Bluetooth was named after the Danish king Harald Bluetooth and uses the Bluetooth symbol of his initials in runic writing. It was developed in the 1990s as a wireless alternative to cables between devices using short-range radio links in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Bluetooth allows devices to connect within 10 meters at data rates up to 2 Mbps. It offers robustness, low complexity, low power usage, and low cost. Bluetooth is expected to become a worldwide connectivity standard and enable new applications using global radio frequency connectivity.
