Week 2 Homework Hints
Overview
This week the homework is rather more difficult than last week. What is different this week from last week is that most questions require a calculation or the understanding of the formula. That said most of the questions are straight forward. There are a few tricky ones though!
These questions deal with:
Days receivable
Fixed Asset Turnover ratio
P/E ratio, EPS and Stock price computation
Alternative Financing Needed (AFN)
Contribution margin
Days receivable ratio
(aka Days Sales Outstanding)
This ratio considers the frequency with which the company collects on its outstanding Credit Sales in terms of number of days. There are two parts to this calculation: Accounts Receivable (A/R) Turnover, and then the Days Receivable.
Step 1:
A/R Turnover = Credit Sales ÷ Average A/R
A/R turnover represents the number of times the A/R is collected in a year.
Step 2:
Days Sales = 365 days ÷ A/R turnover
Days Sales Outstanding takes the A/R turnover and restates it into the number of days.
Fixed Asset Turnover ratio
This ratio helps analysts determine how efficiently a company uses its fixed assets to generate income.
Fixed assets are things like buildings, equipment, land, etc. They are long-term assets that benefit the company for more than one year. Fixed assets re sometimes called PP&E which stands for property, plant and equipment.
Fixed Asset TO = Net sales ÷ Net PP&E
The “Net” is important in the denominator because it means that the total value of the PP&E must be adjusted for depreciation.
P/E ratio and stock price
(questions #12 & 13)
The Price to Earnings ratio tells us the ratio of a company’s stock price to its per share of earnings (EPS).
EPS is the portion of Net Income that is available for each share of outstanding common stock.
EPS = (Net Income – Dividends) ÷ # of shares outstanding
and
P/E ratio = stock price / EPS
If we know the P/E ratio and the EPS, we can determine the stock price:
Stock price = P/E ratio x EPS
Additional Funds Needed (AFN)
question #14
When a company is forecasting its revenue and needs into the future, it usually creates Pro Forma financial statements. These statements take the goals and expectations that the company has and turns them into dollar amounts on financial statements. If a company expects to grow at a certain rate, and have costs that are a certain amount, it must be able to predict if it can pay for all of its needs. In many cases it cannot and it must seek external financing. We can compute how much external financing is need by simply making sure that the Balance Sheet balances. Remember, Assets = Liabilities + Equity.
So, if we know the net income, the projected increase in assets and projected liabilities plus the retention ratio, we can compute the amount of Additional Funds Needed. The retention ratio is the ratio of the net income that the company keeps and does not pay out as.

Assignment Overview
Before starting on this assignment, make sure to thoroughly review the required background materials. This assignment will require you to use the various discounted cash flow methods and dividend models to make computations. In addition to knowing the computational steps involved in stock and bond valuation, make sure you also understand the basic concepts.
Submit your answers as a Word document. Make sure to show your work for all quantitative questions, and make sure to fully explain your answers using references to the background readings for any conceptual questions. Questions 1 and 3 will require Excel, so submit an Excel file that shows your computational steps as a separate file in addition to your Word file. Question 4 is purely conceptual, no computations are necessary but make sure to apply and reference concepts from the required readings in your answers to each of the scenarios.
Case Assignment
1. Suppose you buy a bond that will pay $1000 in ten years along with an annual coupon payment of $50 and the interest rate is 4%. Answer the following questions:
A. What is the value of this bond?
B. Now suppose the bond has no coupon payments (it is a “zero coupon” bond) but still pays $1000 in ten years. What is the value of this bond?
C. What would happen to the value of the bond if the inflation rate unexpectedly goes up? What the bond value increase or decrease?
D. Now suppose the bond still pays an annual coupon of $50 but the interest rate drops to 2%. What is the new value of this bond?
2. The XYZ Corporation pays a dividend of $1 for each share and its required rate of return is 8%. Answer the following questions:
A. Assuming zero growth in dividends, what is the value of each share?
B. Now assume a 4% annual growth rate in the dividend paid. What is the value of each share?
C. Assume the growth rate is still 4%, but the required rate of return drops to 6%. What is the new value of each share?
3. Acme Medical Corp. is expecting the cash flows from 2018-2022 in the table below. After 2022 it is expecting growth in cash flow at an annual rate of 3%. The firm has determined that its weighted average cost of capital (discount rate) is 7%. Using the table below calculate the following:
A. What is the present value of Acme’s future cash flows using the discounted cash flow model?
B. If the firm has 200,000 common shares outstanding, zero preferred shares, and debt with a market value of $10,000,000 what would be the value of each share?
C. Now suppose the discount rate increases to 10%. How would your answers to a) and b) above change based on the new discount rate?

Assignment
You have recently attended a workshop aimed at improving your understanding of company Annual Reports using Tesco’s report as an example.
During the workshop you looked at the following sections of Tesco’s annual report:
· The Strategic Report including the Environmental and Social Review,
· The Corporate Governance Report and,
· The Group Statements of: ‘Income’ (also sometimes referred to as the Statement of Profit and Loss) ‘Balance Sheet’ and ‘Cash-Flows’.
You learned about how different ‘stakeholders’ may use the information contained in these reports and financial statements. You also learned about financial ratios and how these can be used to interpret and assess the performance of a business in terms of its profitability, liquidity, efficiency and return to investors.
The timing of the workshop was very fortuitous. You are the Purchasing Manager for the business you work for. You are in the process of letting a contract for the supply of an important component used in your business’s production. You have been provided with the financial statements of Benedict Co. who are one of a few companies tendering for the contract. FIN 340 Final Project Scenarios and Tables
You will use these scenarios and tables to complete the final project.
Client 1:
Ezra, age 26, is single. However, he is dating and preparing to get engaged. He will need roughly $5,000 for an engagement ring almost immediately, and expects
he will need $10,000–$15,000 for the wedding in the next 12–24 months. He is currently employed and earns about $70,000 a year in salary. This salary is
enough to cover all his taxes and normal living expenses of approximately $4,800. This leaves him with about $1,000 in savings each month ($350 to 401K, $650
to savings). He has been able to save roughly $15,000 to date in a 401K plan from work and about $20,000 in cash savings. His 401K plan has been invested 100%
in the stock market, including some sector-specific funds. His other savings have been in interest-bearing savings and cash substitutes such as money market
funds. He recently received a windfall of $60,000, and this prompted him to come to you for some advice. The following are few of Ezra’s comments to help
guide your thoughts:
1. “I understand I am young, so I need to take on as much risk as I can.”
2. “I am willing to lose 30–40% on my invested capital if the return is commensurate.”
3. “I do like to have a decent sized cushion in the bank in case something happens at my job.”
4. “I don’t foresee my risk tolerance changing after I get married.”
5. “Do you have any good stock tips?”
Client 2:
Jacob and Rachel, 53 and 52 respectively, are married with four children. Two of the children are currently in college, and two are in high school. They expect the
other two children to attend college. The couple has done relatively well for themselves and earn roughly $275,000 before tax between the two of them, which
equates to $190,000 after taxes. They live well below their means, and this should allow them to cover all of their children’s college expenses out of pocket, but
it will not leave much for them to save over the next six to eight years. Through savings and portfolio growth, they have managed to accumulate $900,000. To
this point, they have been moderately aggressive (70–75% equities) with their portfolio, but they feel that they need to begin preparing the portfolio for partial
retirement in eight years, and full retirement in 13 years.
1. “I know we still need to be somewhat aggressive—we could live until we’re 90—so we need to plan for some growth even in retirement.”
2. “We definitely can’t afford to take a big hit in our portfolio. We don’t have enough time to recover.”
3. “Our jobs allow us to work part-time in retirement, and we will probably do so as long as we are able.”
4. “What do bond yields look like today?”
5. “I think we’ll need to draw on 3–5% of our portfolio in retirement. We’d like to earn enough income from the portfolio to cover that.”

unit 9 discussion scenario 3
COLLAPSE
ABA Procedure: A DRO (differential reinforcement of other behavior) to address SIB exhibited by a toddler in a home setting.
Special Methods: Any appropriate behaviors other than SIB will be reinforced through a specific amount of time (every five minutes). Reinforcement is only given when the individual does not engage in SIB behaviors.
Risks
Notes
1 Implementing the plan at home can be difficult.
1 The family might be concerned with their safety and the safety of the child. There should be a protocol before implementing this intervention.
2 Family members and client could be at risk for danger.
2 The parents might be concerned for the safety of themselves and their child.
3 Possible increase in SIB
3 SIB behaviors might increase before it decreases due to an extinction burst. The behavior analyst should have a protocol before implementing this intervention.
4 SIB behaviors could remain the same.
4 If there is no change in the clients SIB behaviors then a preference test should be conducted to determine motivating reinfoncers.
Benefits
Notes
1 Generalization
1 The client will learn to use this skill at home as well as be able generalize this skill into other settings.
2 Improved learning environment
2 SIB behaviors will decrease and appropriate behavior will be taught. SIB will no longer impact the client and family in the future.
3 Increase in appropriate behaviors
3 Appropriate behaviors will be taught and replace the SIB behavior.
4 Least intrusive intervention
4 Using reinforcement to decrease the problem behavior and increase appropriate behaviors. This is a least restrictive method of treatment.
5 Parent training and involvement
5 Parents will feel confident about implementing this evidence based treatment at home. This will can lead to an increase a buy in from the family and they will feel comfortable implementing other interventions in the future.
Summary: DRO is an intervention that is used when the client does not engage in the problem behavior (SIB) (Bailey & Burch, 2016). Reinforcement should only be given to the individual after a certain amount of time that the client is not engaging in the problem behavior; in this case it should be after five minutes of the client not engaging in SIB. The person who is implementing this treatment should not reinforce the problem behavior. The benefits of implementing DRO outweigh the risks of implementing DRO. DRO is a good intervention to use when decreasing SIB behavior. Although there are some risks, the individual who is implementing DRO should have the knowledge, training and experience and be confident when implementing DRO ( Bailey & Burch, 2016).

Assignment: Capital Budget Decision Making for an Organization—Part 2
Note: In Week 6, you submitted Part 1 of the Module 3 Assignment.
You will complete and submit Part 2 this week. Next week, you will complete and submit Part 3 and the executive summary.
As a reminder, you will continue to play the role of a consultant who has been hired by a mid-sized company that recently went public to provide some recommendations related to their short-term and long-term financial needs. Your first project is to analyze the short- and long-term capital budget needs of the company. You will prepare and submit a 3- to 5-page report, including an executive summary in which you synthesize your recommendations for the following fiscal year, along with the provided Excel spreadsheet with your calculations. Explain your findings and your recommendations.
For each of the items in your report, you will complete the calculations in the Module 3 Assignment Part 1 Template and will then use that financial information to develop your report to the owner using the Module 3 Assignment Part 2 Template. In your report, be sure to include relevant citations from the Learning Resources, the Walden Library, and/or other appropriate academic sources to support your work.
To prepare for this Assignment:
· Return to the Module 3 Assignment Part 1 Template to continue completing the calculations.

Market Return 9%
Risk-free Rate 0.75%

A student is bullying their peers by teasing, joking, and targeting students who appear less socially adept. The bullying goes beyond friendly banter and often leaves victims feeling hurt and ashamed. As a new teacher, steps should be taken to stop the bullying and build the self-esteem of targeted students. The causes of the bullying behavior need to be addressed, and a tiered behavior management program could help encourage student success.

unit 9 discussion scenario 3

1- I can totally see where there would be tension between.docxjasoninnes20
1- I can totally see where there would be tension between these two, especially in today’s world. I am no expert on religion or science for that matter, but I do feel like some of the tension is unnecessary. I feel that the two can work to benefit our patients by balancing them with the needs of the patient. Let’s take my kids for instance, if they were sick with some known treatable disease there would be no other option in my mind to treat them with science and medicine that has been proven to work. I wouldn’t only pray for them to get better and not do anything about it, but I would pray for them and do whatever was necessary to help my family deal with the stress and worry of a child being sick. Here we have used them both to our benefit and they each serve a different purpose and effectiveness. Thanks again for your post!
2-My perception of the tension between science and religion is founded at first glance and then not when looked at more closely. Science and religion can coincide in health care if respected for their own strengths and limitations. I feel that a healthy balance of both can benefit our patients providing different needs when they’re needed. I have seen with my own eyes CRP markers drop in an infant receiving antibiotic treatment and I have also seen an infant that wasn’t supposed to live by scientific probability actually make it and thrive with prayer being the only obvious intervention. So, trying to single out one over the other as more effective than the other seems less beneficial than trying to work them both in when the patient requires such help.
I feel that science is good for some of the more usual cases and things we feel we can help with its information, and I also feel that we can use religion to help a patient with their mental aspects of healing. We can quantify an improvement in a patient through lab levels and such, but it's hard to do the same with religion and how a patient uses that tool as comfort or however they use it in their lives. “Some observational studies suggest that people who have regular spiritual practices tend to live longer. Another study points to a possible mechanism: interleukin (IL)-6. Increased levels of IL-6 are associated with an increased incidence of disease. A research study involving 1700 older adults showed that those who attended church were half as likely to have elevated levels of IL-6. The authors hypothesized that religious commitment may improve stress control by offering better coping mechanisms, richer social support, and the strength of personal values and worldview” (NCBI, 2001). In this example we see the benefits were surveyed to be founded, but the exact workings aren’t exactly known. The great thing about science is that usually we have some tangible results that are repeatable and there’s safety to be found in that. The great thing about religion is that we can have faith in whatever we believe in and that’s all that’s needed. It's our.

Bible Readings for Module/Week 3
Hope
As with faith, the reasons for hope are found in the object. Hope
in hope is futile. Hope in God is hope properly placed.
But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:7)
We wait in hope for the LORD;
he is our help and our shield. (Psalm 33:20)
Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead
and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. (I
peter 1:21)
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in
me [Jesus].” (John 14:1)
The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD;
he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.
(Proverbs 21:1)
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed,
16. but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down,
but not destroyed. (II Corinthians 4:8-9)
Leadership
Beware of Evil or False Leaders
But he answered and said, every plant, which my heavenly
Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they
be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind,
both shall fall into the ditch. (Matthew 15:13–14)
A Biblical Model of Leadership
Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who
are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and
their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with
you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must
be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of
all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to
serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10: 42–
45)
Ethics
True Ethics Are Grounded in the Nature and Character of God
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is,
and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." (Revelation
1:8)
Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain. (Psalm 127:1)
For verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or
one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least
commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the
17. least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and
teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of
heaven. (Matthew 5:18–19)
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question:
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"
Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and
with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and
greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your
neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on
these two commandments." (Matthew 22:35–40)
History
Understanding History Teaches Us in the Present
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach
us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the
Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 15:4)
These things happened to them as examples and were written
down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages
has come. (I Corinthians 10:11)
The Means
For the End to be Right, the Means Must be Right
"'Do not use dishonest standards when measuring length, weight
or quantity. Use honest scales and honest weights, an honest
ephah and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought
you out of Egypt.” (Leviticus 19:35–36)
For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure
motives, nor are we trying to trick you. On the contrary, we
speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.
We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.
(I Thessalonians 2:3–4)
18. Two Examples of the Means to an End Being Wrong in Israel’s
History
But Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of sheep in my
ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?"
Saul answered, "The soldiers brought them from the
Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to
sacrifice to the LORD your God, but we totally destroyed the
rest."
"Stop!" Samuel said to Saul. "Let me tell you what the LORD
said to me last night."
"Tell me," Saul replied.
Samuel said, "Although you were once small in your own eyes,
did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD
anointed you king over Israel. And he sent you on a mission,
saying, 'Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the
Amalekites; make war on them until you have wiped them out.'
Why did you not obey the LORD ? Why did you pounce on the
plunder and do evil in the eyes of the LORD ?"
"But I did obey the LORD," Saul said. "I went on the mission
the LORD assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites
and brought back Agag their king. The soldiers took sheep and
cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in
order to sacrifice them to the LORD your God at Gilgal."
But Samuel replied:
"Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
he has rejected you as king." (I Samuel 15–23)
At that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said
to him: "Because you relied on the king of Aram and not on the
LORD your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped
19. from your hand. Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty
army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when
you relied on the LORD, he delivered them into your hand. For
the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen
those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a
foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war." (II
Chronicles 16:7–9)
Coercion
Biblically, the use of coercion is legitimate in the hands of
government. God has delegated this authority to government to
punish evildoers.
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for
there is no authority except that which God has established. The
authorities that exist have been established by God.
Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling
against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring
judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who
do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free
from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he
will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But
if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for
nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring
punishment on the wrongdoer. (Romans 13:1–4)
Manipulation
"It's no good, it's no good!" says the buyer;
then off he goes and boasts about his purchase. (Proverbs
20:14)
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy
Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of
God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I
leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare
the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and
20. distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So
be on your guard! (Acts 20:28–31)
Persuasion
Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,
and a gentle tongue can break a bone. (Proverbs 25:15)
Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to
persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also
plain to your conscience. (II Corinthians 5:11)
Every Sabbath he [Paul] reasoned in the synagogue, trying to
persuade Jews and Greeks. (Acts 18:4)
Then Agrippa said to Paul, "Do you think that in such a short
time you can persuade me to be a Christian?" (Acts 26:28)
Illustration of Paul Persuading Philemon Rather Than Forcing
Him to Comply
Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to
do what you ought to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of
love. I then, as Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of
Christ Jesus—I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who
became my son while I was in chains. Formerly he was useless
to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.
I am sending him—who is my very heart—back to you. I would
have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place
in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel. But I did not
want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you
do will be spontaneous and not forced. Perhaps the reason he
was separated from you for a little while was that you might
have him back for good—no longer as a slave, but better than a
slave, as a dear brother. He is very dear to me but even dearer
to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. (Philemon 8–
16)
21. Power
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in
your power to act. (Proverbs 3:27)
A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases
strength; (Proverbs 24:5)
Wisdom makes one wise man more powerful than ten rulers in a
city. (Ecclesiastes 7:19)
I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God
for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew,
then for the Gentile. (Romans 1:16)
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are
perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
(I Corinthians 1:18)
Planning
Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they
succeed. (Proverbs 15:22)
Many are the plans in a man's heart,
but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)
Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit
down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to
complete it? (Luke 14:28)
Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this
or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make
money." Why, you do not even know what will happen
tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a
little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is
the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you
22. boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. (James 4: 13–16)
Deciding
For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make
victory sure. (Proverbs 11:14)
For waging war you need guidance, and for victory many
advisers. (Proverbs 24:6)
Communicating
Above all else, guard your heart,
for it is the wellspring of life.
Put away perversity from your mouth;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips. (Proverbs 4:23–24)
Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes
great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a
small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the
parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole
course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. (James
3:5–6)
Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but
only what is helpful for building others up according to their
needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29)
Growth
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it.
But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining
toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the
prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
(Philippians 3:13–14)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a
workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly
23. handles the word of truth. (II Timothy 2:15)
Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy,
envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave
pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your
salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. (I
Peter 2:1–3)
Statesmanship
Statesmanship is best illustrated by actions—The charge to
Queen Esther, the actions of King Hezekiah and King Josiah
[The charge to Queen Esther:] For if you remain silent at this
time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another
place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who
knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time
as this?" (Esther 4:14)
[King Hezekiah’s statesmanship] In the third year of Hoshea
son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah
began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became
king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His
mother's name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what
was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had
done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones
and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the
bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites
had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.)
Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. There was no
one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or
after him. He held fast to the LORD and did not cease to follow
him; he kept the commands the LORD had given Moses. And
the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he
undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not
serve him. From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the
Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory. (II Kings 18:1–8)
24. [King Josiah’s statesmanship]
Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and
Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the LORD with the men
of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the priests and the
prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read
in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant,
which had been found in the temple of the LORD. The king
stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of
the LORD -to follow the LORD and keep his commands,
regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus
confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then
all the people pledged themselves to the covenant.
Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the
household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things
seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the
requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the
priest had discovered in the temple of the LORD. Neither
before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to
the LORD as he did—with all his heart and with all his soul and
with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.
(II Kings 23: 1–3; 24–25)
Distinction/Distinguished
Do you see a man skilled in his work?
He will serve before kings;
he will not serve before obscure men. (Proverbs 22:29)
[A Distinguishes Memorial for David:] And the time that he
reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in
Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honor:
and Solomon his son reigned in his stead. (I Chronicles 29:27–
28)
Illustration of distinction: King David’s Mighty Men
25. These are the names of David's mighty men:
Josheb-Basshebeth, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three;
he raised his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed
in one encounter.
Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of
the three mighty men, he was with David when they taunted the
Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the men of
Israel retreated, but he stood his ground and struck down the
Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The
LORD brought about a great victory that day. The troops
returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.
Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the
Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field
full of lentils, Israel's troops fled from them. But Shammah took
his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck
the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great
victory.
During harvest time, three of the thirty chief men came down to
David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. At that time David was in
the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.
David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get
me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!"
So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines,
drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried
it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it
out before the LORD. "Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!"
he said. "Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their
lives?" And David would not drink it.
Such were the exploits of the three mighty men. (II Samuel
23:8–17)
Illustration of Distinction from the Hall of Faith (Hebrews 11)
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about
Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the
26. prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered
justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of
lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of
the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who
became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women
received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were
tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a
better resurrection. Some faced jeers and flogging, while still
others were chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they
were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They
went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted
and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them. They
wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in
the ground.
These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them
received what had been promised. God had planned something
better for us so that only together with us would they be made
perfect. (Hebrews 11:32–40)
