Stephen King was born in 1947 in Portland, Maine and raised primarily by his mother. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1970 with a degree in English and married Tabitha Spruce the following year. While struggling to find work as a teacher, King supported himself with short story writing and began work on his first novel, Carrie. The success of Carrie allowed King to leave teaching and become a full-time writer, living in Maine where he still resides today with his family and continuing to produce bestselling novels and stories.

John Dewey’s “Educational Progressivism”
Objectives:
Who was John Dewey?
What does Educational Progressivism means?
What is the purpose of education?
John Dewey
(0ctober 20, 1859 – June 1, 1952)
American philosopher, psychologist and educational reformer
Founder of philosophical school of Pragmatism
Father of Functional Psychology
Educational Progressivism
Educational Progressivism
The main principle of educational progressivism is that humans are social animals who learn best in real-time activities.
Instructors should focus on providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to survive and to succeed in our competitive society.
Strong emphasis on problem-based learning to develop problem solving and analysis skills (For example, instructor posing questions the exercise students’ minds in a practical manner)
The purpose of education is to enhance individual effectiveness in society and give learners’ practical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Based on John Dewey's model of learning instructors should:
Become aware of the goal,
Define the objectives,
Propose hypotheses to achieve the goal,
Evaluate the consequences of the hypotheses from one's past experience, and
Test the most likely solution

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
2. Stephen King
Stephen Edwin King was born in Portland,
Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and
Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King.
After his parents separated when Stephen was
a toddler, he and his older brother, David,
were raised by his mother.
Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort
Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was
at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut.
3. Stephen King
When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her
children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her
parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become
incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was
persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical
care of the elderly couple.
Other family members provided a small house in
Durham and financial support. After Stephen's
grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in
the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential
facility for the mentally challenged.
4. Stephen King
Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham
and then Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in
1966. From his sophomore year at the University of
Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the
school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS.
He was also active in student politics, serving as a
member of the Student Senate. He came to support
the anti-war movement on the Orono campus,
arriving at his stance from a conservative view that
the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional.
5. Stephen King
He graduated from the University of Maine
at Orono in 1970, with a B.A. in English and
qualified to teach on the high school level.
A draft board examination immediately
post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds
of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat
feet, and punctured eardrums.
6. Stephen King
He and Tabitha Spruce married in January of
1971. He met Tabitha in the stacks of the
Fogler Library at the University of Maine at
Orono, where they both worked as students.
As Stephen was unable to find placement as a
teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his
earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry,
and her student loan and savings, with an
occasional boost from a short story sale to
men's magazines.
7. Stephen King
Stephen made his first professional short
story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling
Mystery Stories in 1967.
Throughout the early years of his marriage,
he continued to sell stories to men's
magazines. Many of these were later
gathered into the Night Shift collection or
appeared in other anthologies.
8. Stephen King
In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching
high school English classes at Hampden
Academy, the public high school in
Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings
and on the weekends, he continued to
produce short stories and to work on
novels.
9. Stephen King
In the spring of 1973, Doubleday & Co.
accepted the novel Carrie for publication.
On Mother's Day of that year, Stephen
learned from his new editor at Doubleday,
Bill Thompson, that a major paperback sale
would provide him with the means to leave
teaching and write full-time.
10. Stephen King
At the end of the summer of 1973, the Kings moved
their growing family to southern Maine because of
Stephen's mother's failing health.
Renting a summer home on Sebago Lake in North
Windham for the winter, Stephen wrote his next-published
novel, originally titled Second Coming
and then Jerusalem's Lot, before it became 'Salem's
Lot, in a small room in the garage.
During this period, Stephen's mother died of
cancer, at the age of 59.
11. Stephen King
Carrie was published in the spring of 1974. That
same fall, the Kings left Maine for Boulder,
Colorado. They lived there for a little less than a
year, during which Stephen wrote The Shining, set
in Colorado.
Returning to Maine in the summer of 1975, the
Kings purchased a home in the Lakes Region of
western Maine. At that house, Stephen finished
writing The Stand, much of which also is set in
Boulder. The Dead Zone was also written in
Bridgton.
12. Stephen King
In 1977, the Kings spent three months of a projected
year- long stay in England, cut the sojourn short and
returned home in mid-December, purchasing a new
home in Center Lovell, Maine.
After living there one summer, the Kings moved north
to Orrington, near Bangor, so that Stephen could teach
creative writing at the University of Maine at Orono.
The Kings returned to Center Lovell in the spring of
1979.
In 1980, the Kings purchased a second home in Bangor,
retaining the Center Lovell house as a summer home.
13. Stephen King
Stephen and Tabitha now spend winters in
Florida and the remainder of the year at
their Bangor and Center Lovell homes.
The Kings have three children: Naomi
Rachel, Joe Hill and Owen Phillip, and four
grandchildren.
14. Stephen King
Stephen is of Scots-Irish ancestry, stands 6'4"
and weighs about 200 pounds. He is blue-eyed,
fair-skinned, and has thick, black hair,
with a frost of white most noticeable in his
beard, which he sometimes wears between
the end of the World Series and the opening
of baseball spring training in Florida.
Occasionally he wears a moustache in other
seasons. He has worn glasses since he was a
child.
15. Stephen King
He has put some of his college dramatic society
experience to use doing cameos in several of the
film adaptations of his works as well as a bit part in
a George Romero picture, Knightriders.
Joe Hill King also appeared in Creepshow, which
was released in 1982. Stephen made his directorial
debut, as well as writing the screenplay, for the
movie Maximum Overdrive (an adaptation of his
short story "Trucks") in 1985.
16. Stephen King
Stephen and Tabitha provide scholarships
for local high school students and
contribute to many other local and national
charities.
Stephen is the 2003 recipient of The
