Chapter 1
What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is used to measure the force with which our heart is
pumping blood around our body to provide the oxygen & energy, which
our body needs. Blood pressure is also known as Hypertension
A blood pressure reading always consists of two numbers:
1.Top number (Systolic)
2. Bottom number (Diastolic)
www.hssmedicare.com
6
Chapter2
Types & Measurement Unit Of Blood
Pressure
TYPES OF BLOOD PRESSURE:
1. High Blood Pressure (Systolic Pressure)
2. Low blood pressure( Diastolic Pressure)
3. Normal blood pressure.
1. Systolic Pressure:-
It refers to the highest pressure your heart applies when it pumps blood
around your body.
2. Diastolic Pressure:-
It refers to as the lowest pressure your heart applies while pumping
blood around your body.
3. Normal Blood Pressure:-
For a normal blood pressure the top no. (Systolic number) should show a
reading lower than 120 and the bottom no. (Diastolic no.) Should show a
reading lower than 80 . Basically when both these numbers are within
these ranges then your blood pressure is considered to be a normal
blood pressure.
MEASUREMENT UNIT OF BLOOD PRESSURE:-
Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury
(mmHg)

Chapter 3
Understanding the Nature Of Blood
Pressure
Understanding the Nature Of Blood Pressure:-
1.The top numbers (systolic) ranges from 70-180
2.The bottom numbers (diastolic) ranges from 40-100
As per the chart what does the readings mean?
1.If the reading is 90/60 or Less - you may have Low Blood Pressure
2. If the reading is More than 90/60 and Less than 120/80- It is Normal
Blood Pressure. This is referred to as an Ideal and Healthy Reading.
3. If reading is More than 120/80 and Less than 140/90- Means your
blood pressure is Slightly High & you should try to bring it under control
4. If reading is 140/90 or More- Means you have High Blood
Pressure.Take the medicines prescribed by your doctor.
9
It Means:-
If reading is 140 or more:-
No matter is the bottom reading, you have high blood pressure.
If your bottom reading is 90 or above :-
No what is the top reading, you may have high blood pressure.
If your top number reading is 90 or less :-
No matter what is the bottom reading, you may have low blood pressure
If your bottom reading is 60 or less :-
No matter what is the top reading, you may have low blood pressure.

Chapter 4
What is Low Blood Pressure/
Hypotension
- A low blood pressure refers to a reading of 90/60 mmHg or lower.
- For any reading to be counted as a low blood pressure only any one of
the numbers has to be lower than it should be.
Means:-
- If the Top Number (Systolic Number) is either 90 or less than 90, doesn't
matter what the bottom number is, It may be considered as a Low Blood
Pressure
"OR"
- Of the Bottom Number (Diastolic Number) are either 60 or less than 60,
no matter what the top number is, it may be considered to be as the Low
Blood Pressure.

Chapter 5
What are the Types & Symptoms of
Low Blood Pressure?
Types Of Low Blood Pressure / Hypotension:-
1- Orthostatic Hypotension (Postural Hypotension).
2- Neurally Mediated Hypotension.
# What is Orthostatic Hypotension (Postural Hypotension)?
- The kind of blood pressure that occurs when someone is getting up
from a lying down position to a standing positions .9
- It is also called orthostatic hypotension
# What is Neurally Mediated Hypotension ?
- The type of low blood pressure that occurs when someone stands for a
long period of time is called Neurally Mediated Hypotension
# Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure:-
Some of the symptoms of low blood pressure include.
- Chest pain
- Nausea
- A feeling of light headache
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Blurred vision
If none of the above symptoms are there and the blood pressure it is
12
not a matter of considered & does not require any type of treatment.
But it can be a matter of concern, especially for old age people where
inadequate supply of blood to the heart, brain or other important parts
of the body.
The heart issues in case of low blood pressure usually occurs when the
blood pressure drops suddenly & there is inadequate supply of blood to
your brain.

Chapter 6
Causes of Low Blood Pressure
There is not always a specific or clear reason behind low pressure. It can
be due to any one of the following reasons.
- Liver disease
- Pregnancy
- Hormonal problems such as diabetes, low blood sugar
- Heat stroke
- Abnormal heart beats
- Heart failure
- Some prescribed medicines for High Blood Pressure, Depression.

Chapter 7
Causes Of Sudden Drop In The Blood
Pressure
Reaction to drinking of alcohol.
- It can by reaction of taking some prescribed medicinal
- High body temperature
- Loss of blood from bleeding
- Severe dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea or fever.
- A severe allergic reaction
- Sepsis, a severe blood infection.

Chapter 8
What Is High Blood Pressure/
Hypertension
The highest blood pressure/hypertension is the highest pressure your
body applies when it pumps blood around your body. It is a common
disease in which the blood flows through the arteries at a rate higher
than the normal pressure. High blood pressure can cause heart & kidney
disease.

Chapter 9
Symptoms Of High Blood Pressure

Types Of High Blood Pressure
There are mainly two types of high blood pressure-
1. Primary High Blood Pressure:-
It is the most common type of high blood pressure. We usually cannot
determine the exact cause of high blood pressure. (This type of high
blood pressure tends to develop itself as a person’s gets older)

It can be caused by the reaction of certain other medicines. This type
usually can be resolved after creating & removing the cause.

Chapter 12
Different Stages of High Blood
Pressure in adults
There are basically 3 different stages of high blood pressure
(hypertension) in adults:
1.Prehypertension:- The first stage hypertension is prehypertension. In
this stage, the top number (systolic) reading is between 120-139 mmHg
or the bottom number (Diastolic) reading is between 80-89.
2-High Blood Pressure Stage 1:- The top no. reading is between 140-159
or the bottom no. reading is between 90-99.
3-High Blood Pressure Stage 2:-The top no. reading is 160 or higher or
bottom no. reading is 100 or higher.
