Sam Suharto was born in 1940 in Kediri, Java, Indonesia. He had a difficult childhood during World War II and Indonesia's war for independence against the Dutch. Suharto graduated high school in 1955 and college in 1961 with a degree in statistics. He went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. in statistics from Texas A&M University. Suharto worked for the Central Bureau of Statistics in Indonesia and then for the United Nations for 19 years, retiring in 2000. Since retirement, he has consulted for several governments and organizations and remains active in statistics organizations.
