The document provides details of a science lesson plan about the life cycles of insects. It discusses complete and incomplete metamorphosis, and uses the example of the butterfly's life cycle which has four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. The lesson explains that insects either undergo complete metamorphosis with four stages, or incomplete metamorphosis with three stages of egg, nymph, and adult.

A. Preliminary Activities
Before we start our lesson for this
morning, may I ask Yaasin Bacarat to
lead the prayer.
It’s a beautiful Friday morning!
Good morning Einstein!
Very good! I am happy to hear
that. Before you take your seats let us
sing first the song “My toes, my
knees” our improvised song.
Great! you may now take your
seats.
Before we anything else, I just
want to remind you with the major
rule you need to follow. You need to
raise your right hand if you want to
ask some questions or if you want to
answer. But if I saw someone who is
not listening and who is busy talking
with her/his seatmates, I will
Ameen.
Good morning teacher, Sheila

head. 2x let’s all clap hands together.
Thank you, teacher.

automatically call her/his name even
he/she did not raise their hands.
Is it clear, class?
Are you excited to learn class?
Very good! Einstein.
B. Review
Okay, so who can still remember
our topic last meeting? Anyone?
Yes, Norjehan Mostapa?
Very good! It was all about gall
bladder. What is a gall bladder?
Yes, Hadji Usman?
Very good! It is a small pouch that
sits just under the liver and where bile
is stored and concentrated before it
released into the small intestine.
C. Motivation
This time I will show you some
pictures.
Baby
What do you think it is, class?
Yes, Umpa?
Very good! It is a baby.
How about the second picture?
A teenager
Great! It is boy and he wears a
school uniform.
How about the third one?
Excellent! The third picture is A
man who wears a suit and he have a
work already.
Yes, teacher.

What do you think will be the
next?
Grandfather
Great! The last picture is a
grandfather or an old man.
Now, what do you think these
pictures are all about?
Very good! It is all about the life
cycle.
But this morning we will be
discussing about the life cycle of some
insects.
D. Lesson proper
Have you seen an insect? Can
you give an example of an insects that
you know?
Yes? Aguam?
Very good! Bees, ants, beetles,
grasshopper and so on are few
examples of an insects. Did you know
that there are more than 800, 000
different kinds of insects?
So, in your own words what is a
life cycle?
Yes, Abdulwali?
Very good! A life cycle is the
series of changes an animal goes
through during its life. Every living
thing has a life cycle, which is a series
of stages it goes through during its

life. Different kinds of animals have
different life cycles.
When some animals hatch or
are born, they look very different
from the adults. A young animal
changes during its life cycle. An
animal that undergoes an extreme
change in its body form during its life
is said to experience metamorphosis.
So, what is metamorphosis?
Great! Metamorphosis is the
changes of an animal or an insect
from one form to another as it
progresses to adulthood.
All insects undergo
metamorphosis as part of their life
cycles. Insects undergo either
complete metamorphosis or
incomplete metamorphosis.
What are the two kinds of
metamorphosis?
Yes, Hebbah?
Very good!
Let’s discuss first the first kind
which is the complete
metamorphosis.
More than 80% of insects,
including the flies, beetles, bees,
butterfly and moths go through
complete metamorphosis. The life
cycle of an organism that undergoes
complete metamorphosis consists of
four stages again how many stages it
has?
It is the change of an animal or an insect
from one form to another as it progresses
to adulthood.
Complete and incomplete metamorphosis
4 stages
5. 5
What are these? Yes, Sulog?
The egg, the larva, the
pupa, and the adult are the stages in
complete metamorphosis.
All insects begin life as an egg
that was laid by an adult female insect.
The egg hatches and a larva emerge.
A larva usually looks like a worm.
The larva is the eating and growing
stage.
After the egg hatches and a larva
emerges what will be the next stage?
Very good!
After the larva has eaten and
grown, the organism enters a resting
stage, when it does not feed or move
around much. This stage of the life
cycle is called the pupa. The pupa
stage can last from a few days to many
months. Eventually, an adult emerges
from the pupa stage. Adult female
insects continue the life cycle by
reproducing and laying eggs.
The other type of metamorphosis
in insects is incomplete
metamorphosis. Dragonflies,
grasshoppers, and true bugs undergo
incomplete metamorphosis.
How many stages are there in
incomplete metamorphosis?
What are these? Yes, Yaasin?
These insects have three stages
in their lives. An egg is the first stage

It is a pupa.

of life. The egg hatches, and the
animal is called a nymph, which is the
second stage of life. A nymph eats and
grows. It eats the same kind of food
the adults eat. In fact, most nymphs
look like miniature adults. The main
difference is that nymphs don’t have
wings. A nymph becomes an adult,
which is the third stage in
its life. At that point, the insect
has wings and is able to reproduce.
Now, that you know the two
kinds of metamorphosis, who can
give the difference and similarities of
the two?
Yes, Fatma?
Very good!
Let’s give an example the life
cycle of butterfly.
What do you think a butterfly has
undergo? A complete or incomplete
metamorphosis?
Why?
What are these?
Yes, Jaffar?
Very good.
We all love butterflies for their
beautiful, brightly-coloured wings.
Do you love them? But did you know
that these fab flyers begin life as
something completely different? As
they grow, they undergo one seriously

terrific transformation. What do you
call this transformation?
Yes, Kahmela?
Very good!
It all starts when a female
butterfly lays her eggs, usually on
leaves or stems of plants. Inside these
tiny eggs, caterpillars grow.
Depending on the species, the eggs
can vary in shape and texture – they
can be round, oval or cylindrical, and
smooth, bumpy or wrinkled. The time
it takes for the eggs to hatch can also
vary – in some species, they will hatch
within a few weeks and in others they
will only hatch once the weather is
warm enough.
Once the weather is warm
enough how long will it be to be able
to hatch the egg?
The second stage is the
caterpillar. Once ready, the caterpillar
leaves its egg home and enters the big
outside world! they actually eat their
way out of the egg and immediately
start chomping on the leaves of the
host plant. During this stage, they
shed their skin four or five times Why
do you think they need to shed their
skin?
Very good
As the caterpillar grows, its skin
becomes too tight and splits open,
revealing a new, larger skin
underneath. A fully-grown caterpillar
can be over 100 times larger than
when it emerged from its egg. Wow!
Metamorphosis

Because they grow bigger
8. 8
What will be the next stage?
The third stage, once fully
grown, the caterpillar forms itself into
a “pupa” or chrysalis – a kind of
vessel in which the caterpillar
changes into a butterfly. They usually
do this on twigs or safe, hidden areas
around the host plant. The “pupa”
stage may last a few weeks to several
months depending on the species.
During this time, a hardened case
forms around the pupa to protect it
from predators and extreme weather
conditions.
If they are not hardened do you
think it would be safe for them?
Very good that’s why they are
well camouflaged for them to be
protected from the predators.
And inside, the caterpillar
transforms what would be the result?
A wonderful winged butterfly!
And the last stage, once the
butterfly is ready to emerge, the case
around the pupa splits open. But it’s
not time for takeoff just yet, as the
wings are at first wet, soft and
wrinkled against its body. The
butterfly waits for its wings to dry,
once fit for flight, this brilliant bug
then takes to the air in search for
flowers to feed on and for other
butterflies to mate with. And that’s
the cycle complete – and ready to start
all over again!
Caterpillar
No, teacher because some animals will
eat them.
A beautiful butterfly.
9. 9
The life cycle of a butterfly is
really amazing right?
Who can give the four stages of
butterfly?
Yes, Sharima?
Great!
Do you have any questions?
E. Application
This time I will the detached the
name of the stages and you will
identify it. Is it clear?
Your doing great class!
F. Generalization
Insects undergo changes in life
this is called metamorphosis.
Metamorphosis has two kinds the
complete and incomplete
metamorphosis. Complete
metamorphosis has 4 stages: the
egg, larva, pupa and adult stag.
Examples of this are butterfly,
beetles, etc. while incomplete
metamorphosis has 3 namely:
egg, nymph and adult it doesn’t
undergo pupa stage.
Do you have any question?
Egg, Caterpillar, Chrysalis or pupa and
adult stage or butterfly!
