Classification
• The process of putting anything into groups.
• It can be done with anything.
• It makes it easier so study things and look for similar
characteristics.
• Most of the time we classify things based on their
physical features.
• We can classify things on different levels.

Biodiversity: Classification of living organisms

Editor's Notes

  1. Engage: Use this slide to engage your learners in the lesson. 1. How would you classify what you see?
  2. We can classify the fruit in many different ways: We can classify it by: Colour Shape Taste Type of fruit Smell Texture Seed Size Etc.
  3. These are some of the possibilities.
  4. Define classification: What is classification?
  5. Movement
  6. Respiration
  7. Sensitivity to environment
  8. Growth
  9. Reproduction
  10. Excretion
  11. Nutrition
  12. Listen carefully. Pause when necessary. Ask learners questions. Use EdPuzzle or set questions for the learners to retain their attention.
  13. This is a possible Acronym.
  14. Listen carefully. Pause when necessary. Play again and allow the learners to sing with to help them remember the classification system.
  15. Let us look at the classification system at work. We will apply it to us as Human Beings.
  16. What does each of these classifiers mean?
  17. What are the three main groups that we classify all living organisms on Earth in?
  18. Archaea and Bacteria forms a Kingdom each. This year we will focus on mostly Plants and Animals in their different habitats that forms part of the biodiversity on Earth.
  19. How do we name organisms?
  20. This system was developed by Carl Linnaeus. He was from Sweden and was a naturalist. He started naming plants and then went on to name animals as well. As Science and Technology develop, so does the naming system develop. Science is not static, but an on-going journey of discovery. Binomial: Bi – two; nomial – name Nomenclature: Nomen – name; clature – system We use Greek and Latin to name the organisms in this system and all the Scientists across the world uses this system. This is great because it eliminates confusion. No matter what language we speak and where we live, the biological name or taxonomy of a living organism stays the same.
  21. Use the following slides of biodiverse living organisms to play a game with the learners. Using the animals physical appearance, how will this organism: Feed Move Reproduce Excrete Sense its environment Grow Respire Describe the habitat it will need to be able to live. Choose the domain this organism lives in: Lithosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere Biosphere
