Pleasure reading means any reading
that is primarily for enjoyment. It
encompasses a wide range of genres
and publications and includes both
fiction and nonfiction.
•Fiction: Novels, short stories,
jokes, comics, poetry, lyrics, etc
•Nonfiction: reference books,
newsletters, emails, biography,
memoirs, magazines, websites
They can be read as an
instructional texts but can
also be read purely for
pleasure.
Why read for pleasure?
Reading for pleasure is critical for ensuring that the
practice needed to become fluent becomes part of
the learner's everyday life, and is not just seen as a
classroom based Activity. Pleasure reading can help
students to have general knowledge, to understand
other cultures, and to have an insight into human
nature and decision making.
•Aside from sheer joy of
exercising imagination,
research shows pleasure
reading improves literacy,
social skills, health and
learning outcomes.
Interacting with others over
books can develop social and
oral skills, leading to increase
social interaction and oral
language development
becoming source of pleasure
throughout life. They said that
it's also reading that may have
begun at someone else's
request, which we continue
because we're interested in it.
