3.  There is two main themes I have identified in my
chosen book are war and violence. I think those are the
main two themes as the book is about the D-Day
landings on the Normandy Beaches during World War
2. My final cover communicates these themes by the
use of my image from my photo shoot, colours and the
lighting. The photo I have taken is an image that was
taken during the D-Day Landings, which helps show
what the book is about. Also the colours and lighting
that I have used on my book cover work really well
together as they show that the image on the book cover
is a dark memory that is trying to be forgotten but can’t
be forgotten, that is shown by the dark areas
surrounding the image of the soldiers.

4.  When it comes to the typeface and letterform that I have
used in my book cover I decided to go with a bullet styled
typeface. The typeface is decorative as it is in the shape of
bullet holes, which gives the title of the book but also
decorates the book. The bullet hole style to the typeface
communicates the theme of war and violence as soldiers
were shot during the D-Day landings. The font is both serif
and san serif as they have flicks and no flicks on certain
letters, I also worked with the colours so that they fit the
dark book cover but at the same type so it doesn’t make it
extremely dull.

5.  When it comes to what I was influenced by, really I always
liked D-Day and decided that it would be a good book cover
to redesign. I was influenced to do it in this style with the
darkness surrounding the image, when I saw the image and
spoke to a D-Day veteran at the museum I went to. After he
told me that it was a real horrible experience I thought it
would be good to make the book cover look like it is an
horrible memory from the past that it is trying to be forgotten.
I think that the original book cover is effective as it contains
as really good photo the soldiers landing at the beaches of
Normandy at D-Day. Also the typefaces work really well as
they are simple but effective and the word “Overlord” is in a
fire colour which relates to the theme of war.

6.  My design process had several stages, which included a
photo shoot, deciding on filters and making several versions
of the boom cover. I produced several versions of the boom
cover using different techniques and styles for each book
cover I produced. I then compared the book covers and
decided on what I liked and didn’t like about them, which led
me to choosing my final book cover. To do my final book
cover I went to a museum to photograph any images and
objects that are related to D-Day which I could possibly use
in my book cover. I used one of the images and played
around with the filters, which gave me the effect of a dark
memory that is trying to be forgotten. The photographs and
filters I did can be found in my slides showing the process of
my design.

7.  I chose my final book cover as the final version because of
the style it ended up looking. I like the style it turned out to be
because it gives the impression that it is a dark memory that
is wanting to be forgotten by someone who experienced the
D-Day landings and the horror that went on during them. My
book not only answers the brief through the book cover
looking like a dark memory but also the use of the typeface
and style I used in the style of bullet holes as it also relates to
the theme of war. It explores the typeface and letter forms
because it has the bullet shape font which not many book
covers contain, book cover usually are made up of normal
fonts which aren’t very interesting.
