This document discusses the concept of paternalism in healthcare. It defines paternalism as acting in a fatherly way towards someone else. Paternalism in healthcare can take several forms: it can be pure when intervening solely for the patient's welfare, or impure when also considering others' welfare. It can be restricted when overriding a patient's action due to their own defects, or extended when restraining risky actions. Paternalism can also be positive by promoting good or negative by preventing harm. It can be soft if using the patient's own values to justify intervention, or hard if not using their values. Finally, paternalism can be direct if overriding the patient's values for their own benefit, or indirect if restraining

6. From the Latin pater „father‟ or paternus
‘fatherly’ paternalism means the act of
being fatherly to someone.
This is in keeping with Mencius’s sense of
human-heartedness.

7. With regard to the recipient’s welfare, paternalism
may be either pure or impure.
Pure paternalism justifies intervention into a person’s
life for the sole welfare of that person.
Impure paternalism justifies interference with another
person not only for that person’s welfare but also
for the welfare of another.

8. With regard to the recipient’s defect and safety,
paternalism may be either restricted or intended.
Restricted paternalism supports interventions which
overrides an individual’s action because of some
defect or weakness in that individual.
Extended paternalism is one in which an individual is
restrained from doing something because it is
too risky or dangerous.

9. With regard to the promotion of good and prevention
of harm, paternalism may be either be
positive or negative.

10. With regard to the recipient’s sense of value,
paternalism may be either soft or hard.
In a soft paternalistic act, the patient’s values are
used to justify the intervention with his possible
action or decision.
In hard paternalism, the patient’s values are not the
ones used to justify a paternalistic act.

11. With regard to the recipient’s benefit, paternalism may be
either direct or indirect.
In a direct paternalistic act, the individual who
should received the supposed benefit is the
one whose values are overridden or
disregarded for his own good.
In indirect paternalism, a particular individual
will be benefited if one person is restrained
from doing something.
