INTRODUCTION
I. What do you think of when you hear of something that is cute,
adorable, and your heart melts when you look into its eyes?
II. No it’s not a baby, but it’s pretty close. A puppy. According to
my survey, there is one pet allergy in here but Meelo here is
part poodle. What that means according to the
AmericanKennelClub.org, is he contains hypoallergenic hair.
And according to Dictionary.com hypoallergenic is designed to
reduce or minimize the possibility of an allergic reaction. Since
10% of Americans are allergic to dogs, breeds with this type of
hair contain a non-shedding coat, which causes fewer allergies
in humans. Today I will demonstrate to everyone the basic
behavioral/obedience dog commands.
III. After I conducted my survey, it showed that 73% of you have a
dog, but that 23% of you have considered getting one. So if you

have a dog or plan to get one this demonstration will help you
know what to do.
IV. When my family first got my dog 10 years ago, this past May,
we received a disc by dog trainer Brian Donavon on how to
properly train him.
V. For the duration of these next few minutes I will identify to
everyone the difference between behavioral and obedience
commands, and then I will demonstrate them.

BODY
I. If everyone will notice on the handout that I passed out that
Modern Dog Magazine compiled a list of 7 tips on how to keep
your dog “Blissfully Happy” which will come in handy as you
attempt to train your dog.
II. According to DogBreedInfoCenter.com behavioral training
prevents and or corrects bad habits that a puppy or dog may
develop or have already developed.
A. Examples of these behaviors are jumping, car chasing,
climbing on forbidden furniture, chewing, etc.
B. Consistency and communication is key, For example, do not
allow your dog on the couch as a puppy if you do not plan
on allowing this behavior when they are an adult. This will

confuse your dog. With proper communication it can mean a
great deal of difference between success and failure.
III. The other type of training that is described is obedience, which
is training your dog to obey specific commands such as sit,
stay, come, heel, and much more.
A. A tip to allow training sessions to run a little less ruff is
to prepare sessions right before your dogs meal. This will
associate their training with food, thinking of their meal
as a reward.
Transition I’m sure you guys are wondering, “When are we going to see this
cute dog do some cool tricks?”

IV. Now I am going to show you all how to get your dog to
perform a simple obedience command.
A. The first step is to prepare a type of reward for your dog,
regular dog treats or dog food will work but to receive better
results I recommend a deli meat such as turkey or ham.
B. One of the first things you want your dog to do is to look
and pay attention to you, it helps with the food that you’ve
got in your hand. A lot of praise, patience, and a calm tone
all factor in on how your dog reacts and what kind of results
you get.
C. I’ve got his treat in my hand and because my dog knows
several other tricks, he believes that doing any sort of trick
will allow him a treat when that’s not the case. I won’t give
it to him until he stays still and listens to me. Now,

especially for a puppy don’t expect 100% success just after
the first try.
D. Always be sincere when talking to your dog because if you
simply shout commands to them they are less likely to
respond in the correct way.
E. For lie down command you want to say the command to the
dog as you are moving your hand down in front of their face
and then reward them for it if they do it correctly. If they are
on the right path then reward them anyway along with praise
because it gives them a sense of reassurance.
Transition This will now give you some of the basic knowledge of how to give
a dog a basic command.

CONCLUSION
I. Now that we have reviewed the difference between behavioral
and obedience commands and how to give a basic obedience
command, I hope the 19% of you that have a dog that doesn’t
know basic commands can train your dog.
II. Even though the adventure may start out “ruff” at the end
you’ll always have a cute, adorable best friend who’s eyes will
melt your heart.
