Life of Buddha: Before birth. About 2500 years ago Siddhartha Gautama was born south of the Himalayas near Nepal. Before and after his birth  there were signs that the child would be important. His  Mother dreamt of an  elephant carrying a  lotus flower, for  instance. Wise men foretold the live that Siddhartha would lead as  the Buddha.
Life of Buddha: Birth. The king was concerned about this prophesy. Therefore Siddhartha’s father decided that he  should be raised in luxury and  sheltered from  lives realities,  like illness, old  age, and  mortality.
The life of Buddha: the child. Siddhartha had a special way with animals. One day his cousin shot a swan whilst hunting. Siddhartha calmed and  treated the swan. His cousin was angry but Wise Men  decided the Swan  was Siddhartha’s  as he had saved it.
Life of Buddha: Marriage and family Siddhartha eventually married his cousin Princess Yashodhara and had a son.
Life of Buddha: leaving the Palace. In his twenties Prince Siddharta was out hunting  when they met someone bent with age, someone in pain, and  a funeral for  another.  Despite his  father’s wishes.
Life of Buddha: Disillusionment. After this hunting trip Siddhartha was disillusioned  with the life of luxury he led devoid of the realities  of life. He  encountered a Holy Man,  whose humble  way of live  impressed him.
Life of Buddha: The Great Renunciation. So Prince Siddhartha abandoned his high  station and embarked on a life as a ‘seeker after truth.’  He became  known as  plain Gotama.
Life of Buddha: Becoming a Sage. Gotama made many visits  to Holy people, and  lived a life of hardship for  seven years. He became known as Sakyamuni, the Sage of Sakya’s.
Life of Buddha: The awakening. Gotama realized that a harsh life was not working. Eventually  he decided to follow the ‘middle  path’ neither taking too little or too much. Then one day when  sitting under a Bodhi Tree  Gotama realized he was  undergoing profound change, he was awakening.
Life of Buddha: Nirvana. Gotama became known as Buddha and was said  to have reached Nirvana, when desire is  eliminated through  abandonment of  desires.
