Birthday Cake 101

- 2. Learning Objective • My objective is to teach novice cookers a simple way to make a Pillsbury Funfetti cake.
- 3. Ingredients • 1 cup of water • 1/3 cup of oil • 3 whole eggs • 1 pack of Funfetti Cake Mix • ½ can of Funfetti Frosting (includes sprinkles)
- 4. Step 1: Preparing • Set oven to 350˚ F • Coat bottom and sides of desired pan with no- stick cooking spray or shortening • Dust the pan with flour
- 5. Step 2: Mixing • Empty contents of the box (cake mix) into a mixing bowl • Add water, oil, and eggs to the bowl • Whisk by hand or beat with a mixer at low speed for 2 minutes
- 6. Step 3: Baking • Empty contents of bowl into desired pan • Set timer according to pan size – 13x9-inch = 32-36 minutes – Two 8-inch round = 32-36 minutes – Two 9-inch round = 27-31 minutes – Bundt pan = 37-41 minutes • When toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, your cake is done
- 7. Step 4: Presentation • Allow cake 10-15 to cool off • Once cake is cooled off, use a butter knife and desired amount of frosting to coat the outside • Lightly coat top of the cake with sprinkles • Use candles at your own discretion

- My targeted learning group was actually two of my roommates. We decided to make a cake for our fourth roommate as a surprise and I learned that my other roommates had no idea how to do so. Therefore, I took the initiative to make the cake and by doing so, I was able to teach my other two roommate how to do so. I would bring a box of Funfetti cake mix, a mixing bowl, and an example pan to help my learners visualize what I’m talking about.
- As stated before, this presentation is targeted towards young adults who have minimum or no baking experience and would like to learn how to prepare a basic birthday cake.
- These are the ingredients for a Pillsbury Funfetti Cake, my personal favorite and the one that we decided to make for our roommates surprise. Besides the Funfetti Cake Mix and frosting, the ingredients could be most likely be found around any kitchen. Crisco oil is recommend but not required, as well as the sprinkles.
- The first thing you should do after gathering your ingredients, is set the oven to 350˚ Fahrenheit and allow it to pre-heat. Once the oven has started heating, select the pan you would like to use and coat the bottom and sides with a non-sticking cooking spray or shortening. This will prevent the cake from sticking to pan you cut it and take it out to serve. Next, you should lightly dust the pan with flour, this helps the cake from getting wet since it is now coated.
- Now you’re ready start using the ingredients that were set out earlier. First you, you’ll need a mixing bowl to blend your ingredients. I always empty the cake mix into the bowl first because from my experience, it helps to prevent the mix from lumping. Afterwards, you need to add your water, oil, and crack your eggs into the bowl, in no particular order. Once you have everything in the mixing bowl, begin to whisk or quickly stir the ingredients. If you have a mixer, you may use that at a low speed for about two minutes.
- Once, your ingredients have been blended and contain no lumps, you may pour the contents into the pan you have chosen. Hopefully the oven is done preheating and you can set the time according to the pan that you have decided to use. I use the 2 8-inch round pans so my cake will take about 35 minutes to get done. After your time is up, you should stick a toothpick or a knife in the center of the your cake to be certain it’s done.
- Once your cake is done cooking, you should set it away from heat for 10-15 minutes and allow to cook off. Cooling off the cake will make it easier to frost the cake. After your cake is cooled and frosted, you can add sprinkles and candles at your own discretion, just depends on how fancy and creative you want it to be.
