• After an initial review of the news release
was missing a lot of information…..
• The HealthNewsReview gave the
University if Maryland a grade of 1/10 on
their scale of satisfactory research and
reporting

What were the ethical violations?
• Data to back claims
• Ethical code violations
• Free flow of information
• disclosure of information
• Lack of reported conflicts of interests

7. So what did the school
do?
….Originally… nothing

8. What internal
investigations uncovered
• School conducted internal investigation led by the president
• Found that
• there conflicts of interests with Allied Milk Foundations
• Proper research protocol was not followed before the release of the press release
marketing a commercial product
• The study was not thoroughly done by researchers or the participants (high school
football players at two separate schools)
• The press release as well as the research was incomplete

9. Recommendations
• Image rebuilding, apologize and give full disclosure in the steps of what's next
• Preventative steps
• Establishing peer review guidelines for all research conducted
• Create channels that encourage peer review publishing before public releases
• Installing an approval system for research to go through
