Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by periods of mania and depression. During manic episodes, an individual may feel overly happy or irritable and display increased energy, rapid speech, and risky behavior. Depressive episodes involve persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, changes in appetite or sleep, feelings of worthlessness, and suicidal thoughts. Teachers should be aware of a student's medication schedule and side effects, communicate with parents, and provide academic accommodations as outlined in the student's IEP. Having students complete a research project on bipolar disorder can also help increase understanding of the condition.
