This workshop will consider how researchers can support one another to improve their academic writing. Writing groups have clear benefits – when run effectively, their model of peer mentoring can improve your confidence and motivation as a writer, helping you to develop your ideas and original research, and make more effective use of the time spent with your supervisor. They can be a great way of dealing with the pitfalls familiar to many researchers, including writer’s block and procrastination. As an intellectual community, a writing group can also open the way to future research collaborations. After sharing some of the common problems involved in writing research, this workshop will suggest strategies for overcoming them through peer mentoring, and offer practical advice on establishing and maintaining a writing group.
One of three slides sets from a workshop on Universal Design for Learning. Other slidesets focus on engaging accessible discussions and creating a syllabus to support learning.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Blue Ocean PPR/AL/PPR (PE-RT) outer layer
thermo-fusion multilayer composite pipes
Blue Ocean PPR/Al/PPR (PE-RT) pipe is made of 5 layers with outside layer produced of PPR and inside layer
produced of either PPR or PE-RT. Middle layer is made of overlap or but-welded aluminium layer. We recom-
mend using pipe with but-welded aluminium as it is more advanced technology than overlap-welded alumini-
um, allowing use of thicker aluminium with seamless-welding connection, resulting in improved qualities like
increased durability of pipe. Outside and inside polymer layers are connected to aluminium by high-molecular
adhesive layers. Aluminium layer guarantees low thermal expansion and 100% oxygen barrier.
High-strength connection of polymer layers with aluminium defines value of expansion, which is similar to
characteristics of solid-metal pipes. One of the main advantages of Blue Ocean PPR/Al/PPR (PE-RT) pipes is
its simple and clean thermo-fusion connection with standard PPR fittings: no special treatment and prepara-
tions needed, just cut and weld.
Main advantages in comparison with usual PPR pipes:
• 100% oxygen barrier
• Low thermal expansion α=0.03mm/mK
• Excellent long-term durability
• Simple installation (similar to usual PPR pipes)
• High impact strength

Blue Ocean STABI PPR/AL/PPR
composite pipes
Blue Ocean Stabi (PPR/Al/PPR) pipe is mechanically stabilized through integrated aluminum layer. It
is and extension range of Blue Ocean PPR piping systems with better workability and lower thermal
expansion. Pipe construction: homogenous PPR inner pipe (according to EN ISO 15874 (2004) and DIN
8077/8078) with sealed aluminum layer and outer PPR cover layer. The aluminum layer reduces the
linear expansion coefficient to <0.035 mm/mK and protects inside PPR pipe preserving its properties and
acting as an oxygen barrier: Blue Ocean Stabi pipes can be welded with Blue Ocean PPR fittings.
Main advantages in comparison with usual PPR pipes:
• Low thermal expansion α=0.03 mm/mK
• 100% oxygen barrier
• Increased supporting distance
• Better resistance to knocks
• High stability towards temperature and pressure
Application:
• Cold and hot water supply systems
• Potable water supply systems
• Heating systems
• Central air conditioning systems
