This document discusses broadband and its impact on growth and productivity. It summarizes evidence from Cornwall, UK that showed broadband infrastructure investment from 2001-2005 ("actnow") led to significantly higher GDP, employment, and productivity growth compared to the previous period and the rest of the UK. It also notes that broadband enables knowledge-intensive jobs and innovation that can help sustain high employment levels. Finally, it outlines scenarios for broadband's impact on European employment and GDP growth through 2015 and provides policy recommendations to maximize these benefits.
The current study presents the impact of the development of the broadband infrastructure on the economical development. An economic growth of 0.7% can be expected, if a fast broadband infrastructure is consistently built in Germany and the other EU-countries.
This report analyzes the role of information and communications technologies (ICT) in enabling reductions
in greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. It finds that ICT's own emissions are expected to
increase to 1.43 GtCO2 by 2020, but that ICT solutions can enable reductions of up to 7.8 GtCO2, or 15% of
global emissions. Key opportunities for ICT-enabled emissions savings include optimizing motor systems,
implementing smart logistics and transport, making buildings more efficient, and optimizing electricity grids.
The report estimates the economic value of these ICT-enabled emissions reductions at over €600 billion.
This document discusses the European Union's Digital Agenda, which aims to promote an open and competitive digital economy in Europe. It predicts that 90% of growth in the ICT industry from 2013 to 2020 will come from technologies of the "third platform," currently representing only 25% of ICT spending. It also predicts that 80% of competitive energy should focus on strengthening offerings and capabilities in this new platform. Finally, it states that more companies will be "in the cloud" than outside of it, as cloud adoption accelerates.

Advancements in technology have enabled government agencies to improve productivity and performance. This is highlighted through trends like cloud computing and data center consolidation that allow remote access to information. While these increase connectivity, they also grow security risks that require strengthened cybersecurity protocols. The guide also examines how mobile access, open data, and shared services can help agencies innovate with fewer resources. Overall, the integration of new technologies aims to enhance government transparency and services for citizens.
The EU 2020 Growth Strategy aims to tackle pan-European challenges through policy coordination and connecting inclusion objectives to multiple goals. It seeks to build a modern, innovative European knowledge economy by delivering a single digital market via the Digital Agenda. This addresses the widening digital divide and need for accessible, inclusive online services. The strategy focuses on information literacy, skills development, and access/infrastructure issues like connecting remote areas and promoting digital competencies across EU frameworks and funds like the Structural Funds. E-inclusion is presented as a necessity rather than luxury to achieve the strategy's overall aims.

Tropical Storm Lee Impacts Fairfax County: BOS Presentation Dec. 6, 2011Fairfax County
Tropical Storm Lee caused flooding in Fairfax County in September 2011. Several roads and parks were flooded including Reston Park and Ride, Government Center Parkway, streets in Fairfax, Lake Fairfax Park, Lorton Road, Beach Mill Road, Cinderbed Road, Colchester Road, Swinks Mill Road, Hunter Mill Road, Walney Road, and the Colvin Pump Station was impacted. The storm also affected the Huntington community and a community assistance center was opened to help those affected.
If flooding is possible, move immediately to higher ground and avoid areas prone to flash flooding. Prepare to evacuate by securing your home and disconnecting electrical appliances. Do not walk or drive through flood waters as little as six inches can knock you down or cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Seek additional information from the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management.

The document discusses creating a more competitive business environment in Eastern Europe. It identifies three key factors: 1) the strategic geographic location of Eastern Europe, 2) supportive economic policies to stimulate business and entrepreneurship, and 3) networks where companies can exchange information and increase competition. The industries thought to become most competitive are IT, food processing, telecommunications, hospitality/tourism, banking, FMCG, and financial services. Sound economic policies from governments are needed, including reducing corruption, improving legal infrastructure and taxation policies, and providing incentives for entrepreneurs.
The future-of-productivity-peterson-institute-for-international-economics-was...Dr. Stefan Laternser
Productivity growth has slowed in recent decades, driven by a breakdown in the diffusion of innovations from highly productive frontier firms to other firms. Three key factors contributing to this are: 1) a weaker connection between the global productivity frontier and national frontiers, limiting the spread of innovations; 2) misallocation of resources due to skill mismatches and barriers to reallocation; and 3) declining investment in knowledge-based capital. Reviving productivity will require policies to strengthen the innovation engine, improve the diffusion of innovations, and support the reallocation of resources to more productive firms through policies like pro-competition reforms, education and training initiatives, and bankruptcy laws that facilitate exit.

The telecom industry faces significant challenges including decreasing revenues and EBITDA. CEO strategies show similarities around data monetization, partnerships, and vertical expansion. However, operators are constrained by their ability to invest and monetize networks. This has led to a fragmented value chain and the need to rethink business models through options like diversification, changing business models, cost cutting, consolidation, or shareholders stepping down. The online media industry winners have leveraged search, social networks, hardware/software integration, while losers faced challenges in business models and product dependence.

5th Power Grid Model Meet-up
It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
-An interactive brainstorming session to discuss and propose new feature requests.
-An opportunity to connect with fellow Power Grid Model enthusiasts and users.
