2. GIVES YOU HELL – ALL AMERICAN
REJECTS
Storyline: an average teenager is being followed around by his "conscience", the audience is
aware that someone is following him but may not understand that it is his conscience until the later
half of the music video. The teenager performs day to day activities such as going to sixth
form/college and hanging out at different places after school like a bowling alley or a park. The
song assumes that the conscience is giving the main character 'hell' and is constantly a burden
upon him, he is unable to complete his day to day activities because he is always being distracted
or his conscience is getting the better of him.
Some of the scenes that the conscience will give ‘hell’ are the teenager trying to do his homework
on the computer, he may finish his homework and when he is about to click save his conscience
will exit his work. Another will be the teenager attempting to sit down in a park but instead is
pushed over by his conscience and gets muddy. The audience will most likely understand what is
happening after the second or third ‘hell’ scene because people around him won’t know what is
happening and consciences are usually shown as someone that only the main character can see.
3. COSTUMES
Main character: Possibly a school costume which will include a white
shirt, tie, blazer, black trousers and black shoes with a a school bag. If
we don't go down the school route then he will be dressed in every day
clothes which will most likely be a top, trousers, trainers and coat.
Conscience: Red blazer, black shirt, black bow tie, black top hat, black or
silver cane; the outfit is similar to Panic at the disco's costume design in
"I write sins not tragedies”
4. LOCATION
High school: the high school will be the main focus of the music video in
the first half, we are beginning to find out who the main character is. The
first conscience scene is in a high school with the conscience turning off
a computer.
Park: the main character will walk through a park to go home, he will be
tripped over and will get all muddy because of his conscience.
High street: the conscience won’t leave him, when he walks past a
couple holding a drink his conscience will hit their drink so it falls on the
floor. The couple will think that it is the main character, getting him into
trouble.
Home: the main character will think that he is safe in his own home, but
he is still getting trouble from his conscience. At the end of the music
video he will get rid of his conscience’s wicked ways.
5. A SIMILAR IDEA
Another idea that my group had was that instead of having his conscience
following him around, it is someone annoying the main character throughout
the day as he tries to live his life. The guy is literally giving the main
character "Hell" and could represent how day to day things don't always go
to plan. People are able to see the character give him hell, we believe this
would give the music video a better comedic effect and also viewers will be
able to understand the meaning of the music video better.
The costumes and locations will remain the same, we think that the
conscience outfit would fit great in this music video too because it is so
outrageous and lets him stand out.
