Every single organization on the planet, even our own careers, always function on three levels. What we do, How we do it and Why we do it.
When all those pieces are aligned, it gives us a filter through which to make decisions. It provides a foundation for innovation. When all three pieces are in balance, others will say, with absolute clarity and certainty,
“We know who you are,” “We know what you stand for.”
Whether they realize it or not, all great and inspiring leaders and organizations think, act and communicate just like each other…and it’s the complete opposite from everyone else.
This PowerPoint is a collection of quotes from the book Start With Why. It describes the characteristics of great leadership, as well as, outlines why goliath companies like Apple, Walmart, and Microsoft succeed leaps and bounds above the rest.
Any person or organization can explain what they do; some can explain how they are different or better, but very few can clearly articulate why. WHY is not
about money or profit — those are results. WHY is the thing that inspires us and inspires those around us.
This book is about a naturally occurring pattern, a way of thinking, acting and communicating that gives some leaders the ability to inspire those around them.
Although these “natural-born leaders” may have come into the world with a predisposition to inspire, the ability is not reserved for them exclusively. We can all
learn this pattern. With a little discipline, any leader or organization can inspire others both inside and outside their organization to help advance their ideas and
their visions. We can all learn to lead.
Start With Why shows that the leaders who inspire all think, act and communicate in the exact same way — and it’s the complete opposite of what everyone
else does. Drawing on a wide range of real-life stories, it provides a framework upon which organizations can be built, movements can be led, and people can be
inspired — and it all starts with WHY.

In The Trust Edge, David Horsager reveals the foundation of genuine success- — trust. Based on research but made practical for today’s leader, The Trust Edge shows that trust is quantifiable and brings dramatic results to businesses and leaders.
In this book, Horsager teaches readers how to build the Eight Pillars of Trust.
When leaders learn how to implement these pillars, they enjoy better relationships,
reputations, retention, revenue and results. Fascinating and timely, The Trust
Edge unveils how trust has the ability to accelerate or destroy any business, organization or relationship. The lower the trust, the more time everything takes, the
more everything costs and the lower the loyalty of everyone involved. Conversely,
an environment of trust leads to greater innovation, morale and productivity. The
trusted leader is followed. From the trusted salesperson, people will buy. For the
trusted brand, people will pay more, come back and tell others. Trust, not money,
is the currency of business and life!

3. Chapter 6 - The Emergence of Trust
WHY is just a belief, HOWs are the actions we
take to realize that belief, and WHATs are the
results of those actions —— All three in
balance builds trust.
Culture is everyone working towards the same
goal - all win or no one wins
4. The Only Difference Between You and a
Caveman Is the Car You Drive
Different cultures aren’t good or bad, just different.
One place isn’t better or worse, just a better fit.
Culture is common beliefs and values.
Find people who have the same beliefs and values
5. Finding the people who believes
what you believe
When employees belong, they will guarantee your
success. And they won’t be working hard and
looking for innovative solution for you, they will be
doing it for themselves.
The goal is to hire those who are passionate
for your WHY, your purpose, cause or belief, and
who have the attitude that fits your culture. Once
that is established, only then should their skill set
and experience be evaluated.
6. Great companies do not hire skilled people
and motivate them; they hire already
motivated people and inspire them. People are
either motivated or they are not. Unless you
give motivated people something to believe in,
something bigger than their job to work toward
they will motivate themselves to find a new job
and you´ll be stuck with whosever left
7. Companies with a strong sense of WHY are
able to inspire their employees. Those
employees are more productive and
innovative, and the feeling they bring to work
attracts other people eager to work there as
well.
When people inside the company
know WHY they come to work, people outside
the company are vastly more likely to
understand WHY the company is special
11. Innovation happens at the
edges
Paying someone a lot of money and
asking them to come up with great ideas
ensures very little. However, pulling together a
team of likeminded people and giving them a
cause to pursue ensures a greater sense of
teamwork and camaraderie.
The role of a leader is not to come up
with all the great ideas. The role of a leader is
to create an environment in which great ideas
can happen
12. Companies with a clear sense of WHY tend to
ignore their competition, whereas those with a
fuzzy sense of WHY are obsessed with what others
are doing. People who come to work with a clear
sense of WHY are less prone to giving up after a
few failures because they understand the higher
cause.
Edison: “I didn’t find a way to make a light
bulb, I found a thousand ways
how not to make one
13. The Definition of Trust
The more trust the the more innovative someone would be
willing to be especially with a safety net to fall back on
Real Trust Comes from the Things You
Cannot See
Great leaders embody a sense of purpose that inspires
those around them.
Trust comes when the values and beliefs are actively
managed.
Passion comes from the feeling you are a part of something
that you believe in, something bigger than yourself.
14. The influence of
others
We are more likely to
trust those who share our values
and beliefs. When we believe
someone has our best interest in
mind because it is in their benefit
to do so, the whole group
benefits.
16. - 2.5% innovators
- 13.5% early adopters
- 34% early majority
- 34% late majority
- 16% laggards
Goal is to find the influencers (innovators
and early adopters) to help jump the chasm
to the early majority
17. Refusing to consider the law of
diffusion will cost you
People will not buy the WHAT, they will buy the WHY
TiVo example:
Attempted to appeal to the cynical majority by
explaining WHAT the product did instead of stating WHY the
company or the product existed in the first place. They
attempted to convince with features and benefits:
We’ve got a new product.
It pause live TV.
Skips commercial.
Rewinds live TV.
Memorizes your viewing habits and records shows on your
behalf without your needing to see it
18. Tivo attempted to convince consumers to buy by
telling them only WHAT the product did. Features
and rational benefits. The practical-minded,
technophobic mass markets response was
predictable. “ I don’t understand it. I don’t need
it. I don’t like it. You are scaring me”.
What TiVo should have done is talked
about what they believed. They should have
talked about WHY the product was invented in
the first place, and then ventured out to share
their invention with the innovators and early
adopters who believed what they believed
19. Like this:
If you’re the kind of person who likes to have total
control of every aspect of your life, boy do we have a
product for you.
It pause live TV.
It skips commercials.
Rewinds live TV.
Memorizing your viewing habits and records shows
on your behalf without you needing to see it.
In this version, all the features and rational
benefits serve as a tangible proof of WHY his product
exists in the first place.
20. When you start with WHY, those who believe
what you believe are drawn to you for very
personal reasons. It is those who share your
values and beliefs, not the quality of your
products that will cause the system to tip. Your
role in the process is to be crystal clear about
what purpose, cause or belief you exist to
champion, and to show how your products and
services help advance that cause
