DOCUMENTARY
BROADCAST
We need to choose a suitable channel to
have our documentary broadcast on.
Channel 4
• A branch of the BBC broadcast company
• Most watched programs appear to be reality TV (i.e. ‘Big
Brother’, ‘My Big fat Gypsy Wedding’)
• They are however known for documentaries, with a popular
‘Dispatchers’ series. Which looks into unknown or dangerous
parts of society in England and the world.
- This channel has a good name for broadcasting documentaries
but the topics are much darker than I feel our documentary is.
- We want to address a teen audience and it is not obvious that
they would be tuning in to this channel.
- As we are using a BBC radio and listings magazine so it would
make sense that we use a BBC channel.
ITV
• One of the largest UK television channels
• They are well known for broadcasting ‘day time television’ (such as;
‘The Jeremy Kyle Show’, ‘Loose Women’,’60 minute makeover’)
• Also they broadcast soaps or ‘prime time television’ (‘Emmerdale’,
‘Coronation Street’)
• They notably broadcast ‘The X factor’ and ‘Ant & Dec’s Saturday night
take away’
- This last point may show that our age group would watch the channel
- But their primary shows genres appear to be ones that would target
an older middle aged/senior audience.
- Also there doesn’t seem to be any interest in documentaries which
means there wouldn’t be a audience for our program.
BBC Three
• The channel is broadcasted by the BBC, meaning that primarily
BBC content is advertised.
• They broadcast popular American shows ‘Family Guy’ and
American Dad!’
• There are also original dramas about teenagers lives. ‘Waterloo
Road’ and ‘Some Girls’ both set in secondary schools.
• There have also been documentary series created about
issues such as LGBTQ issues and mental health. With hosts
‘Reggie Yates’ and ‘Professor Green’.
• They are however moving to a internet only site.
- They focus on young people for their content.
- There are many documentaries broadcasted.
- They are a BBC channel so the related content can be
advertised.
Our Choice
We have decided to broadcast our documentary on BBC Three,
this is because;
• They already create a large amount of content that is targeted
for teenagers, which is good as or target audience is 16-25.
• here are many documentaries already broadcast about similar
topics to us.
• Although they are moving to a internet only platform this will
mean they are investing in new content from new creators,
which is what we are. And our documentary is about the
internet ad its influence, so them being on the internet could be
a true asset.
• The documentary can be advertised on Radio 1 and The Radio
Times as it will all be BBC content.
