A Mastery Approach to Leadership
by Peter L. Rooks
 BE YOURSELF, only better! Everyday.
 LEADERSHIP and CHARACTER are inextricably linked. Leader habits are your VALUES translated
into ACTION. Leaders DO THE RIGHT THING especially when no one is watching.
 Leadership is the art of helping people achieve their maximum potential. Leaders are HUMBLE, and
DEVELOP and ELEVATE OTHERS.
 Leaders establish a clear DIRECTION and DESTINATION for the organization and then align,
motivate, and inspire a voluntary response to get there. Leaders SET THE EXAMPLE and engage others
in SHARED MEANING.
 PEOPLE and RELATIONSHIPS are how things get accomplished. TEAMWORK is fundamental to
success! This develops from individual relationships based on mutual expectations, assumptions, values,
and beliefs. Leaders are EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT and foster an environment that ENGENDERS
TRUST.
 Continuous CHANGE and IMPROVEMENT of all aspects of the organization is essential. Evolutionary
transformation leading to revolutionary outcomes. Ultimately, the only thing that counts is RESULTS.
Leaders have an ADAPTIVE MINDSET and relentlessly PURSUE EXCELLENCE.
 When faced with an adaptive challenge, if it is not illegal, immoral, or unethical, get over yourself and
ASK HOW CAN WE instead of why are we. Leaders SOLVE PROBLEMS and have a POSITIVE, can-
do ATTITUDE.
The true MARK OF A LEADER is when they leave an organization and it functions as well or better
without them as a result of their leadership.
