This document outlines the approach to evaluating a patient presenting with a breast lump, including taking a thorough history, performing a detailed physical examination of the breast and lump, generating a differential diagnosis, and determining the appropriate investigations and subsequent treatment. The history should inquire about presenting symptoms, duration, and associated complaints. The physical examination inspects and palpates the lump and surrounding breast tissue to characterize the site, size, shape, mobility, and fixation of the lump. Potential causes of the lump include fibrocystic disease, cysts, fibroadenoma, fat necrosis, papilloma, and breast cancer. Further investigations like mammography, ultrasound, biopsy and imaging may be used to arrive at a diagnosis and guide treatment.
