Rob Herring from Linaro presented on accomplishments and next steps for Android HAL consolidation. Some accomplishments included running Android M with Mesa and DRM on various hardware including freedreno and virtio-gpu. Next steps for DRM include improving plane selection and rotation handling in drm_hwcomposer as well as standardizing private data in gralloc. Next steps for other areas include getting video drivers ready for V4L2 and continuing to contribute code to upstream Mesa and DRM projects.

AArch64 and ARM GDB ports were added some years ago, but some useful features are still missing. We started to add these features to GDB in 2015 and most of them are already accepted by the GDB mainline.
This presentation will discuss these new added features, such as reverse debugging, tracepoint, and multi-arch debugging, together with some explanations on how does GDB support them in general.
This presentation will also introduce some basic GDB or debugger internal knowledges and also some GDB in-progress projects in which we plan to do and are interested in.

Ostech war story using mainline linux for an android tv bsp
Android TV is a relatively recent Google Initiative to use the Android Operating System for TV Set-top-boxes, reusing the Phone Operating System architecture.
In the last years, the Android Hardware Abstraction Libraries were adapted/rewritten to use the modern and recent Linux APIs like DRM/KMS, V4L2 for Video Decode, ... allowing Android to boot and work with mainline Linux.
During last year, Neil was involved into an upstream-first open Android TV BSP, aiming to fully support AOSP for TV running on a Low-Cost generally available ARM based System-on-Chip designed for TV application. Neil will overview the requirements and struggles in term of system support, upstreaming & Android tweaking to enable AOSP to boot on such device, including the whole trusted boot chain, to graphical Linux with multimedia features enabled.

MazuV-Debug-System
This document summarizes the MazuV-Debug-System project which implements RISC-V debug specification version 0.13 to enable debugging of a PicoRV32 CPU on a Lattice FPGA board. The debug system uses a Debug Module (DM) to handle debug commands from a Debug Test Module (DTM) over UART, allowing commands from GDB via OpenOCD to halt, step, and read/write registers of the CPU. While it can perform basic debugging tasks, hardware breakpoints and watchpoints are not yet supported.

Pkgsrc is a package collection system that allows software to be built and installed from source for multiple operating systems. It began as a ports-like system for NetBSD but has expanded to support over 20 platforms. Pkgsrc provides quarterly stable releases and allows packages to be built from source or binary formats. It uses a tier system to classify package stability and supports multiple compilers, fetch commands, and binary package formats.

You may think OpenDataPlane and DPDK are somewhat equivalent. But they are not. OpenDataPlane is about Software Defined Dataplanes while DPDK is a Software Dataplane. A Software Defined Dataplane can control a hardware only Dataplane in a way that packets can go from input port to output port without reaching a CPU core. With Software Dataplanes , all packets have to reach a CPU core. As a result, one vendor could leverage a Software Defined Dataplane to build a 100Tbps network box while it is not possible with a Software Dataplane.

KVM/ARM has grown up. While the initial implementation of virtualization support for ARM processors in Linux was a quality upstream software project, there were initial design decisions simply not suitable for a long-term maintained hypervisor code base. For example, the way KVM/ARM utilized the hardware support for virtualization, was by running a ‘switching’ layer of code in EL2, purely written in assembly. This was a reasonable design decision in the initial implementation, as the switching layer only had to do one thing: Switch between a VM and the host. But as we began to optimize the implementation, add support for ARMv8.1 and VHE, and added features such as debugging support, we had to move to a more integrated approach, writing the switching logic in C code as well. As another example, the support for virtual interrupts, famously known as the VGIC, was designed with a focus on optimizing MMIO operations. As it turns out, MMIO operations is a less important and infrequent operation on the GIC, and the design had some serious negative consequences for supporting other state transitions for virtual interrupts and had negative performance implications. Therefore, we completely redesigned the VGIC support, and implemented the whole thing from scratch as a team effort, with a very promising result, upstream since Linux v4.7. In this talk we will cover the evolution of this software project and give an overview of the state of the project as it is today.

Cloud firewall logging
Cloud Firewall (CFW) Logging also known as RFD 163 is a feature where we will start logging specific kinds of firewall records in a manner that doesn’t require as many per compute node resources.
This logging will allow us to pay attention to inbound packets that drop. We want to record new TCP connections or connectionless UDP sessions in a manner that fits in nicely and are “aggregatable” into a proper Triton deployment. To activate this, a user has to opt into logging by marking a firewall rule with the "log" attribute.

BKK16-213 Where's the Hardware?
Linaro has multiple labs and board farms with varying purposes. This session will start with an overview of each of these, their locations, their focus, etc. It will then provide examples and direction on how a Member can add their hardware to a board farm. It will also provide an overview of how a Member or employee can navigate/leverage/check out a board for experimentation and usage (this varies based upon which lab/board farm is being considered, so all will be reviewed) in each of the farm locations. Finally, the session will provide pointers to any respective documentation, user guides, etc. for each of the locations.
Kernel Recipes 2016 - Upstream Kernel Graphics is (Finally) Winning
About 5 years ago I was at a big conference on the topic of what’s needed for upstream graphics. I spent a lot of time apologizing for and ranting about the various horror shows in the DRM graphics subsystems. And eventually some engineer from a hardware vendor asked:
“If this all such crap, why should we bother with upstream graphics?“
Now I can finally and honestly answer this, because upstream supports everything, has helpers for all possible and impossible display standards, is supported by ever Linux-based OS out there and every vendor has a driver. In this talk I will present about how we got there, and especially what’s been going on recently.

Review design. The current approach to predict the idle time duration is based on statistics on the previous idle time durations. The presentation will show the weaknesses of this approach and how by tracking the irq behavior we predict the next event to guess estimate the idle duration.
BKK16-210 Migrating to the new dispatcher
1. The presentation discussed migrating LAVA tests to a new dispatcher design with an explicit pipeline structure.
2. It outlined what the new LAVA dispatcher is capable of, encouraged redesigning existing tests to work with the new framework, and detailed timelines for migration and removal of the old dispatcher.
3. Advice was given on working with the new dispatcher including being explicit about deployment, boot, and test details in job definitions.
ELC-NA 2020: War story - Using mainline linux for an Android TV bsp

Linaro has multiple labs and board farms with varying purposes. This session will start with an overview of each of these, their locations, their focus, etc. It will then provide examples and direction on how a Member can add their hardware to a board farm. It will also provide an overview of how a Member or employee can navigate/leverage/check out a board for experimentation and usage (this varies based upon which lab/board farm is being considered, so all will be reviewed) in each of the farm locations. Finally, the session will provide pointers to any respective documentation, user guides, etc. for each of the locations.

Kernel Recipes 2016 - Upstream Kernel Graphics is (Finally) Winning
About 5 years ago I was at a big conference on the topic of what’s needed for upstream graphics. I spent a lot of time apologizing for and ranting about the various horror shows in the DRM graphics subsystems. And eventually some engineer from a hardware vendor asked:
“If this all such crap, why should we bother with upstream graphics?“
Now I can finally and honestly answer this, because upstream supports everything, has helpers for all possible and impossible display standards, is supported by ever Linux-based OS out there and every vendor has a driver. In this talk I will present about how we got there, and especially what’s been going on recently.

BKK16-410 SoC Idling & CPU Cluster PM
The linux kernel has two distinct ways of managing idle. The CPUidle framework for CPUs and for all other devices: runtime PM combined with generic power domains (genpd). In addition, CPUidle is not scaling well for multi-cluster SMP systems and heterogeneous systems like big.LITTLE. To better manage idle for modern SoCs with a hierarchical structure, we are exploring extending runtime PM and genpd to CPUs so there is a unified framework for managing idle across all devices.
Kernel Recipes 2014 - The Linux graphics stack and Nouveau driver
The Linux graphics stack is constantly evolving to add support for new hardware. This evolution and new software specifications have forced the X graphical server to be split into several components including a now rotates in the Linux kernel, the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM). A quick presentation of these components and their role will be carried out before looking at new major change in the common code, the NVIDIA Optimus technology.
One equipped with Optimus technology laptop has two graphics processing units (GPUs), one from Intel and one from NVIDIA. This technology combines the low power Intel GPU when the machine is not used to the performance of NVIDIA GPUs when the user plays. This technology, however, is a nightmare to manage kernel-side although the final building blocks necessary for its complete management are being finalized. Further explanation of this issue will be made and we’ll see how this new software architecture has added graphics acceleration on embedded processor SoCs like Tegra.
The case of open source NVIDIA driver, called “New” will then be studied. This is the graphics driver community as it is developed without the help of NVIDIA and attracted several regular contributors, including myself! We’ll take a quick history of the project before talking about the current developments and issues related to the lack of documentation.
The end of this presentation will then be left to the participants so they can ask more general questions about the graphics stack, if they wish.

During the last few months of 2011 the Xen Community started an effort to port Xen to ARMv7 with virtualization extensions, using the Cortex A15 processor as reference platform.
The new Xen port is exploiting this set of hardware capabilities to run guest VMs in the most efficient way possible while keeping the ARM specific changes to the hypervisor and the Linux kernel to a minimum. Developing the new port we took the chance to remove legacy concepts like PV or HVM guests and only support a single kind of guests that is comparable to "PVH" in the Xen X86 world.
Linux 3.7 was the first kernel release to run on Xen on ARM as Dom0 and DomU. Xen 4.3, out in July 2013, is the first hypervisor release to support ARMv7 with virtualization extensions and ARMv8.
This talk will explain why ARM virtualization is set to be increasingly relevant for the automotive industry in the coming years. We will go on to describe how Xen exploits the strengths of the hardware to meet the requirements of the industry. We will illustrate the early design choices and we will evaluate whether they were proven successful or a failure.Bsdtw17: lightning talks/wip sessions
This summary covers two lightning talks from BSDTW17:
1) The first talk proposed allowing multiple encrypted GEOM providers to attach using the same passphrase, improving on having to enter the passphrase multiple times. A new rc.conf syntax was suggested.
2) The second talk discussed ongoing work to improve MP-safe networking in NetBSD, including improvements to layers 2-3, drivers, and other components like pfill and npf. Remaining work and questions were also outlined.
State of ARM-based HPC
In this deck, Paul Isaacs from Linaro presents: State of ARM-based HPC. This talk provides an overview of applications and infrastructure services successfully ported to Aarch64 and benefiting from scale.
"With its debut on the TOP500, the 125,000-core Astra supercomputer at New Mexico’s Sandia Labs uses Cavium ThunderX2 chips to mark Arm’s entry into the petascale world. In Japan, the Fujitsu A64FX Arm-based CPU in the pending Fugaku supercomputer has been optimized to achieve high-level, real-world application performance, anticipating up to one hundred times the application execution performance of the K computer. K was the first computer to top 10 petaflops in 2011."

High Performance Scaling Techniques in Golang Using Go Assembly
This document provides an overview of Minio object storage and the work being done to accelerate hashing algorithms using Golang assembly. It introduces Minio as an S3 compatible object storage server written in Golang. It then discusses ongoing efforts to accelerate BLAKE2b and SHA256 hashing through Golang assembly implementations optimized for different CPU architectures like AVX2, AVX, and SSE. Examples of Golang and Plan9 assembly code are provided.
Improving Scalability of Xen: The 3,000 Domains Experiment
Machines are getting powerful these days and more and more VMs will run on a single machine. This work started off with a simple goal - to run 3,000 domains on a single host and address any scalability issues come across. I will start with Xen internal then state the problems and solutions. Several improvements are made, from hypervisor, Linux kernel to user space components like console backend and xenstore backend. The main improvement for hypervisor and Dom0 Linux kernel is the new event channel infrastructure, which enable Dom0 to handle much more events simultaneously - the original implementation only allows 1024 and 4096 respectively.
The targeting audiences are cloud developers, kernel developers and those who are interested in Xen scalability and internals. They need to have general knowledge of Linux, knowledge of Xen is not required but nice to have.
SoC Idling for unconf COSCUP 2016
1) The patches add support for managing CPU idle states using the generic PM domain framework and runtime PM. This provides a unified approach for idle management across all devices.
2) Key aspects include extending PM domains to support multiple idle levels, initializing CPU PM domains from device tree, and adding a governor to determine idle states based on wakeup times and QoS.
3) The changes allow the Linux kernel to directly control CPU and cluster idle states when firmware supports the OS-initiated suspend mode in the PSCI standard.

Wt vs phalcon
Wt and Phalcon are PHP frameworks, with Wt being built entirely in C++ for improved performance and lower resource usage compared to Phalcon which relies on PHP. Performance tests showed Wt had higher request throughput and lower memory usage than Phalcon. Wt also has advantages in security, as its logic is automatically verified, while Phalcon requires manual filtering. Overall Wt provides better performance, security and is more lightweight and environmentally friendly than Phalcon due to its C++ implementation.
ELC-E Linux Awareness
This document discusses improving debugging of the Linux kernel using the open source debugger GDB. It begins with an overview of existing ways to debug the kernel using GDB, including via KGDB, Qemu, and JTAG probes like OpenOCD. With the grown interest in virtualization from big players around the world there are more and more companies choose ARM SoCs as their target platform for running server environments. It is also known that majority of such SoCs come with broad coprocessors available on the die, e.g. GPU, DSP, security etc. But at the moment the only way to speed up guests with these is either using a para-virtualized approach or making that HW dedicated to a specific guest.
Shared coprocessor framework for Xen aims to allow all guest OSes to benefit from this companion HW with ease while running unmodified software and/or firmware on guest side. You don’t need to worry about setting up IO ranges, interrupts, scheduling etc.: it is all covered, making support of new shared HW way faster.

Abstract
The dramatically growing amount of data captured by sensors and the ever more stringent requirements for latency and real time constraints are paving the way for edge computing, and this implies that not only big data analytics but also Machine Learning (ML) inference shall be executed at the edge. The multiple options for neural network acceleration in recent Arm-based platforms provides an unprecedented opportunity for new intelligent devices with ML inference. It also raises the risk of fragmentation and duplication of efforts when multiple frameworks shall support multiple accelerators.
Andrea Gallo, Linaro VP of Segment Groups, will summarise the existing NN frameworks, model description formats, accelerator solutions, low cost development boards and will describe the efforts underway to identify the best technologies to improve the consolidation and enable the competitive innovative advantage from all vendors.
Audience
The session will be useful for executives to engineers. Executives will gain a deeper understanding of the issues and opportunities. Engineers at NN acceleration IP design houses will take away ideas for how to collaborate in the open source community on their area of expertise, how to evaluate the performance and accelerate multiple NN frameworks without modifying them for each new IP, whether it be targeting edge computing gateways, smart devices or simple microcontrollers.
Benefits to the Ecosystem
The AI deep learning neural network ecosystem is starting just now and it has similar implications with open source as GPU and video accelerators had in the early days with user space drivers, binary blobs, proprietary APIs and all possible ways to protect their IPs. The session will outline a proposal for a collaborative ecosystem effort to create a common framework to manage multiple NN accelerators while at the same time avoiding to modify deep learning frameworks with multiple forks.

In rolling releases, this gets even worse, as nothing ever stands still. The only sane answer to that problem are working Continuous Integration tests. The SUSE way to check whether any change breaks normal distribution behavior is OpenQA. Using OpenQA we can automatically run tests that hard working QA people did manually in the old days. That way we have fast enough turnaround times to find and reject breaking changes This session shows how OpenQA works, what pitfalls we had to make ARM work with OpenQA and what we’re doing to improve it for ARM specific use cases.”

platform to benchmark HPC applications, Linaro is developing an automated deployment strategy, using Ansible, Mr-Provisioner and Jenkins, to install the
OS, OpenHPC and prepare the environment on varied architectures (Arm, x86). This work is meant to replace the existing ageing Bash-based recipes upstream while still keeping the documents intact. Our aim is to make it easier to vary hardware configuration, allow for different provisioning techniques and mix internal infrastructure logic to different labs, while still using the same recipes. Before joining ORNL, Pavel spent ten years at Mellanox Technologies, where he led Mellanox HPC team and was one of the key driver in enablement Mellanox HPC software stack, including OFA software stack, OpenMPI, MVAPICH, OpenSHMEM, and other.
Pavel is a recipient of prestigious R&D100 award for his contribution in development of the CORE-Direct collective offload technology and he published in excess of 20 research papers.

Applications, programming languages, and libraries that leverage sophisticated network hardware capabilities have a natural advantage when used in today¹s and tomorrow's high-performance and data center computer environments. Modern RDMA based network interconnects provides incredibly rich functionality (RDMA, Atomics, OS-bypass, etc.) that enable low-latency and high-bandwidth communication services. The functionality is supported by a variety of interconnect technologies such as InfiniBand, RoCE, iWARP, Intel OPA, Cray¹s Aries/Gemini, and others. Over the last decade, the HPC community has developed variety user/kernel level protocols and libraries that enable a variety of high-performance applications over RDMA interconnects including MPI, SHMEM, UPC, etc. With the emerging availability HPC solutions based on ARM CPU architecture it is important to understand how ARM integrates with the RDMA hardware and HPC network software stack. In this talk, we will overview ARM architecture and system software stack, including MPI runtimes, OpenSHMEM, and OpenUCX.

Gilad Shainer Bio:
Gilad Shainer has served as Mellanox's vice president of marketing since March 2013. Previously, Mr. Shainer was Mellanox's vice president of marketing development from March 2012 to March 2013. Mr. Shainer joined Mellanox in 2001 as a design engineer and later served in senior marketing management roles between July 2005 and February 2012. Mr. Shainer holds several patents in the field of high-speed networking and contributed to the PCI-SIG PCI-X and PCIe specifications. Gilad Shainer holds a MSc degree (2001, Cum Laude) and a BSc degree (1998, Cum Laude) in Electrical Engineering from the Technion Institute of Technology in Israel.
Scot Schultz Bio:
Scot Schultz is a HPC technology specialist with broad knowledge in operating systems, high speed interconnects and processor technologies. Joining the Mellanox team in 2013, Schultz is 30-year veteran of the computing industry. Prior to joining Mellanox, he spent the past 17 years at AMD in various engineering and leadership roles in the area of high performance computing. Scot has also been instrumental with the growth and development of various industry organizations including the Open Fabrics Alliance, and continues to serve as a founding board-member of the OpenPOWER Foundation and Director of Educational Outreach and founding member of the HPC-AI Advisory Council.

software called SCore, which was used in several large PC cluster
systems around 2004. From 2002 to 2014, he was a professor at the
University Tokyo. He led a project to design a commodity-based
supercomputer called T2K open supercomputer. As a result, three
universities, Tsukuba, Tokyo, and Kyoto, obtained each supercomputer
based on the specification in 2008. He was also involved with the
design of the Oakleaf-PACS, the successor of T2K supercomputer in both
Tsukuba and Tokyo, whose peak performance is 25PF."

Talk Title: Vanguard Astra - Petascale Arm Platform for U.S. DOE/ASC Supercomputing
Talk Desc: The Vanguard program looks to expand the potential technology choices for leadership-class High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, not only for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) but for the Department of Energy (DOE) and wider HPC community. Specifically, there is a need to expand the supercomputing ecosystem by investing and developing emerging, yet-to-be-proven technologies and address both hardware and software challenges together, as well as to prove-out the viability of such novel platforms for production HPC workloads.
The first deployment of the Vanguard program will be Astra, a prototype Petascale Arm supercomputer to be sited at Sandia National Laboratories during 2018. This talk will focus on the arthictecural details of Astra and the significant investments being made towards the maturing the Arm software ecosystem. Furthermore, we will share initial performance results based on our pre-general availability testbed system and outline several planned research activities for the machine.
Bio: Andrew Younge is a R&D Computer Scientist at Sandia National Laboratories with the Scalable System Software group. His research interests include Cloud Computing, Virtualization, Distributed Systems, and energy efficient computing. Andrew has a Ph.D in Computer Science from Indiana University, where he was the Persistent Systems fellow and a member of the FutureGrid project, an NSF-funded experimental cyberinfrastructure test-bed. Over the years, Andrew has held visiting positions at the MITRE Corporation, the University of Southern California / Information Sciences Institute, and the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Bachelors and Masters of Science from the Computer Science Department at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2008 and 2010, respectively.

ARM's Scalable Vector Extensions is an innovative solution to processing highly data parallel workloads. While several out-of-tree attempts at implementing SVE support for QEMU existed, we took a fundamentally different approach to solving key challenges and therefore pursued a from-scratch QEMU SVE implementation in Linaro. Our strategic choice was driven by several factors. First as an ""upstream first"" organisation we were focused on a solution that would be readily accepted by the upstream project. This entailed doing our development in the open on the project mailing lists where early feedback and community consensus can be reached.

Devicetree has become the dominant hardware configuration language used when building embedded systems. Projects using Devicetree now include Linux, U-Boot, Android, FreeBSD, and Zephyr. However, it is notoriously difficult to write correct Devicetree data files. The dtc tools perform limited tests for valid data, and there there is not yet a way to add validity test for specific hardware descriptions. Neither is there a good way to document requirements for specific bindings. Work is underway to solve these problems. This session will present a proposal for adding Devicetree schema files to the Devicetree toolchain that can be used to both validate data and produce usable documentation.

In October 2017, Arm announced the vision of Platform Security Architecture (PSA) - a common framework to allow everyone in the IoT ecosystem to move forward with stronger, scalable security and greater confidence. There are three key stages to the Platform Security Architecture: Analysis, Architecture and Implementation which are described at https://developer.arm.com/products/architecture/platform-security-architecture.
_Trusted Firmware M, i.e. TF-M, is the Arm project to provide an open source reference implementation firmware that will conform to the PSA specification for M-Class devices. Early access to TF-M was released in December 2017 and it is being made public during Linaro Connect. The implementation should be considered a prototype until the PSA specifications reach release state and the code aligns._

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
