(geneticmodificationtechniques)

(R
isk assessment)

iohazardousWaste
• Definition:
• Waste generated from biologically-cultured stocks
and plates, molecular material, blood, animal and
plant tissues etc.
• All sharps e.g. glass implements, needles, syringes,
blades, glass Pasteur pipettes
• Separate biological waste from chemical
hazardous waste
• Treat to eliminate biohazard by sterilization or
incineration
• Label correct, use biohazard tape

34. WasteC
ollection
• Dry Solids (No sharps!)
• Primary Containment:
Collect dry, solid waste in a “red
bag”. The red bag must have the
international biohazard symbol, the
word “biohazard” and a label
• Secondary Containment:
The red bag (primary containment)
must be stored in a rigid container
with a lid that is resistant to leaks
and punctures. The red bag must
be kept in the secondary container
during use, storage, and transport.

35. Waste Collection
35
• Sharps
• Collect in a rigid puncture and leak
resistant properly labeled container.
• The words “Biohazardous waste”
• Must have International Biological Hazard
symbol
• Biohazardous Liquid Waste
(Temporary Storage)
• Collect in a non-breakable container with
lid and labeled with the international
biohazard symbol and the word
“Biohazard”.
• The container needs to be in secondary
containment.
• Treat the liquid by disinfecting it with a
10% bleach solution.
• Let the solution stand for 20 minutes.

39. Alcohols
• usually ethanol, methanol or isopropanol
• are wiped over skin and allowed to
evaporate for quick disinfection
• non-corrosive
• have wide microbiocidal activity
• is not effective against fungal or bacterial
spores
• have limited activity
• due to evaporation, results in brief contact
times
• are more effective combined with purified
water
• 70% ethanol is effective against a wide
spectrum
• 80% ethanol + 5% isopropanol are required to
effectively inactivate lipid-enveloped viruses

• Phenolic
• is probably the oldest known disinfectant
• are active ingredients in some household
disinfectants
• It is rather corrosive to the skin and sometimes toxic
to sensitive people
• Used in the virus inactivation/extraction of viral RNA
• Guanidinium thiocyanate-phenol-chloroform
extraction
• Other inactivation agent as: Guanidinium
thiocyanate (GITC)
• is a chemical compound used as a general protein
denaturant
• most commonly used in the extraction of DNA and
RNA

43. Infection C
ontrol:
• Includes all of the practices used to prevent the
spread of microorganisms that could cause
disease in a person.
• Infection control practices help to protect
clients and healthcare providers from disease by
reducing and/or eliminating sources of
infection.
• An example of infection control practices are:
• Handwashing
• Gloves, gowns, protective eyewear, masks (properly
fitted)
• Aseptic technique
• Private rooms, also negative pressure rooms

1. Perform hand hygiene:
Before and after patient contact
After removing gloves or any other PPE item
After touching blood, body fluids, secretions,
excretions, and contaminated items, whether
or not gloves are worn
After contact with patient surroundings
2. Routine hand hygiene by alcohol hand rub
(preferably) or by washing hands with soap and
water
3. Perform hand hygiene after touching surgical
mask/ N 95 respirator or before touching the face
