BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol that allows users to download large files quickly by downloading different pieces of the file simultaneously from multiple users. Unlike traditional downloading methods where the file is downloaded from a single server, BitTorrent breaks the file into pieces that can be downloaded from many users who already have the file, maximizing download speeds. It works by having a central tracker coordinate communication between users downloading and sharing pieces of the file, called a swarm. To use BitTorrent, a user downloads a small torrent file that contains metadata about the file pieces, then the BitTorrent client connects to the tracker and swarm to begin downloading and sharing pieces simultaneously from many peers until the full file is acquired.
