Reading & Writing Skills
 What is the Reading ????

 - Decode, decipher, and identify the words in print.
 - Articulate, speak, and pronounce the words in print.
 - Understand, interpret, and sense the meaning of the
 words/texts in print.

 Four important Reading
 Techniques:
 1. SKIMMING – reading quickly to get the gist of the text.
 2. SCANNING – Reading for specific information.
 3. INTENSIVE READING – Approaching the text with the
close guidance of a tutor through the task that forces the
    students to pay attention.
 4. EXTENSIVE READING – Also called reading for fluency
where it involves reading in quantity without bothering to
    check new word or structure.
Reason :
                                              Sub-Vocalization

Reading ability of a common man

                             Don’t’s :
                   1.Stop reading word by word
                2.Stop pronouncing words silently

                             Do’s :
       1. Concentrate on BLOCKs of words rather than single
                              word.
             2. Minimize time spent on each Block
          3. Reduce the frequency of moving your eyes
backwards to cover the previous block

Basic Numeracy
Numeracy is defined as the ability to reason and to
apply simple numerical concept’s. Basic numeracy
skills consist of comprehending fundamental
mathematics like addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division
Few Interesting
Numeracy tips :
                                    Take the original number and
imagine a space between the two

Quick Square 252 = (2x(2+1)) & 25
If you need to square a 2 digit 2x3=6
number ending in 5, you can do so 625
very easily with this trick. Mulitply
the first digit by itself + 1, and put 2943.5 (fractional number (ignore

life. And with change, comes resistance

new one, putting us in a new place and
direction .

Often a very difficult adjustment as we
endure intense feelings of fear, doubt, and
uncertainty

  planning to fail.

             Lack of
           confidence Social
                                                      pressure

      Attaching age,
      caste and sex Fear of
       stereo types change
        to yourself
Proactiveness
There was once a grasshopper who loved life. He spent his
time lazing in the sun, eating when he wanted to, sleeping
when he wanted to, generally enjoying himself all the
time. He lived like he did not have a care in the world.
One day as he was sun-bathing, he saw an ant pushing a
bread crumb across the ground. The grasshopper
asked, "Hey brother! What are you doing?" The ant
replied, "I am gathering food for the winter while the
weather is still warm. Once winter sets in, I am going to
stay home and just eat from my stock of food." The
grasshopper made fun of the ant's dull life and went on
sun bathing saying, "There's enough time for such boring
work. You should take time to have fun like me." Soon the
summer passed and the winter started to set in.As the
weather became colder, it became harder for the
grasshopper to get out. However, he soon started to feel
hungry. He decided to brave the weather and find himself
some food.
When he stepped out, everything was covered with snow
and he could not find anything to eat. He continued to
search for food everyday. He did not find anything.

Efficient Communication
In the information age, we have to send, receive, and process huge
numbers of messages every day. But effective communication is
about more than just exchanging information. Effective
communication requires you to also understand the emotion behind
the information
 GOOD LISTENING FOR EMOTIONAL

                                                       relationship
Give And Get Help
If all of your decisions are based on a closed off view of the world
that revolves around your sole needs, wants, thoughts and
emotions then you can pretty much assume that your energy is
actually closing you off from life, rather than inviting it in.

“selfless effort that we put forth to help someone or teach him or her
something new actually opens our person door to the world around us”

stop looking inward and start sharing outward
amazing things will come to your life because
you are opening yourself up for even more
positive energy to come flowing in.

giving to share, giving to teach or giving to
improve IS THE KEY TO A HAPPY LIFE
Feedback
Feedback may be the single, most useful factor in self-
development. Feedback lets us know whether or not our
behavior, knowledge, skills or communication is
achieving intended outcomes
Avoid generalisations, vague or ambiguous descriptions.
              Offer specific examples
Acknowledge emotional responses, allow ventilation but
              don’t get side tracked.
Critique only actions within a person’s control but
              encourage them to take responsibility
Develop improvement strategies. Ideally, you will elicit
these during the discussion and provide suggestions when
              needed.
Ensure that a plan of action is agreed and follow-up to
              review results
Recognize the value of feedback
Accept your emotions but avoid overreacting and
defer overt responses
Avoid defensive behavior such as
denial, rationalization or blaming others. Excuses
ease the pain but they are also disempowering and
can lead to feelings of victimization and helplessness
Discuss strategies that will enable you to achieve
desired outcomes
Act on your plan and provide feedback about the
results to anyone considerate enough to have
provided input
Remember, someone once said: “There’s no such
thing as mistakes – only learning opportunities”
Managing Conflicts
While conflict is inevitable, it need not ruin your
workday or cause unbearable stress. Try the below
Conflict resolution tips.
 1. Be Specific in formulating your complaints
 2. Resist the temtation to involve yourself in
conflicts that do not directly involve you.
 3. Try to depersonalize conflicts instead of “me vs
you” make it “we vs the problem”
 4. Be open and listen to others problems.
 5. Don’t always involve your superiors in conflict
    resolutions.
 6. Limit your complaints to those directly involved
    in the problem.
 7. Consider a mediator if the problem gets out of
    hand.
 8. Its not always about you, your co-worker might
be having a bad day too

        ASSERTIVENESS

                  EXPRESSING
                   FEELINGS

                          INFLUENCING
                             PEOPLE

                                    STRENGTH
                                    BUILDING
Assertiveness
Assertiveness means standing up for your personal
rights - expressing thoughts, feelings and beliefs in
direct, honest and appropriate ways." It is important
to note also that "By being assertive we should
always respect the thoughts, feelings and beliefs of
other people”

One: Decide what really matters to you

Two: Stop tolerating obstacles to your goals

Three: Ask for what you want

                                    Four: Set personal boundaries

Five: The “Go for it” Mentality
Expressing Feelings
Workplace emotions are very often ignored in the
interests of remaining professional, but keeping your
feelings hidden can only make them worse. When
repressed, feelings can grow and cause more
problems than if they were addressed at the onset,
when they tend to be smaller
      How to Express Feeling????
Identify what feelings are bothering you
                about a situation

Arrange to meet with your coworker for a
                       discussion

Be honest, direct and specific when
                            expressing your feelings
Assess if you are feeling dislike for a coworker. Managing
                                                        Specific
                                                          Emotions…
Recognize your worry and nervousness. Try to
disconnect yourself from the anxiety producing
things in the office such as the office gossips

Recognize if you are feeling frustrated or
irritated. This is usually accompanied by a
            feeling of entrapment

Determine if you are feeling anger. Learn to
recognize your early signs of anger and act to
stop your anger in its early stages

Recognize if you are feeling disappointed in your
job. Assess your attitude towards your work to see if
you can change the way you feel about your job
Influencing People
