’s a natural response to a breakdown in communication or a road bump during implementation, over time it can create an “Us vs. Them” mentality that does more harm than good. So how do we avoid scratching the itch. How do we keep avoiding giving in to the cynicism? As a design leader, how do you balance your team’s frustrations and continue to motivate them to deliver quality user experiences?

Being authentic as in knowing yourself is almost
impossible.
Let alone being an authentic leader, where leading is all about influencing others. "Combining both,
authenticity and leadership, in one concept becomes an endeavor only heroes from mythological realm can ever
aspire to successfully overcome."
It seems those who want to be authentic are setting themselves up for failure if at the same time they
want to do a good job as a leader. Leadership is about social connections and influence. We can't be good
at that if we're not willing to adapt to some norms and conventions in our environment.
5. intoactioncoaching.de
Authentic vs. sincere
How would those young leaders feel if they'd strive for being sincere rather than authentic? Is this even
what they meant all along? Being sincere means presenting yourself accurately and honestly to your team
and colleagues.
This could take a lot of stress out and reduce the somewhat schizophrenic feeling.
7. intoactioncoaching.de
Some more realistic standards you could hold
yourself accountable to (1)
Focus on the job at hand and the people around you.
If we're less concerned about ourselves and our appearance to the outside, we'd have plenty of
headspace to complete our tasks and be helpful to our teams.
8. intoactioncoaching.de
Some more realistic standards you could hold
yourself accountable to (2)
Be diplomatic and consider the needs and wants of those you lead.
Think about it. Which leader do you prefer? The one who always has to express himself (or herself) or the
one who cares about you?
9. intoactioncoaching.de
Some more realistic standards you could hold
yourself accountable to (3)
Be a bit more thick skinned.
Not as in "not giving a ...", but in the sense of a healthy self-defensive mechanism. Yes, you'll make
mistakes. Yes, you should learn from them. And yes, you should care not to hurt others. But often people
on the cheap seats have quite an expensive opinion of you. And even the feedback from your most senior
leader is flawed. There are moments where you can respectfully ignore what others think of you.
10. intoactioncoaching.de
Some more realistic standards you could hold
yourself accountable to (4)
Hide Mr. Hyde.
Have you come across those leaders who sometimes get a fit are shouting demeaning words to those
around them? You could argue they're being authentic. A little hot-tempered (with a smile you want to
slap off their face). I prefer the leaders who are able to keep their "narcissistic and abusive impulses" in
check.
11. intoactioncoaching.de
Some more realistic standards you could hold
yourself accountable to (5)
Don't preach or try to convert.
This is something that is quite interesting for the whole #diversity debate. You want people to be able to
bring their true self to work? Fine by me, but be careful not to impose your own worldview on others.
13. intoactioncoaching.de
Does your organisation - or you - want full
authenticity?
If there are people around you with only good qualities, of course you'd want them to be authentic and
express these. But what about the ones with "bad temper, poor social skills, neurotic and narcissistic
orientations, intolerance, non-mainstream political or religious orientations, problems with the other sex,
a dislike for certain professions or functions and other views that make collaboration difficult if these
come out in full bloom"?
14. intoactioncoaching.de
Is your authenticity a career stopper?
When it comes to your rating and the senior people debating behind closed doors whether or not to give
you that promotion... What will they look for? If you always "speak your truth" or if you're loyal to the
company and willing to go the direction that has been set? Now you may still want to choose "speaking
your truth". That's fine and can bring constructive dissent. (#rebel, anyone?) But be aware of the
consequences it might have. You can't have your cake and eat it in every company.
15. intoactioncoaching.de
Did you cross the line to being self-centred and
narcissistic?
In today's world, we can't get much done all on our own. We need to collaborate with others to get stuff
done. But, an "authentic person focusing highly on self-awareness [...] may put him or herself in the center
of the universe."
16. intoactioncoaching.de
Ready to be vulnerable?
Oh yes, this word. If our self is the focus of attention, rather than what we do, everything becomes
personal. Anyone who ever had to downsize a company will know that these are moments where you
want others to be as far as possible from your true self.
17. intoactioncoaching.de
Is authentic leadership blocking your
development?
When you stick to an ideal, it becomes very hard to evolve to adapt to the changes in your surroundings.
So rather than seeing these challenges as a threat to your (current) true self, why not us them as an
opportunity to become the next, better version of yourself?
