Built Upon
The Rock
By: Janice M. Payoyo
Let it be clear that I do not impose my faith on
anyone, especially on my clients. But I just want
to share these bits and pieces of wisdom about
the dynamics between God, life and finances.
I made this primarily because through years of
counselling people about money, I often catch
myself saying this: “Kung ma-realize mo lang
kung gaano kalaki yung financial requirement
just to meet needs (iba pa yung comfortable life
with luxuries), mapapadasal ka talaga”.
Thus, when I started as an agent at age 23, I hardly new anything about money. I even
tended to instill fear in my clients. But now, I just say, we will just settle what we can
settle , and work on your finances little by little. And in between you trust that God
will provide, as he has for me. And remember that you have to do your part.
Though all those years of financial hardships, these things that I have kept me sane
and strong. These things that I am to share is my basis for believing that I am
destined to live a meaningful, abundant and fruitful life. All these I can do ONLY with
the help of God and His guidance. To God be all the glory for all that I will be able to
accomplish in my lifetime =)
When things are A-okay…
all structures stand with its Magnificence…
But when the storms in life come…
Every structure will be tested by its
FOUNDATION.
Three Questions
• How can I be
secure?
• How can I be
certain that I have
a bright future?
• How can I find
lasting happiness?
Money is a poor foundation for
personal security.
No matter how much money you have
saved…
• It can be wiped out instantly by an illness, job loss,
losses in your business and other catastrophes.
• It cannot guarantee that throughout your lifetime, it
can enable you to get all your needs and wants.
• It does not guarantee happiness and a problem–free
life.
• More money can make your life, especially your
relationships more complicated.
• BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO SAVE AND PLAN YOUR
FINANCES. YOU JUST DON’T MAKE MONEY THE
FOUNDATION OF YOUR SECURITY.
I will not trust
in money and
all I can do for
my hopes for
my future.
But I will build on my life on
God’s promises as revealed
in His Word.
Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know
the plans that I have for you,
declares the Lord, plans to
prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope
and a future.
God will SURELY provide because He
has a plan…
PSALM 139 :15-16
My frame was not hidden from you when I
was made in the secret place. When I was
woven together in the depths of the earth,
your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written
in your book before one of them came to
be.
God will not be able to accomplish His plans
through our lives if He will not provide.
Before we were born, He already paved the
way for provisions throughout our lifetime.
BUT WE DO OUR PART AS WE WORK IN
PARTNERSHIP WITH GOD
Seek First His Kingdom….
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your
life, what you will eat or drink; or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more than
food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look
at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap
or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly
Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by
worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do
not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was
dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is
here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe
you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What
shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things,
and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom
and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore
do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.
Seasons of Poverty and Hardships
The Israelites spent 40 years in the desert.
Exodus 13: 21 – By day, the Lord went
ahead of them in a pillar of cloud and to
guide them on their way and by night in a
pillar of fire to give them light.
Deuteronomy 9: 2-5
Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty
years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether
or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger
and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had
known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word
that comes from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your
feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man
disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
Our Relationship with God is more
important than the Promised Land…
The Lord never said in the Bible,
“Hurry up, the Promised Land is so
nice!”
Instead, He would often say this:
Exodus 10:1-2
I have hardened the heart of
Pharaoh so that I may perform these
miraculous signs of mine among
them that you may tell your children
and grandchildren how harshly I
dealt with the Egyptians and how I
performed my signs among them,
AND THAT YOU MAY KNOW THAT I
AM THE LORD.
Deuteronomy 19: 5
If you obey me fully and keep my
covenant, then out of all the nations,
YOU WILL BE MY TREASURED
POSSESSIONS…
Deuteronomy 7: 7-9
The Lord did not set His affection on
you and chose you because you were
numerous than other people, for you
were the fewest…But it was because
the Lord loved you and kept the oath
he swore to your forefathers…Know
therefore that the Lord is a faithful
God keeping his covenant of love to a
thousand generations of those who
love him and keep his commands.
Moses, the leader of the Israelites did
not even enter the Promised Land,
BUT…
Lord, hanggang kelan ko ito gagawin?
Moses knew God face to face.
Deuteronomy 34
Before Moses died, God led him to a
mountaintop and showed him the
Promised Land. It was as if God was
telling him that He has the welfare of the
Israelites in his hands and that He is true
to His promises.
The last verses of Deuternomy says:
“Since then, no prophet has risen in
Israel like Moses whom the Lord knew
face to face, who did all those miraculous
signs and wonders the Lord sent him to
do in Egypt---to the Pharoah and to all his
officials, and to his whole land. For no
one has ever shown the mighty power or
performed the awesome deeds that
Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
On Top of the World
We hear of stories of the
rich and famous
committing suicide. They
are also into vices like
drugs. Their children even
go astray.
WHERE IS GOD IN ALL
THIS MADNESS?
Several years ago, my dream of climbing Mt. Apo came true. IT WAS SURREAL!!!
But when I came back, I wrote this on my then Friendster page:
I’ve been through so many mountaintops and thought that being there is the epitome
of joy. For a while, I can be away from all my problems.
But lately I found a greater joy, BEING AT SEA LEVEL WITH THE LORD. He never
promised a problem free life, but He promised that He will never leave us nor forsake
us.
(From my favorite song,
Top of the World by The
Carpenters)
It’s the Love that I’ve
found ever since You’ve
been around.
YOUR LOVE HAS PUT ME
ON TOP OF THE WORLD
The Wisdom of Solomon
The Lord asked Solomon to ask for whatever
he wants and it will be given. Solomon asked
for Wisdom. Thus, the Lord was pleased
with what he asked for, and gave him also
what he didn’t ask for---both riches and
honor.
For more of the following insights , read the
book “ What am I Living for? By Ed Lapiz.
Ecclesiastes 2: 4-11 (Exceprts)
I undertook great projects …I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in
Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of
kings and provinces. ..I denied myself nothing my eyes desired ; refused my
heart of no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the
reward for all my labor. Yet when I surveyed all that may hands had done, and
what I toiled to achieve, everything is meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.
Toil is Meaningless
Ecclesiastes 2: 18 – 19
I hated all the things I had toiled
for under the sun, because I must
leave them to the one who
comes after me. And who knows
whether he will be a wise man or
a fool? Yet he will have control
over all the work into which I
have poured my effort and skill
under the sun. This too is
meaningless.
Enjoy Your Work and the Fruits of
Your Labor
Ecclesiastes 5: 19-20
When God gives any man
wealth and possessions, and
enables him to enjoy them,
to accept his lot and be
happy in his work---this is a
gift of God. He seldom
reflects on the days of his life,
because God keeps him
occupied with gladness of
heart.
In His Time…
Ecclesiastes 3: 11 -14
He has made everything beautiful in
His time. He has also set eternity in
the hearts of men; yet they cannot
fathom what God has done from
beginning to end. I know that there
is nothing better for men than to be
happy and do good while they live.
That everybody may eat and drink
and find satisfaction in all his toil---
this is the gift of God. I know that
everything God does will endure
forever; nothing can be added to it
and nothing taken from it. God does
it so that men will revere him.
Sabi ni Lord,
yayaman
ako!!!
The more important
question is WHY GOD
WANTS TO PROSPER
YOU.
As the Lord blesses
you, the more you
have to seek a
relationship with the
Lord. Otherwise, your
wealth can destroy
you.
100% Security must be based on an
ABSOLUTE
Money, Abilities and People can fail
you.
I will put my trust in an
unchangeable God.
The more I know about God and His
promises, the more I trust God and
what He says in His word.
Always remember that you also
have to do your part and obey God.
