Environmental Influences
BPA 406
We will start this paper with the admission of the facts of the 1999 WTO events.
We understand the fact that the leader of the police I Seattle as represented by
Chief of police norm Stamper is ineffective. CNN reported that the police denied
the allegations that they used force and some weapons to hurt the protestors and
that they only used pepper spray to calm the protestors (CNN, 1999). When
Stamper was asked to explain his decision, he didn’t have any explanation nor alibi
thus people doesn’t know how to judge him though most of them lost their respect
in him. The Seattle police defend their side by saying that the protestors started the
riot and they just did what they need to do. However investigation result shows that
there are instances where in the police started the attacks. The situation involving
the attacks mirrors how the leader could have managed to control the situation.
When the people in power overused their authority over the people, they lose
public trust. This was what exactly happened to during the WTO conference of
1999 and how it was badly manage by the people in power.
Environmental Influences
The leaders during the 1999 WTO conference were tested and were judged based
on the way they handled the situation in Seattle. This process of handing a
situation using other people is called leadership and its effectiveness will be based
on the way they dealt with the issue and how they resolve unexpected conflicts
along the way. The result of the WTO conference protest made headlines and it did
affect the law enforcers, the organizers of the event and their leaders. It seems that
both parties missed the fact that there will be other groups who will be joining the
conference like the protestors and the unique background of each groups. During
the conference, cultural difference such as values and beliefs were ignored by the
leaders. These cultural values that were ignored include values and beliefs. As
Rusaw stated, leaders has the capability to build a culture through actions and
words (Rusaw, 2001, p.108). When people of different background and culture
mixed up in the city of Seattle in November of 1999, the leader’s decision was a
clear mismanagement that cost the city their police officer.
World Trade Organization (WTO) Protests in Seattle
The World Trade Organization conducts annual conferences to ensure trade
issues all over the world are being addressed. In 1999, the conference was in
Seattle. Oldham stated that the conference was held to discuss important issues
that are affecting the world trading system and the environment (Oldham, 2009, p.
1). Aside from the WTO leaders around the world, there are also 10,000 protestors
in Seattle that time. Oldham explained the 10,000 protestors act as to why they
are there- the protestors are there to have fight to show that they disagree with
what the WTO is trying to do to the ordinary working people and the environment
(Oldham, 2009, p. 1). This number
