This document summarizes a study that evaluated the properties of incinerator bottom ash from municipal solid waste in Kano, Nigeria to determine potential uses. The bottom ash was found to have properties making it suitable for use as fill material, in road subgrades and sub-bases. Testing showed the bottom ash had specific gravity values from 1.86 to 2.37, moderate alkalinity, organic content from 5.07 to 10%, and contained metals. Permeability testing indicated the bottom ash was free-draining like sand. California Bearing Ratio values from 50-73% qualified it for use in subgrades, fills and sub-bases according to Nigerian standards. The study concluded the bottom ash could potentially substitute
