Fibrtec Inc. developed a low-cost thermoplastic composite towpreg process called FibrFlex that directly extrudes thermoplastic resin pellets onto carbon, glass or aramid fibers, without requiring costly resin conversion. This allows FibrFlex towpreg to be used in various textile processes like UD fabrics, woven fabrics, braiding and filament winding. The towpreg also enables hybrid preforming by combining woven fabrics and UD tapes. Example parts made using FibrFlex towpreg include side covers, IED detectors, and aircraft seats, demonstrating its ability to produce complex geometry parts in thermoplastic composites.
