- People who BioAbroad has assisted. We need to add some information about these people or skip tis slide.. Examples: Meet Yonatan, Moti and Gil. Dorit is a neurologist who spent 7 years doing research at Stanford. She and her husband wanted to move back to Holon to be near her aging mother and 2 brothers. But she didn’t want to give up her work. With the help of BioAbroad and its innovative, up-to-date job database, Dorit was able to find an opening at Beilinson Medical Center and continue her work close to her family. Uzi is a biochemical engineer. He worked for 4 years in a start-up in New York. He attended a professional seminar run by BioAbroad, where he met a representative of Israeli R&D who shared his professional interests, and who became his business partner two years later in a new start-up venture in Haifa. These are some of the people who have been assisted by BioAbroad, a unique nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting and reaching Israeli scientists and physicians living overseas.
- Israeli ingenuity created the USB, EpiLady, solar windows and a space camera. Given the size of its population, Israel’s list of scientific and medical innovations goes far beyond what one might expect—with well-known inventions also including Babysense (prevents crib death), Mobileye (helps drivers navigate safely) and Netafirm (operates drip irrigation systems)—to name just a few. Alongside its many accomplishments, however, Israel’s scientific community faces a challenge: The smallness of the country leads to a brain drain, as many of Israel’s brightest scientists and doctors feel compelled to pursue opportunities overseas. Israel suffers from a shortage of physicians, and scientists who should be contributing to the “Start-up Nation” are instead leaving their mark in the United States.
- Israel’s rate of academic brain drain is one of the highest in the world – 10 times the rate of Europe. Top-tier Israeli academics and professionals are being drawn to positions abroad, mostly in the United States. The number of scientists leaving Israel increases by 6 percent annually. 3.5% of companies established in the U.S. between 2006-2012 by entrepreneurs who are not Americans, were established by Israeli entrepreneurs.
- BioAbroad was founded to address this challenge. BioAbroad strengthens research and industry in Israel by maintaining contact with talented Israeli scientists, physicians and entrepreneurs living around the globe. The organization encourages individuals to move back to Israel and use their knowledge, experience and skills to further Israeli academia and entrepreneurship. With its growing professional-social network, BioAbroad successfully links scientists living overseas with the Israel’s local scientific community.
- BioAbroad strengthens Israeli identity, helps Israeli scientists meet each other and opens doors in Israel for Israeli scientists living overseas with: Professional seminars that bolster connections among scientists Get-togethers that bolster Israeli identity for scientists living overseas Meetings and webinars with representatives of Israeli industry and academia
- By maintaining contact and strengthening the Israeli identity and connection with scientists and physicians overseas, BioAbroad makes an impact. Working together with scientists who are located in the US: It facilitates bi-national scientific collaborations between Israel and the US that maintain a major part of the R&D activity in Israel (coordinated by the Israelis and Jewish American scientists abroad) BioAbroad is also fighting on the front lines in the public relations battle taking place on American university campuses. It empowers Israeli scientists at leading university centers to promote a more positive image of Israel and change the language of delegitimization prevalent on today’s campuses. BioAbroad’s members highlight Israel’s scientific and technological achievement and focus on its contributions to the scientific community and to humanity as a whole.

- Today, BioAbroad is the largest network of senior Israeli researchers abroad with nearly 2,000 members in 22 countries, and 18 centers throughout North America that are run by Israeli scientists on a volunteer basis. As BioAbroad’s brand-new Director, I am excited to be part of the organization’s mission and I am exploring ways to increase its reach and impact.
