X-WORKS R&D
• X-Works R&D / NPD is focused on Horizons 2 and 3
• medium- to long-term radical breakthroughs
• new technologies, new products, new services, new customer experiences, and new business models
• X-Works R&D teams are often housed separately from mainstream Roadmap R&D teams
• sometimes in dedicated Innovation Labs - organic aesthetic - User Research, Design Research, and
human-centered business prototyping labs
• Each of these provides for a particular type of innovation pursuit.
• • Continuous Improvement – often produces sustaining innovations, mostly around processes.
• • Centers of Excellence – facilitates adoption of new technologies and methods, for technical innovations.
• • Research & Development – develops major new technologies and platforms of offerings, often providing the
impetus for delivering new breakthrough innovations.
• • New Product Development – actually develops and evolves offerings with an eye on gradually evolving market
needs and technology enablers (mostly H1 incremental innovation).
• • X-Works – Pursues highly advanced research and development aimed at breakthrough and disruptive
innovations for Horizon 2 and Horizon 3.
• • Partner Development Center – facilitates partnerships with outside partners to create new innovations beyond
what the core organization is capable of, mostly for the sake of Horizon 2 breakthroughs.
• • Corporate Development / Venturing – facilitates the investment in new ventures, largely for the sake of Horizon 3
disruptive innovations
• • Corporate Strategy – facilitates the M&A activity to extend the innovation capability of the enterprise.
