 Three Tips and Three Challenges

What is
confidence?
1982 2012
The only way to
build confidence
is to get out of
your comfort
zone
Confidence is
both mental and
physical
Follow these tips
for building
confidence as a
speaker
1. Always be prepared
Know your audience, objective and
message
Practice, practice, practice
Be prepared for mishaps
2. Embrace your uniqueness and
imperfections
Focus on connection and giving
value
Imagine your success using
visualization and positive self-talk
Check your posture, body language
and eye contact
3. Never apologize
So what if you’re inexperienced?
Everyone starts somewhere.
So what if you’re nervous? Everyone
gets nervous.
So what if you make a mistake?
Everyone makes mistakes.
Here are three challenges to build
your confidence muscles
1. Make eye contact
Hint: Smile
If that’s easy, make eye contact and
make a comment

                 Your dog is
                   cute.
If that’s easy, make a comment or
ask a question

              Your dog is cute.
                What’s her
                  name?
2. Be present
In class, give the teacher your full
attention
When you're in a conversation, listen
and hear what the other is saying
Listen and hear what you're saying

       Hello?
      Hello?
   Is anybody
    listening?
3. Speak up
Remember your courage
Plan ahead to ask a question or
make a comment

    1. Ask a question

    2. Make a
            e t
     c o m mn ne a n d
     3. Ri s
      repeat
Make opportunities to speak
If you don’t have
opportunities to
speak, make them
You don't have to
be confident to
appear confident
Believe in
yourself and your
message, and the
audience will, too
