Nokia lost the smartphone battle because divergent shared
fears among the company’s middle and top managers.
Middle managers were afraid of top managers. Company’s top
managers had a terrifying reputation.
Top managers were afraid of the external environment and put
heavy pressure to the middle managers.
Temperamental leaders and frightened middle managers
( scared of telling the truth).
8. Who Killed Nokia? Nokia Did.
Culture of SILENCE
Fear, threat rigidity, and shared emotions.
Middle managers remained silent or provided optimistic,
filtered information.
Modest levels of fear can be healthy for motivation
but leaders should be aware of undesirable side-
effects.
9. Conclusion
Leadership skills cannot be overlooked and
underestimated.
A leaderless organization is like a group of army without
general.
Keep the office mood a fine balance
between productivity and playfulness.
