Athletic Shoe and Nike
NIKE 1 Nike has always remained on the preference list of athletes and athletic footwear was
indeed the first category of products launched by the company more than 30 years ago. Today, you
can see the craze for its products, not only among athletes, but also among golfers and other
sportspeople. Apart from that, Nike shoes and other accessories have also become the favorite
fashion products for teenagers. Thus, fashion, elegance and achievements are some of the associated
attributes of Nike products.
Early Days of Nike
Phil Knight, the starter of Nike revolution, began merchandising his athletic shoes designs, stores in

Key factors that influence success of NIKE
If a company is able to establish brand awareness, they will have a significant advantage in grabbing
consumer's attention and, therefore, market share. In today's society where consumers have
significantly less time to shop and compare, brand awareness is critical. If an established brand
name effectively conveys the messages of quality and dependability, consumers will automatically
go to that brand relying on the image that has been created when they don't have time to shop
around. Manufacturing efficiency is something that companies are constantly striving for as well.
Athletic shoe manufacturers must balance the costs of labor, raw materials, shipping, import tariffs,
and technological advancements. In an effort to keeps costs down, the industry has been looking to
overseas sourcing. This reduces the risk of losing revenue if one region which a manufacturer incurs
problems. Favorable legislation regarding foreign manufacturing has led to a huge increase in
foreign sourcing. Overseas production and sourcing can lower material, and labor costs. The
footwear companies must choose their distribution channels carefully because they want to make
the product available, yet remain true to their image and goals. Retailers account for the largest
percentage of sales, so manufacturers must be especially careful with their relationships with them.

Abstract:
In this report a comparison of three Braking systems; Calliper, Drum and Disc will be made on a
variety of areas including – * * Effectiveness * Performance * Features * Materials * Frictional
Components * Difference from comparable car systems
An Orthogonal and Pictorial drawing will also be provided on a selected section of one of the
braking systems being compared.
Introduction:
Bicycle Braking systems are a means of which we are able to halt the movement of a bicycle
through the expulsion of kinetic energy. The Kinetic potential energy that is present in a moving
bicycle is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Performance:
The performance of a braking system is based on the raw stopping power and ability for one single
use. This comparison will be based purely on stopping power and performance, disregarding things
such as; * Weight of system * Weather/Terrain * Brake Fading * Heat Dissipation
The Disc Brake is said to have the greatest stopping power, and therefore provides least stopping
distance, of all three systems. This means they are often fitted to competitive riders bikes, because
they are often going a higher speed and therefore need the greater stopping power that the disc brake
provides compared to that of the drum and calliper braking system.
In a report By Guy Kesteven for UK organisation 'What Mountain Bike', a variety of disc brakes
were tested from many different manufacturers to test the power of each system. The test was
performed as follows:
"All the brakes were tested with a 180mm rotor and a 50Nm force on the lever (1N is the amount of
force required to accelerate 1kg at 1m/s2), with the stock pads. To fully bed in the rotors and pads,
the brakes were given 60 one–second pulls at 15km/h, followed by 30 two–second pulls at 20km/h.
After a 30–second cooling–down period, the testing began.
With the wheel spinning at 30km/h, each brake was applied for three seconds and then left to
recover for 10 seconds. This cycle was repeated 15 times. The results were then averaged out to
provide a single

Biking Informative Speech
Biking is a hobby enjoyed by millions of people around the world. There's nothing quite like the
feeling of the open road beneath your pedals as you ride. Whether it's on the street or off–roading,
biking is a pastime that almost everyone enjoys.
However, if you're new to biking, or just haven't had much experience doing it, you may be
wondering how to get started. While you could just theoretically buy the first bike you see, if you
want to have a comfortable experience, it's important that you choose the right set of wheels.
Today I'll be talking about the best entry level road bikes to help you get started. Whether you're just

Since this bike is made of aluminum, it's both lightweight and surprisingly durable. If you're looking
for something simple that will last for years, this is a great bike to get.
Shimano makes some of the best gears and shifters (called derailleurs) in the industry, and the
Vilano comes with both, so you know that it will be easy to use and shift remarkably well. This bike
has 21 speeds to choose from, so you get the best ride possible.
Durability is the name of the game with this bike, as it is made with 6061 Double Butted Aluminum.
What that means is that the metal is thicker around the joints for extra strength, while the tubing
itself is thinner so you get the least weight possible. Overall, this is one of the lightest and strongest
bikes available from Vilano.
This model also comes with alloy caliper brakes. What this means is that the brakes press against
the rim of the tire to slow you down, as opposed to disc brakes, which press against a metal disk in
the center of the tire. The brakes are controlled via triggers on the handlebars.
For your riding comfort, the Vilano also has a thick padded seat that's designed for casual street

mountain biking. Through the program, our youth will develop more lean and athletic bodies,
excellence though teamwork and professionalism and gain greater respect for their surrounding
communities and our environment. These are only a few of the areas that our youth will benefit
from. NICA does this by reaching out to the school systems, and local bike shops. The schools put

1. Does Shimano's home base fit Porter's definition of an advantaged location? 2. Did the
advantages or disadvantages of its location change over time? If so, how did Shimano respond –
does it fit Porter's framework of a global strategy? 3. Would you recommend that Shimano develop
additional functions in North America (besides sales and service) as it has in Asia and in Europe?

This vast market share achievement evidences the lack of domestic competition and further
weakening of Japan as an advantaged location. During this period, Shimano also began establishing
production and marketing operations beyond the borders of Japan, a strategy to help shield the
company from the recession that followed the Oil Shock of the 1970s, as well as to take advantage
of favorable factor conditions and related and supporting industries in Singapore. Singapore was an
ideal location because it shared Japan's cultural commitment to superior quality manufacturing.
Although Shimano's structure remained aligned with the cultural values of Japan, and its domestic
strategies leveraged them by aiming education at developing the Japanese market, the strength in
this point of Porter's diamond was not enough to maintain Japan as an advantaged location. Despite
its home–base's disadvantaged location, Shimano was able to simulate strong demand and factor
conditions, diminishing the impact of location on its success.

Shimano Case Analysis Essay
Shimano is a manufacturer of mechanical bike components for mid– to high–end road bikes. They
do not make frames and they do not sell directly to customers via retail stores, but rather to bike
manufacturers that want to use Shimano's components. They have been, by far, the leader in their
industry for years. They netted around a 14 percent profit margin, dwarfing that of almost all bike
manufacturers, and did so using their many competitive advantages over rivaling brands. Shimano's

Difficult for competitors to imitate Lance Armstrong's relationship with Shimano also worked in
Shimano's favor. It was well known that a strong majority of the components on Armstrong's racing
bike were made by Shimano. This created a brand image for Shimano that was nearly impossible for
any other brand to imitate, largely due to the fact that there are very few other high profile cyclists
in the world. Several manufacturers such as Cannondale, Trek and Specialized made attempts to
make their own components, but few found any major success. This was because homemade
components turned–out to be far more expensive than Shimano's products. The difficulty to imitate
created a competitive edge deriving from their attitude towards constant progressive innovation.
Resource Assessment Shimano's employees are the most valuable resource that the company
possesses. Out of their 5,400 employees, one quarter of them are assigned to research and
development; however R&D alone is not where the value originates. Cooperation between the
production and marketing teams provides the company with an intangible asset that fuels Shimano's
innovation. The collaboration between these departments is extremely valuable to the company's
guiding principle to inspire and strive for continuous improvement. This is a rare philosophy was
not common amongst manufacturers in this industry. Shimano exploited this

Essay On Gearers
These gears provide a balance between torque and horsepower, and this allows them to be a go–to
gear when the rider is not sure about the distance faced. Middle gears are also there to get rid of
cross chaining, which will be explained later. All of this shows that middle gears do, in fact, have a
purpose, and aren't just there for show.
Due to human errors when guessing the optimal time to switch gears, there is a new possible
innovation in the world of gearing systems. Using an electronic mechanism that measures speed,
gearing could now be fully electronized. This would also further improve acceleration, as the
pedaling efficiency would always be at the peak.
Another advantage of this is that it would help to get rid of a problem in ... Show more content on

These fully electronic gearing mechanisms are made for racers and a few select. Although some
people enjoy manually shifting such transmissions, others do not and merely want to enjoy the
pleasure of riding the bicycle and the exercise they receive without being bothered with the need to
look ahead in time for gear shifting decisions and manipulations. Such people often shift improperly
causing damage to the vehicle and a rough uncomfortable ride. For them, this electronic gearing
would give them everything they want.
With all of this innovation in the world of bike gear mechanisms, it's no wonder that derailleur
systems have their own history. The start of this story begins with the various systems integrated
into safety bikes in the late 19th century. One example of the derailleur system is the Protean two–
speed derailleur available on the Whippet safety bicycles.
In 1937, the derailleur system was introduced to the Tour de France, allowing riders to change gears
without having to remove wheels. Formerly, riders would have to dismount in the middle of the race
to change their wheel from downhill to uphill mode. This new innovation allowed bikers to ride
efficiently and without stop, which meant that they could transition in between uphill and downhill
instantly, without having to switch tires.
Although they were known as a price of equipment on

Improving System Performance: The Evolution of Concepts Designed to Optimize System
Performance Over the Past 25 Years
CMIS 310
UMUC
Abstract
Since the invention of the first computer, engineers have been conceptualizing and implementing
ways to optimize system performance. The last 25 years have seen a rapid evolution of many of
these concepts, particularly cache memory, virtual memory, pipelining, and reduced set instruction
computing (RISC). Individual each one of these concepts has helped to increase speed and
efficiency thus enhancing overall system performance. Most systems today make use of many, if not
all of these concepts. Arguments can be made to support the importance of any one of these

This would mean programmers would have to edit their code every time they changed machines or
added more memory (Lemley, 1999). Early computers had small amounts of RAM because storage
technology was very expensive. Programmers had to store master copies of programs on a
secondary storage system and pull pieces into RAM as needed. The process of deciding which
pieces to pull and which parts of RAM to replace was called "overlaying" (Denning, 2012). "It was
estimated that most programmers spent half to two–thirds of their time planning overlay sequences.
A reliable method of automating it had potential to increase programmer productivity and reduce
debugging by several fold" (Denning, 2012). Thus, the concept of virtual memory was born. This
concept makes use of the computer's hard drive when main memory runs out. However, the hard
drive is significantly slower than RAM so we want to keep most of the program functioning in
RAM thus specialized hardware and software is needed to give the illusion of unlimited available
fast memory (Lemley, 1999). This hardware converts a "virtual" address to a physical address in
memory. Aside from virtually increasing memory size, virtual memory also provided three
additional benefits, "it isolated users from each other, it allowed dynamic relocation of program
pieces within RAM, and it provided read – write access control to individual pieces" (Denning,
2012). It is for these

How to Communicate with a Fish
It's 5 A.M. and the darkness surrounds us. The sun and the birds will rise in about one hour. Our
blue baseball caps rest next to us on the front seat of the truck. The boat is ready with equipment,
supplies, and of course, our lunch for the day. Now, let's catch a fish...or two. Determining where
the fish are biting is our first key to success. The water must be calm, clean, lukewarm, and an
average depth of sixteen feet. There is a perfect spot we know about nestled around an island in a
nearby lake. Before placing the boat into the water, the check to see if the oars are attached and
ready for rowing. Go lightly with the Sevylor 12V trolling motor to the perfect spot using the depth
finder. Drop the anchors slowly so that you do not scare the fish away. Before we begin to fish, we
must first take care of a few items. Selecting a pole is next on deck and it is determined by many
factors, including the type of material. Two types that I prefer are graphite and fiberglass. The
combination makes a high quality, resistant, yet flexible, pole that gives just enough to fool the fish
into thinking they are about to eat breakfast. The handle should be made of cork and should also be
of a high quality, light material, allowing a comfortable grip. The right cork can also transmit the

Modernity of Japanese Women
Both "Naomi" and "The neighbor's wife and mine" are representative stories of westernization of
Japanese culture. Naomi was written by Junichiro Tanizaki and published in newspaper in 1924. It
demonstrates aestheticism and created the word naomism that represents the modern girl. The
neighbor's wife and mine is also a story that shows how Japanese people were longing to be like
westerners. Both are stories of transition from classic Japanese culture to modern western style
culture. I would like to describe how each story represents modernity and the difference of each
women modernization.

She silently began make something on the sewing machine and with the loud noise showed that she
is angry. With nonverbal behavior she got a new dress. In contrast to the wife in The neighbor's wife
and mine, Naomi acted totally different when she desired something. She does not hesitate to ask
Joji for a new dress. She feels that it is his duty to buy her a new cloth to keep her beautiful. Second,
the status of women in the relationship between men and women is different. In The neighbor's wife
and mine, Shimano's wife respects her husband and never forgets to stand by him. For instance,
when Shimano was playing game with his friends at late night, she did not feel confortable because
her children were sleeping and she wanted to go to bed. However, she did not say anything to the
gests because she knows it embarrass her husband in front of his friends. Quite and modest was the
way woman needed to be. In contrast, Naomi points out that man and woman should be equal. She
does not think that woman needs to follow her husband. For example, it is to bring shame to her
husband to be along together with a single man. However, she does not hesitate to do it, and says
"we are just friend." This action is unacceptable in traditional Japanese culture. According to the

Ingredient Branding of Industrial Goods
Ingredient Branding of Industrial Goods:
A case study of two distinct different automotive suppliers
Waldemar Pfoertsch[1] / Johannes Rid[2] / Christian Linder[3]
Abstract
This paper concerns ingredient branding; more specifically, ingredient branding for industrial goods.
Although research in ingredient branding has been quite intensive in the area of fast moving
consumer goods, considerably less research has been carried out for industrial goods. In this paper,
the authors provide insight into whether successful ingredient branding can be transferred to
industries where it has not been a common phenomenon: automotive suppliers.
Two major companies in the automotive industry are analyzed in this paper: Autoliv, a major player

2. Can you ingredient brand where branding is not a common phenomenon?
The reason companies start to co–operate is due to technological and psychological changes of the
business environment. There are two reasons why this occurs (Uggla, 2000): First, technology and
new distribution patterns open up new possibilities for cooperation where brand extension and brand
alliances become more interesting from a strategic point of view. Second, consumers look for risk
reduction, and brand extension and brand alliances might be the right strategies to reduce consumer
risk. Strategies to meet the demands of a changing world are co–branding and ingredient branding.
There are some good examples of ingredient branding of durable goods on the market, such as
Shimano as a component supplier of cycles, and Intel in the computer industry. Intel, for instance,
"positioned itself to be the heart and soul of personal computers. The strategy was to create a brand,
and it worked – for PCs" (Karolefski, 2001). In other industries that produce industrial goods, like
the car industry, ingredient branding has not been a common strategy. The primary question that
guides us through this paper is: Is it possible for industrial goods industry like the automotive
industry to adopt an ingredient brand when ingredient branding is not a common phenomenon?

The Syncretism Of Buddhist And Daoist Religious Practices
The Syncretism of Buddhist and Daoist Religious Practices upon their Initial Interactions in China
Looking throughout history, there are many instances in which cultures and ideologies mirror
biological and scientific phenomena. Often ideas will propagate much like a species would in
certain environments. Like Darwin's finches, notions regarding religion, culture, or any other system
of thought, struggle to survive through competition with other systems of ideas. Instead of having
offspring that are able to survive longer, these ideologies will fight for converts to further the spread
of their beliefs. But in nature it is rare that two species will actually come to learn how to live with
each other, and adapt to become stronger from their interaction. Much like when Buddhism
immigrated to China, carrying ideals similar to the native Daoist principles, the interaction between
the two religions triggered a drastic change in both. This syncretism occurred on account of the
competition in the Chinese environment. Specifically, both held similar beliefs, which caused the
two to fall into direct competition. In particular, the entry of Buddhism in China was accomplished
by way of using Daoist principles and former Daoist to spread their beliefs, which immediately
impacted Buddhism by means of its translation. The early success of Buddhism in China forced
Daoism to either adapt or become extinct. This interaction between the two caused both to adapt and
develop similar religious

Drawing on the information and researched gathered using ethnographic data, in groups we have
progressed from choosing between a hardware and scenario, refining the chosen scenario and
creating concepts to find a solution to the problems that have come up from the research on our
scenario context, documenting the journey to our refined context and concepts. Further development
and refinement of a concept is necessary in order to test and evolve it. This report discusses the
psychological and emotional experiences held by commuters on trains. Various methods of
observation and readings have been employed into refining the context of our research and
exploring different avenues in order to quantify our knowledge of Ethnographic Data to get to the
concepts.
Ethnography is the study of cultural and social phenomena. It's is described by Brian Hoey as
something "equated with virtually any qualitative research project (e.g., see Research Gateway)
where the intent is to provide a detailed, in–depth description of everyday life and practice." The
multiple ways of gathering data are; observing a group in their natural environment and habitual
tendencies, video, questionnaires, interviews, photographs and many more. Categorising and
presenting the data could be in the form of quantitative or qualitative data; quantitative being things
that can be measured in numerical values and descriptions while qualitative goes into details, mostly
observed and not measured dealing with

Authors have even noted trends toward increasing modularity (particularly in the United States) in
educational curricula, architecture, literature, and music (Blair, 1988). Modularity exponentially
increases the number of possible configurations achievable from a given set of inputs, greatly
increasing the flexibility of a system. However, research also indicates that not all systems migrate
toward increasing modularity; some appear to follow a path toward increasing integration. In
product systems, for example, sets of components that once were easily mixed and matched may
sometimes be bundled into a single integrated package that does not allow (or that discourages)
substitution of other components. Many commonly used software applications are now bundled into
"software suites" that promote seam– 2000 Schilling 313 less integration. Although they do not
prohibit using other vendor components, they discourage it by offering dramatically improved
performance through the combination of the particular set of applications. Even bicycle
componentryonce typically sold as individual components, such as brakes, gear sets, cranks, and
derailleurs–now is sold predominantly in integrated component bundles that may not be mixed and
matched. In organizational systems, researchers have noted that whereas in many industries firms
other industries appear to be disaggregating, (e.g., banking and health care) are characterized by

Shimano Inc. Management Analysis
Since its establishment in Japan in 1921, Shimano, Inc. (originally known as Shimano Tekkojo and
henceforth referred to as "Shimano") has based its business headquarters in Japan–first in Sakai,
then later in the industrialized hubs of Tokyo and Nagoya. Through the end of the twentieth century,
Shimano was recognized as a major player in the global market of bicycle components
manufacturing and distribution to both Europe and the U.S. But stagnated product sales and
competition abroad in the early 2000's, most notably from the American competitor SRAM
Corporation, had a negative impact on its international market growth. Besides global and local
economics, stagnated sales, and stiff competition abroad (especially in the U.S. where more
provocative bicycle designs captured a majority of the domestic and European market share once
dominated by Shimano), the location of its home base has does not appear to have played a major
role in the decline of Shimano's once global competitive edge. If we take into account Porter's
Diamond Model of Competitive Advantage and its relation to Shimano's management location in
the last century, we can see that all four attributes of factor conditions, demand conditions, related
and supported industries, and firm strategy, structure and rivalry are reflective of the firm's inability
to sustain its brand prosperity.
Factor Conditions: Although increased labor costs and lack of available workforce led Shimano to
relocate its production

Design Thinking And The Developmental Program Essay
A. Introduction Organizations with design thinking can collect data at all organizational levels of
their organizations through their choice of methods, at both regular time periods and on an ongoing
basis to find the necessary information. "Such a strategy can eliminate unnecessary relationships;
register inputs from the external environment accurately (i.e. more avenues of direct communication
to the environment with less filtering) and create more opportunities for autonomous information for
gathering and making sense of the information" (Burke, 2011, pg.324). This focused strategic
position of design thinking makes data collection a dynamic and vital practice. With these
mentioned above, practical strategies through design thinking and the developmental program can
definitely give optimal performance in organizations. B. What are the key characteristics of design
thinking? In every known age, techniques for problem solving becomes different since they are
characteristically based on the new knowledge, tools, and technologies available during that period
of time. Today's digital age, one of the problem–solving techniques is increasingly using design
thinking. Understanding the concept of design thinking is to study a few key characteristics that
should help enlighten it. There are many characteristics of design thinking that are well known, but
it is not a recent invention. It has been around for a while. The digital age happens to force all of us

Climate
The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate due to a long coast with the Atlantic Ocean.1 The
Atlantic Ocean influences the climate by giving the Netherlands cool summers along with moderate
winters; much milder when compared to Ontario's continental climate.2 The daytime temperatures
range from 2°C–6°C in the winter and 17°C–20°C in the summer.3 The Netherlands also
experiences wet weather year–round with little snowfall during the winter. Rain is predominant
during the winter and fall and less frequent during spring and summer.4 Extreme cold is a rare

The main materials used are rubber, steel and plastic. The rubber starts out in rubber plantations by
farmers in Thailand, being a tier three supplier, and is then produced and shipped out by the Thai
Rubber Latex Corporation, being a second tier supplier.18 The steel starts out in Australia, as iron
ore, in mines excavated by Rio Tinto, being the tier three suppliers.19 Next, the iron is shipped from
Australia to China, Mexico, Taiwan, and Japan, again by Rio Tinto.20 Following, the iron ore is
received by Baosteel, in China, being a second tier supplier, where it is transformed into steel.21
Ensuing, multiple companies such as Weinmann, microSHIFT, Shimano, KMC, Promax, Louis
Garneau, Pro Wheel, and Full Speed Ahead receive the steel and rubber, and manufacture it into the
respective parts needed for the bicycles. Weinmann China manufactures the wheels and rims,
microSHIFT produces the front derailleur, and Pro Wheel manufactures the crankset, all from
Shenzhen, China.[22][23] The steel is also shipped out to Shimano, a Japanese company, where the
shift levers, the cassette, and the brake levers are created.24 KMC, Promax, and Full Speed Ahead
also receive the steel at the plants in Taiwan, where the bicycle chain, breaks, and the headset are
created.[25][26] The steel is also sent to Mexico, where Louis Garneau manufactures the frame,
fork, stem, handlebar, and grips.27 Weinmann, microSHIFT, Shimano, KMC, Promax, Louis
Garneau, Pro Wheel, and Full Speed Ahead are all first tier suppliers. Subsequently, all the parts are
then shipped to the Louis Garneau plant in Mexico, where the bikes are assembled, ultimately
reaching the enterprise.28 Next, the bikes are shipped to Louis Garneau's Canadian Warehouse in
Quebec.29 From there, the bikes are shipped to the Rotterdam port and then on to Amsterdam and
Rotterdam by Neelevat, being the distributor. In Amsterdam and

Performance: The performance of a braking system is based on the raw stopping power and ability for one single use. This comparison will be based purely on stopping power and performance, disregarding things such as; * Weight of system * Weather/Terrain * Brake Fading * Heat Dissipation The Disc Brake is said to have the greatest stopping power, and therefore provides least stopping distance, of all three systems. This means they are often fitted to competitive riders bikes, because they are often going a higher speed and therefore need the greater stopping power that the disc brake provides compared to that of the drum and calliper braking system. In a report By Guy Kesteven for UK organisation 'What Mountain Bike', a variety of disc brakes were tested from many different manufacturers to test the power of each system. The test was performed as follows: "All the brakes were tested with a 180mm rotor and a 50Nm force on the lever (1N is the amount of

Several manufacturers such as Cannondale, Trek and Specialized made attempts to make their own components, but few found any major success. This was because homemade components turned–out to be far more expensive than Shimano's products. Middle gears are also there to get rid of cross chaining, which will be explained later. All of this shows that middle gears do, in fact, have a purpose, and aren't just there for show. Due to human errors when guessing the optimal time to switch gears, there is a new possible innovation in the world of gearing systems. This would mean programmers would have to edit their code every time they changed machines or added more memory (Lemley, 1999). Early computers had small amounts of RAM because storage technology was very expensive. Programmers had to store master copies of programs on a secondary storage system and pull pieces into RAM as needed. The process of deciding which pieces to pull and which parts of RAM to replace was called "overlaying" (Denning, 2012). "It was estimated that most programmers spent half to two–thirds of their time planning overlay sequences. A reliable method of automating it had potential to increase programmer productivity and reduce debugging by several fold" (Denning, 2012). Thus, the concept of virtual memory was born. This concept makes use of the computer's hard drive when main memory runs out. However, the hard drive is significantly slower than RAM so we want to keep most of the program functioning in RAM thus specialized hardware and software is needed to give the illusion of unlimited available fast memory (Lemley, 1999). This hardware converts a "virtual" address to a physical address in memory. Aside from virtually increasing memory size, virtual memory also provided three additional benefits, "it isolated users from each other, it allowed dynamic relocation of program pieces within RAM, and it provided read – write access control to individual pieces" (Denning, 2012). Ingredient Branding of Industrial Goods Ingredient Branding of Industrial Goods: A case study of two distinct different automotive suppliers Waldemar Pfoertsch[1] / Johannes Rid[2] / Christian Linder[3] Abstract This paper concerns ingredient branding; more specifically, ingredient branding for industrial goods. Although research in ingredient branding has been quite intensive in the area of fast moving consumer goods, considerably less research has been carried out for industrial goods. In this paper, the authors provide insight into whether successful ingredient branding can be transferred to industries where it has not been a common phenomenon: automotive suppliers. Can you ingredient brand where branding is not a common phenomenon? The reason companies start to co–operate is due to technological and psychological changes of the business environment. There are two reasons why this occurs (Uggla, 2000): First, technology and new distribution patterns open up new possibilities for cooperation where brand extension and brand alliances become more interesting from a strategic point of view. Second, consumers look for risk reduction, and brand extension and brand alliances might be the right strategies to reduce consumer risk. Strategies to meet the demands of a changing world are co–branding and ingredient branding. There are some good examples of ingredient branding of durable goods on the market, such as Shimano as a component supplier of cycles, and Intel in the computer industry. Intel, for instance, "positioned itself to be the heart and soul of personal computers. The strategy was to create a brand, and it worked – for PCs" (Karolefski, 2001). In other industries that produce industrial goods, like the car industry, ingredient branding has not been a common strategy. The primary question that guides us through this paper is: Is it possible for industrial goods industry like the automotive industry to adopt an ingredient brand when ingredient branding is not a common phenomenon? 3. Analyzing with real world data In this paper, real world data from two different companies were collected and

  • 26. The Syncretism Of Buddhist And Daoist Religious Practices The Syncretism of Buddhist and Daoist Religious Practices upon their Initial Interactions in China Looking throughout history, there are many instances in which cultures and ideologies mirror biological and scientific phenomena. Often ideas will propagate much like a species would in certain environments. Like Darwin's finches, notions regarding religion, culture, or any other system of thought, struggle to survive through competition with other systems of ideas. Instead of having offspring that are able to survive longer, these ideologies will fight for converts to further the spread of their beliefs. But in nature it is rare that two species will actually come to learn how to live with each other, and adapt to become stronger from their interaction. Much like when Buddhism immigrated to China, carrying ideals similar to the native Daoist principles, the interaction between the two religions triggered a drastic change in both. This syncretism occurred on account of the competition in the Chinese environment. Specifically, both held similar beliefs, which caused the two to fall into direct competition. In particular, the entry of Buddhism in China was accomplished by way of using Daoist principles and former Daoist to spread their beliefs, which immediately impacted Buddhism by means of its translation. The early success of Buddhism in China forced Daoism to either adapt or become extinct. This interaction between the two caused both to adapt and develop similar religious ... Drawing on the information and researched gathered using ethnographic data, in groups we have progressed from choosing between a hardware and scenario, refining the chosen scenario and creating concepts to find a solution to the problems that have come up from the research on our scenario context, documenting the journey to our refined context and concepts. Further development and refinement of a concept is necessary in order to test and evolve it. This report discusses the psychological and emotional experiences held by commuters on trains. Various methods of observation and readings have been employed into refining the context of our research and exploring different avenues in order to quantify our knowledge of Ethnographic Data to get to the concepts. Ethnography is the study of cultural and social phenomena. The multiple ways of gathering data are; observing a group in their natural environment and habitual tendencies, video, questionnaires, interviews, photographs and many more. Authors have even noted trends toward increasing modularity (particularly in the United States) in educational curricula, architecture, literature, and music (Blair, 1988). Modularity exponentially increases the number of possible configurations achievable from a given set of inputs, greatly increasing the flexibility of a system. However, research also indicates that not all systems migrate toward increasing modularity; some appear to follow a path toward increasing integration. In product systems, for example, sets of components that once were easily mixed and matched may sometimes be bundled into a single integrated package that does not allow (or that discourages) substitution of other components. Many commonly used software applications are now bundled into "software suites" that promote seam– 2000 Schilling 313 less integration. Although they do not prohibit using other vendor components, they discourage it by offering dramatically improved performance through the combination of the particular set of applications. Even bicycle componentryonce typically sold as individual components, such as brakes, gear sets, cranks, and derailleurs–now is sold predominantly in integrated component bundles that may not be mixed and matched. • 29. Shimano Inc. Management Analysis Since its establishment in Japan in 1921, Shimano, Inc. (originally known as Shimano Tekkojo and henceforth referred to as "Shimano") has based its business headquarters in Japan–first in Sakai, then later in the industrialized hubs of Tokyo and Nagoya. Through the end of the twentieth century, Shimano was recognized as a major player in the global market of bicycle components manufacturing and distribution to both Europe and the U.S. But stagnated product sales and competition abroad in the early 2000's, most notably from the American competitor SRAM Corporation, had a negative impact on its international market growth. Besides global and local economics, stagnated sales, and stiff competition abroad (especially in the U.S. where more provocative bicycle designs captured a majority of the domestic and European market share once dominated by Shimano), the location of its home base has does not appear to have played a major role in the decline of Shimano's once global competitive edge. If we take into account Porter's Diamond Model of Competitive Advantage and its relation to Shimano's management location in the last century, we can see that all four attributes of factor conditions, demand conditions, related and supported industries, and firm strategy, structure and rivalry are reflective of the firm's inability to sustain its brand prosperity. Factor Conditions: Although increased labor costs and lack of available workforce led Shimano to relocate its production ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Design Thinking And The Developmental Program Essay A. Introduction Organizations with design thinking can collect data at all organizational levels of their organizations through their choice of methods, at both regular time periods and on an ongoing basis to find the necessary information. "Such a strategy can eliminate unnecessary relationships; register inputs from the external environment accurately (i.e. more avenues of direct communication to the environment with less filtering) and create more opportunities for autonomous information for gathering and making sense of the information" (Burke, 2011, pg.324). This focused strategic position of design thinking makes data collection a dynamic and vital practice. With these mentioned above, practical strategies through design thinking and the developmental program can definitely give optimal performance in organizations. B. What are the key characteristics of design thinking? In every known age, techniques for problem solving becomes different since they are characteristically based on the new knowledge, tools, and technologies available during that period of time.
