TECHNIQUE OF BREAST FEEDING
Initially ,the mother needs help in breastfeeding
A)POSITION OF MOTHER & BABY:
• Help the mother to get into a comfortable & relax position.
• Sitting and lyingdown.
• Mother should support her breast with her finger .
• Explain the mother ,to hold the baby keeping in mind the points-
Head & body of baby should be straight.
The baby’s nose should be opposite to the neeple.
Baby’s body should be close to her body.
Whole body of baby must be supported.
B)ATTACHMENT OF BABY TO BREAST: After proper positioning,
the cheek is touched with the nipple. Due to rooting reflex,baby
quickly turn his face toword breast and start sucking.
 SIGN OF GOOD ATTACHMENT:
 Baby’s mouth is wide open.
 Baby’s chin touch the breast.
 Baby’s cheek are full not hollow.
 Much of the areola is not visible as in the baby’s mouth.
 SIGN OF BAD/POOR ATTACHMENT:
 Only the nipple is in the baby’s mouth not the areola.
 The baby’s tongue is back inside the mouth.
BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING
BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING TO BABY:
 It is a wholesome food for the baby ,contain all the
nutrient that a baby need is first 6 month of life.
 Low risk of infection
 Protect from allergy
 Emotional bonding
 Economic factors
BENEFITS IF BREASTFEEDING TO MOTHER:
Lactation suppresses ovulation in mother, who give
exclusive breastfeeding to their child are serves as a
natural contraceptives.
Breastfeeding lowers the risk of ovarian & breast
cancer.
Breastfeeding convenient for the mother.
Reduce the chance of PPH.
It helps the mother lose weight that are gain during
pregnancy.
It promotes involution of uterus, thus brings back the
mother in shape after delivery.

BABY-FRIENDLY HOSPITAL INITIATIVE
(BFHI)
BFHI was launched by WHO& UNICEF IN 1991.
It is a joint effort of the WHO& UNICEF to
promote & support breastfeeding as the model
for optimal nutrition. The initiative is a global
effort to implement practices that protect,
promote,and support breastfeeding.
In December,1991 the UNICEF had
promoted the concept of baby
friendly hospital initiative&
awarded recognition to the
hospital; ls that followed the 10
steps of successful breastfeeding.
10 steps to successful breast feeding
1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.
2. Train all health care staff in skills, necessary to implement this policy.
3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits & management of breastfeeding.
4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a halfhour of birth.
5. Show mothers how to breast feed & how to maintain lactation even if they are separated
from their infant.
6. Give newborn infant no need or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated.
7. Practice rooming-in—allow mother & infant to remain together .
8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infant.
10.Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support group& refer mothers to them on
discharge from than hospital .

Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a halfhour of birth. 5. Show mothers how to breast feed & how to maintain lactation even if they are separated from their infant. 6. Give newborn infant no need or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated. 7. Practice rooming-in—allow mother & infant to remain together . 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers to breastfeeding infant. 10.Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support group& refer mothers to them on discharge from than hospital .
