The term "weblog" was coined in 1997 to describe logging the web, with the short form "blog" coined in 1999. Early blogs evolved from online diaries where people kept running accounts of their personal lives. Justin Hall is recognized as one of the earliest bloggers starting in 1994. Blog popularity rose in the late 1990s and early 2000s with platforms like LiveJournal, Pitas.com, and Blogger, and their role became more mainstream through political commentary in 2002. Today there are over 200 million public blogs across personal, social, political, and corporate genres on many platforms and devices, ranging from personal commentary to online advertising.
