- 2. Butterflies • Did you know when butterflies are young they look like this? • They are called caterpillars and are completely different from an adult butterfly.
- 3. Butterflies Are you telling me I used to look like that? How is that possible?

Butterflies • Butterflies go through a life cycle, just like all living beings or organisms. • A life cycle is the series of changes an organism goes through during its life. • People have a life cycle beginning as a baby and growing into an adult, ready to have their own babies. All plants and animals are organisms.

- 6. The Life Cycle of a Human • The life cycle of a butterfly is a little bit different than a human’s. • A butterfly’s life cycle involves something called metamorphosis. • Their life cycles have four stages. • Let’s find out more. The Life Cycle of a Butterfly
- 7. STAGE 1: EGGS • The female butterfly lays her eggs. • The shape of the eggs depend on the species of butterfly it is. • The time it takes for the egg to hatch also depends on the species. They usually lay their eggs on stems or leaves. This is so when the eggs hatch, the caterpillars will have food to eat. Stage 2: Caterpillars • Once the caterpillar leaves its egg, it immediately begins to eat. • Eating is pretty much a caterpillar’s only job. • In order to get so big, they will shed their skin four times or more! Here is a freshly hatched caterpillar as it has already begun to feast. As they eat, they continue to grow and grow. Some caterpillars can become 100 times bigger than they were when they first came out of the This caterpillar has recently shed its skin. The process of skin shedding is called molting.

Caterpillars • When caterpillars are fully grown they are ready to make the transition into an adult. • This begins the third stage and its called the pupa stage. • The pupa wrap themselves in a protective casing to guard against dangers. • After the transformation, the case splits open and the new adult butterfly makes its entrance into the world. Stage 3: Pupa They begin by spinning silk and using it to attach themselves to the underside of a safe surface. At this stage, the organs and body of the caterpillar basically turn into mush and transform into something completely different. Here you can see a butterfly right after it emerged from its casing.

Stage 4: Adult Butterfly • When the adult butterfly first leaves its casing, it is not ready to fly. • Once its wings are strong and dry, it flies off in search of food. • It also begins its quest to find a mate and reproduce. This is because its wings are soft and moist. Most butterflies feed on the nectar of flowers. The butterflies mate, reproduce, and the cycle starts all over again.
