Black vultures are a native raptor species in North America whose population is currently stable and growing. While not endangered, they are considered a pest species due to the property damage they can cause by roosting on roofs and perching in urban areas. Current management efforts in New Jersey focus on non-lethal deterrents like hanging effigies to scare vultures away from rooftops. A proposed management plan would decrease the population growth rate below stable levels by reducing survival of subadults and adults for 5 years, then pausing to allow the population to recover before closely monitoring it going forward.
